I think you left out the most important part: you have to pick up the pieces WITHOUT touching/moving the other stones!! If you do touch/move, you lose your turn.
HI Steve. Lately my favourite game is the awele, which is a traditional boardgame related to a lot of ancient cultures. I can carry it around in my backpack and play it casually with people. It's a good way for having a chat while drinking a coffee or a beer. They are also called manqala. If I'm not mistaken there should be a traditional manqala from Korea, too. Have you ever had the chance to play with one?
Thanks a lot^^ I'm planning to teach "How to play Gonggi" to my native English teacher and to my Korean students in English and then we're going to have a battle ~~The winner or team will have the losers' gonggi pieces~~Thanks to you, I got the tips of the script of Korean traditional gonggi. I like your simple way~Actually I know many types and rules of gonggi...but I know when I show a foreign friend how to play, I think the simple way is the best~I'm already looking forward to being the best player who is... I'm also good at it!
My students always call this game "air". I gave my nieces a set of these when I visited back home. I will send this video to my sister to help remind them how to play. :)
In past this was such a widespread and common game. When we saw it my husband (British) immediately reacted knucklebones and I (Czech) drábky. But I haven't seen it played for very long time. BTW, I used to be rubbish in it.
i am 28 yrs aged from kerala(India)...i had played this game in primary school... my all friends played it well...its our traditional game...i think its may be a meditteranian game ..very ancient game..
Nice idea for videos. There is similar game my mother used to play during her youth in France. My Favorited child-hood game use to be playing marbles at school.
my african friend taught me this when i was younger and i would always beg her to play it. Though she herself didn't know too many of the rules, we enjoyed making up rules in the middle. we used to play with stones. I can't believe i found the actual rules finally!!
I'm sure there are variations around the world. Next week, I'll be introducing Korea's most popular game... it originated in China and is played by over 74 million people world wide.
"Air" sounds in korean "gonggi" same with game "gonggi". but game "gonggi" does not mean just "air" but "stone in the air" if "gonggi"'s name was composed with chinese letters. If game gonggi's name is just pure korean words, game gonggi's name means air in korean
Very good video. I had seen it in time to catch the pieces the last round with hand face up instead of face down hand, is that it depends on where you play or both forms are valid?
I used to play this game a lot when I was young. I really loved this game and was pretty good at it. There is an advanced skill called 따닥(dda dak). You can use this skill in round 2,3, and 4. I wish I could show the skill. If you do this skill, you get moe score. Anyway, enjoy the game. I think this game is good for stimulating your brain. ^^;
As i search about that, "game gonggi" is not composed with chinese letters, so, does not mean "air" and "stone in the air" (both guesses are words composed with chinese letters) But is just a pure korean word. And cannot know what is means. LOL most pure korean words are hard, as you know. Though i'm korean.
jackstones are not popular at my country. do you have an idea what other things i can use exept original 'stones'? i really wanna play this game but i dont know what should i use.
Xd I always watch Shinhwa play this! Junjin loves it and always have those stones with him! I understood the basics but never played... I need a set of those stones...
I think you left out the most important part: you have to pick up the pieces WITHOUT touching/moving the other stones!! If you do touch/move, you lose your turn.
I used to love playing this game when I lived in Korea!
One of my favorite Korean games... Korean Jacks!
My mom can do this game better.
Guam is where I learned the game. Playing it now with my kids.
oh the memories in middle school.

That's called "Payana" in Argentina. A very popular Oldtimer XD
When I was little I used to played this game a lot. Instead of using plastic beads, I sewed two pieces of fabrics together with sand filled inside.
I used to play marbles as well. Loved playing that and Four Square!
In past this was such a widespread and common game. When we saw it my husband (British) immediately reacted knucklebones and I (Czech) drábky. But I haven't seen it played for very long time. BTW, I used to be rubbish in it.

Air? I've never heard it called that! I'll have to look into that!
Nice!
I still love playing Crazy Eights the variant I like is a lot like Uno.
"gong-gi" also means "air" although this "gong-gi" means "alley"(stone)
As i search about that, "game gonggi" is not composed with chinese letters, so, does not mean "air" and "stone in the air" (both guesses are words composed with chinese letters)

Really? How good are you? Please post a video reply showing your awesome skills!

Great video! wow, it sure brings back memories.
Never played that game, but it reminds me of the dice in Dungeons and Dragons :)
Xd I always watch Shinhwa play this! Junjin loves it and always have those stones with him! I understood the basics but never played... I need a set of those stones...
The way you caught the stones in the 5th level is different.. I'm not sure but I don't think it's the right way of catching it in gonggi...
ahh... i miss playing this in elementary school... i was good at it
Sort of, YT published it way early a while back,
You are not supposed to touch other stones while picking them up. I sucked at it when I was a kid...
Yeah, were you a mage or a knight?
It's called "beş taş oyunu". The five stone game.
Sorry about the 10 delay for the answer Steve :((
Lots of different ways to play this game... and in every single one... I SUCK! :D
Are you good?
Wow, you're actually pretty good.
That is a fun game.
I agree.
And now?
Squid Games brought me here.
Really? What's it called?
:D Glad it brought back some good memories!
If it is May 2nd 2021, I play this game in the future instead in the 1990s because I was not born on 2012 and in the 1990s.
