The real rogue heroes of WW2: the LRDG
In 1942 Signaller David Evans from Watford volunteered for the Long Range Desert Group (LRDG) which was a raiding and reconnaissance unit that was operating behind enemy lines in the Western Desert.
In this clip from his interview, he describes his first meeting with the LRDG in Cairo: "And all this mob started showing up, beards, reading the paper, smoking, half-dressed and God knows what"; brief details on the LRDG: "Never give the officer a map"; and living conditions in the desert: on soya sausages "If the Germans had got hold of those, we'd have been finished in about a week".
Some classic British humour here, despite the dangers involved (or maybe because of it?). It took a special type of man to serve with the LRDG. These were the real rogue heroes of WW2.
