Electricity...check. Antenna...check. Must be somewhere in the middle.

And of course your favourite one, off the air because the generator has finished drinking all the oil, and has gone off on low oil level, or the solar charge controller got stuck trying to manage loads, and turned them all off, waiting for you to drive up there and "turn it off really, and turn it on". Or the problem might be easy to see, because, despite having 3 different Internet suppliers, and 3 different fibre cables, they all 3 meet at one cabinet 3 streets over, and some drunk guy just put a truck though the cabinet, cleaning it off neatly just under pavement height, and moving it 30m down the street.

What? Having three different providers have a common box never happens! 😜

@@TheBroadcastEngineer Turns out all 3are resellers of the fourth, who you absolutely despise from previous experience with the finest call centre talking bobbleheads they could find for $1 per hour, and the ability to read the script without understanding anything on it.

@SeanBZA hahaha that’s even funnier! Sorry to laugh at that, but the reseller market makes it difficult to actually source different connections.

@@TheBroadcastEngineer Well by me there are 4 running outside. First one is one cellular company, who recently sold off the actual infrastructure to a newly formed company, and is pretty reliable. Second is a residential fibre provider, okish. Third is what was the state telecoms company, and my reply to them is that they still owe me money, which shuts them up fast. Last one stopped 500m up the road, they got banned by the metro from doing any more work, because they were able to break every single underground service where they went, up to 132kV buried cables in trenches and covers, and where they dug all metal vanished.

Seen all of these in my 35 years as a broadcast engineer here in the uk. Presenters leaving without setting the desk correctly despite a check list being a common issue!

By far the most common no matter where in the world, it seems.

@@TheBroadcastEngineer By me the standard is loosing signal for 2 or 2.5 hour periods, because your STL is going via fibre, and the one node along the way that is critical is beingh rotationally load shed, and the batteries were stolen 3 months ago. Have not seen a single residential fibre hub that still has intact battery doors, all of them have been ripped open and the batteries stolen. The mobile plant in the building they actually replaced the battery packs, with lithium iron phosphate units, and those literally got encased with a reinforced polymer concrete fill, to prevent them being stolen, plus bolted to the floor with anchor bolts.

Static? I cringe because it's an antithetical term. And what FM tuner doesn't have squelch? Even my old clock radio that was made around the time when Neil and Buzz walked on the moon muted itself when there was no carrier. If I got a page that we were off the air, I tried to always have a way of checking it myself before I called in. At one station there was no backup power for the PBX. So if I called in and nobody answered, that was a good sign that the power was out.

Many car radios do not squelch. I have a couple of “portable” radios that don’t have squelch.

@@TheBroadcastEngineer you know, I didn't even consider car radios! Honestly it's been ages since I used one. Between picket fencing and heavy rotation, I was happy to let that go from my life. I was in TV, and had a police scanner that could pick up broadcast TV channels, I used that when a TV set wasn't handy.
