      Ha! Thank you!! Back when I was working at a makeup FX shop we’d stop work and clean the shop for a half hour every day. It’s a good policy that stuck with me 😁

    Until I started watching your videos I always thought that glaze was something that was put on after firing in the kiln. It's so interesting to see how it's really done. Thanks for sharing and congratulations on video 50!

    Loved this episode. The shaper is looking like it could be a lot of fun in your shop. Hoping a few extra mugs go on sale at the end of your run as I forgot to set an alarm and missed them. As always looking great. Keep up the good work.

      Mahalo! The shaper is a lot of fun - I keep struggling to squeeze time in to learn it! As to extra mugs, We held a (very small) handful back in case of breakage.

    All your videos are absolutely mesmerizing! Outside of being an amazing artist, walking through the process in such detail gives me a deeper appreciation for what tiki mug artists do from concept to production. Honestly if you were to release a mug that look like a ball of clay with a hole on the top, I'd probably buy it. Lol. (love the finished haircut at the end of the video as well!)

      Thank you for this! My main goal for the videos was to show how much work goes into producing slipcast mugs. And... if you’re looking for a ball of clay with a hole in it, here it is! instagram.com/p/BuG9WZqhxGg/?igshid=1vvnke550j2g4

      @@vantikistudio omg one does exists! I'm a little late to the tiki game, but hope I'll be able to get my hands on one of your mugs some day. Have the bastard mugs all been spoken for in a presale already, or will they be releasing soon?

    • @vantikistudio
      @vantikistudio  3 роки тому

      I’m afraid the standard edition bastard mugs are all sold. Later this year I’ll be doing 25 super limited versions, so there is still hope! 😄

    Which spray gun and compressor are you using? I want to get one when I built my studio😍
    Thank you!

    • @vantikistudio
      @vantikistudio  3 роки тому +1

      Thank you! The booth I use is a Laguna Clay spray booth (it is great), I have a big California Air Tools compressor, and I use a HVLP spray gun from C.A. Technologies. Not gonna lie, the gun I use is fancy and expensive. I use it a ton, and love it to death, but I know it is $$. I have ceramic friends who get great results from guns they get at Harbor Freight. I used a Harbor freight gun for years, but was happy to upgrade to my current setup.

    I wanted to know what happened to the little glaze testers, but I didn’t even need to raise my hand here in the back of the class. Thanks for making believe I'm smart enough to follow along.
    New question, how many different mug editions to you plan for a year? Cheers.

    • @vantikistudio
      @vantikistudio  3 роки тому

      Good question!! We usually do 4 or 5 mugs a year - that’s about all the two of us (and our small studio) can handle 😄

    What temperatures you use for the castings and glazes on your kiln. I like your ORIGIN, can you give more informations about the machine, is it a laser cut?

    Awesome videos! It's always so exciting to see the transformation in color from before to after a glaze firing. How many coats of glaze do you typically spray on to your pieces?

    • @vantikistudio

      Thank you for watching! I do 3 coats - but sometimes just two or one if I’m looking for a specific effect

    What kind of spray gun are you using? I thought it was a siphon-feed, but I didn't notice a tube going into the container.

    • @vantikistudio
      @vantikistudio  3 роки тому

      It’s a pressure feed gun made specifically for glaze. Can’t recall the manufacturer off the top of my head. It was quite expensive, but worth every penny!

    You didn’t have to cover the mouth opening when spraying the outside glaze?

    New here. Why do you call these mugs?

    • @vantikistudio
      @vantikistudio  3 роки тому

      Because you drink from them! 😄 - they are made for tropical cocktails (but you can put any beverage in them). Google “tiki mugs” to see the inspiration

  • @thepochade5992
    @thepochade5992 3 роки тому

    Are you calling these 'mugs' as in face or cup? Isn't it a wall hanging?

    • @vantikistudio
      @vantikistudio  3 роки тому +1

      Good question! The pieces I make are a continuation of the tradition of sculpted elaborate slipcast vessels for tropical cocktails. These vessels traditionally have been labeled “tiki mugs”, even though they may not resemble a standard pottery mug shape 😄.
