I rarely comment on videos, this time though I just have to...THANK YOU so much for this great video. I had exact same problem and am capable of doing the work. Got this completed today on ramps and bingo all fixed and wicked smooth steering once again! THANK YOU for the great instructions and description.
Just performed this on my 2014 Audi Q5 - Video is spot on. One change I made ... I did not remove the joint. I sprayed the penetrating oil while a friend turned the wheel back and forth. Then I cleaned up the oil and added grease. Smooth turning now. If you have access to a lift this is an option.
So you just went under your vehicle and did it without the use of a lift? Asking because I don’t have access to a lift and was wondering if it can be done without.
I have an Audi a6 2012, the steering wheel movement is good, but when turning right or left, it makes a rubbing sound or something like that, what is the reason
I replaced my battery because it was 6 years old and acid was coming out from the battery in different places of the battery I heard when the battery is low or faulty it can affect the electric steering but my problem was still there. After watching your video I got under my car but the u joint looked great but after removing and tried to move it by hand I felt how stiff it was. I did the same from your video and feel brand new omg thank you so much for this video 🙏🙏🙏
I just replaced the battery on my S4 because I believed it was causing my steering to be stiff too and it didn’t fix it so I’m gonna try this next, atleast now I don’t feel so bad 😂
@@Elnenezx12r02 I saw my ujoint a few weeks ago and was wondering if that could be it but it didn’t look bad I’m hoping it is though that’s alot cheaper then a new power steering pump lol
G. Cimino I have had this issue for a few months and was told by the dealer the CV joints needed to be replaced $2500. I watched and just sprayed with grease on the u-joint. test drive feels like new. will have bearing grease applied tomorrow. thanks brother.
Great video. The bolt that worked for me was at Home depot. the Capri brand triple square socket 3/8 50mm. Cost $2.97. Spent about 5-6 mins back and forth with the penetrating oil before greasing it up. Works like a charm now! Thanks for posting.
Anyone knows if this works for the Audi A4 B9 (2016-2019) cars? Because I have the same problem and the Audi car mechanic says that I have to pay 3000 dollars to change the "steering rack" and that seems alot.
Does this have an electric pump? I have an a5 with 19" rotors and the wheel feel so heavy to turn when car is stationary. Feels like its grinding a bit.
@@robinkaler1091 No, still going to try run some seaform trans stuff through it. Not sure if it's just normal as I had a specialist fix something else on the car and he didn't think it was too heavy considering it is a basic hydraulic system w/ big wheels...?
Thank you for this clear and to the point video! My 2013 A4 had the same problem but not always and not as bad as this one. Mine wasn't as rusted as in this video.... I sprayed it down with WD40, loosened the bold and took the U-joint off. After a few times going back and forth it already loosened up. I cleaned the joint with breake cleaner and prayed it again with some WD40 before covering it with grease. It worked! Hope it stays like that :-)
@@EDGEMOTORS I hope the grease will prevent this!. We'll see, it's an easy job so It I feel a notch again, I'll redo it. This is a bad design though, Audi should have put a rubber boot over the joint or something...
On my 2010 Q5 after replacing front lower rear wishbones the steering becomes difficult only when getting close to the right full lock position. It sometimes sorts itself out, but now the issue re-appeared and garage is not able to find the cause, any ideas please?
When you said "dont move the shaft", is that the shaft in the steering rack? I saw the video you were you were moving the steering wheel side when you try to free the u joint
What would be the appropriate power steering fluid for a 2013 Audi A4 Quattro 6-speed manual. For the life of me I can’t find a definitive answer. I think CHF202. But also seeing CHF11S.
Ok i have a simular problem...when i try to brake and make a quick turn my steering wheel locks up would this be the culprit???? Someone please help!!!!!

I had the exact issue. 2014 Audi A5. All I did was turn the wheel and sprayed WD40 at the U Joint and it turns flawlessly. Didn’t even have to lift the car up!
I have similar issue and I been turning the steering wheel all the way to the right, then go from the front and spray some lubricants or wd4. That would work for a month then back to same issue again. I was wondering if you can extend the life by retrofiting a boot after you losen the bottom bracket? would that work? why or why not? willing to hear what others have tried?
You have to grease it really good. And make sure it is covered in grease. FYI wd40 is water based... so at first it lubes, but then might promote oxidation. And you have to do what was done in the video... turning steering wheel right and left will not do the trick.
If this fixes the problem why would you still need a rack unless you have bad rack..and if thats the problem then this will not fix it...theses are to different problems!!! Find a mechanic that's just not a parts swapper!!!
It is the u-bolt. Getting it serviced now. My extended warrantee doesn’t cover replacing the drive shaft, lol. $90 CAD to service plus an hour labor. Thanks for the vid guys.
Yes some times it will start to seize up and then if you turn it back and forth several times will become better, and when the weather changes it may go away completely...
My 2017 Audi Q3 steering is locked completely. It doesn't turn at all. I was driving the car just fine and parked it with the engine running. One minute later I returned to the car and I could not turn the steering at all. It's a serious fight to get it to turn. Also, the steering wheel light is on.

if you dont put it back at the same angle, I suspect the steering angle sensor will throw a fault code. Other than that should be fine.
