IRAN: Rockets fired at Israel! USA tough! "An attack on nuclear facilities is now being discussed!"
According to US President Joe Biden, talks with Israel about a possible response are underway following the Iranian missile attack on Israel. What a response to the attack might look like is "being actively discussed at the moment. That remains to be seen," Biden told reporters at the White House in Washington on Tuesday. Biden explained that his team had been in contact with Benjamin Netanyahu's staff during the attack and that he would speak to the Israeli head of government himself.
"I will talk to him, and my message will depend on what we ultimately determine is necessary," Biden said.
Biden described the Iranian attack as a failure and once again assured Israel of the US's full support. "The attack appears to have been thwarted and ineffective, and that is a testament to the military capabilities of Israel and the US military," Biden said. "The United States stands fully behind Israel," he stressed.
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken called the Iranian attack "unacceptable" and demanded that the whole world condemn the attack.
US Vice President and Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris expressed her support for Israel. She emphasized her "unwavering" commitment to Israel's security. "I will always ensure that Israel has the ability to defend itself against Iran and Iranian-backed terrorist militias," she added, referring to Iran's allies such as the Shiite Hezbollah militia in Lebanon.
Iran fired around 180 rockets at Israel on Tuesday evening - more than twice as many as in the last direct attack in April. According to the Israeli army, "a large number" of Iranian rockets were intercepted. Biden ordered his country's army to come to Israel's aid and shoot down Iranian rockets. Later in the evening, Israel's army gave the all-clear for the time being, saying that the threat from Iran had been averted "for the moment".
