I think my players learned to fear the phrase "Cryovain sharply inhales." Since I accidentally overleveled the party by a lot, I made Cryovain an adult rather than a young dragon, which meant his breath weapon was 12d8. First use of the breath weapon almost instantly downed the paladin, and put the bard and sorcerer in single-digits. Had the wizard been caught in Cryovain's breath either time it got used, better-than-even odds of a TPK.
I also had to clarify to my players "No, I do not actually want to TPK you. I _want_ you to win; but as a DM, I have to give you a challenge."
_Dragon of Icespire Peak_ was the first full adventure that I ran. I had previously run a one-shot where 20th level characters fought the Horsemen of the Apocalypse, but that was just an extended combat. This composition fit the scene very well, and I think added a lot to the emotional highs and lows of the fight. Would have fit better if we'd taken a few less minutes than we did, but it worked nonetheless.
