The Polymoog 203A is such an inspiring instrument. I think it's a very mysterious synthesizer. This video is a personal 'sonic exploration'. I tried to capture how I would use it's sounds to create music.
Chapters
1. Beat 1 0:00
2. Strings 1 2:17
3. Sample And Hold 3:56
4. Beat 2 5:26
5. Strings 2 7:10
Notes:
Everything has been recorded using an Audient ASP880 pre-amp / Audient ID22 Audio interface.
Chapter 1 and 4 has an EHX Frequency Shifter enabled in it's signal chain for slow movement. Drums are (samples) from a Korg Minipops. In post the sound has been processed using Waves SSL Compressors and Valhalla Vintage Verb.
In almost all chapters I only have the VCF (voltage controlled filter) with it's own envelope generator enabled in the Polymoog's master gain controls. I did this because this way I can sculpt it's sound more to my liking. It's envelope generator is however monophonic, so there is 're-triggering' happening each time you play something polyphonic. You hear this 're-triggering' best in chapter 1. You could see this as a limitation, but I think it forces you to play more creatively.
Thanks all for your nice comments and support, it is truly appreciated..!

Those skipping tactics are a really cool feature of youtube ;-)
Strings 1 is amazing!
Beat 2 5:26 is so funky. But I have to agree the strings are my favorite. Especially on Strings 2 7:10 reminds me of your song: you were bigger than life 💖💖💖
Vous êtes trop fort, vous avez toutes les capacités pour faire du Daft Punk comme dans leur album Discovery, il ne vous manque rien ! Foncez 😲
Merci beaucoup pour votre talent 🙏
strings 2 is what makes me wanna get 8 of these synths
70s Synths were something else man, they always talk about the 80s synths, but 70s have also that special thing that the 80s things synths have
A great example of how cool paraphonic synths can be. Triggering the chords in your right hand with the bass notes in your left.
Love The Sound Of This Bring's Me Back To 1979
2:48 that’s so lovely string sound
7:10 made me glad to be alive. beautiful tone.
agreed!
100% ... ethereal
Fantastic! Thanks for uploading this.
thanks a lot Alex, I love your work ! 💖
@@shookmusic I've come back to this video three times now. Love the funky jam, particularly when you drop three 11th chords to round it out at about 7 minutes. I want to spread that on toast.
It's incredible how much could be done with an instrument, hands and brain at a time when a brain was still needed.
A few bars in different styles inspired me much more than hundreds of modern artificial "beats", thank you and best regards
First tune is beautiful
This synth is all over Saga's first 5 albums, especially the first 3!
Came to hear a synth , discovered an artist and a performance .....no need to say more , each second was a pure pleasure ....
@Shookmusic , i used a screen shot of you playing this bad boy on my review (on the software made by Xils ) ua-cam.com/video/ntUstybo1_o/v-deo.html , i hope it's not a problem ;)
Don't know how you do it, but everytime you touch a keyboard pure gold comes out of it
And I love it.
The sequence at the begining has such a beautifull harmony. And the strings after that- audio Nirvana!❤
That's amazing. 5:26 is your old funky style! It's amazing how many different styles of music you master without it sounding ordinary, you still hear it's you. ❤🎶💕 NOW PLEASE TOUR AGAIN!!
I just found this randomly trying to find out what the Polymoog is like, and this is just lovely. The atmosphere you put with the scenery is a really nice touch, and the slightly dim lighting in the room and with just showing the keyboard as you played it, all has a calm, mellow atmosphere just like the music you played. I just was looking for a demo but this was a very cool experience, thank you sir!
awesome to read, thanks alot !
My prefered synth ever, played beautifully, thanks for these pieces of music...
My favourite analog synth also... and I heard so many stupid things about it.
The groove at 5:34! Moving around sound! ;-)
Section 3 "Sample and Hold" has that wonderful sound, heard on Prince's I wanna be your lover (for a few seconds in the middle of the song) and throughout one of my favourite Rush songs The Camera Eye
You can also hear it on prince’s first album 4 u😉
The sample and hold sounds on "The Camera Eye" didn't come from a Polymoog, but from an Oberheim OBX.
@@inversion66 Thanks the correction
vintage screen filter makes it even better..sounds much more retro..😎💯
The beginning sounds like a really sweet dreampop melody. Love the funky groove at 5:26. Great playing sir🫡
Beat 2 is really funky and got me wishing it was longer!
Shook I don’t know who you are I’ve just discovered this video but FUCK I HAD MULTIPLE EARGASMS.............you cannot imagine how much I’m deeply connected to what I’ve heard the vibe passed through me I had goosebumps and tears of happiness and trust me it’s VERY RARE with me.......
The sound of this synth, what you did with it........I feel it so much...
Big thank you 🙏
I’ve subscribed and go discover your channel.
Salut from France 🙋♂️
Vinz.
I close my eyes and dance the night away to this.
6:18 👌👌👌 so groovy !!!
I read that this was the synthesizer on which Roger Hodgson composed and played “Fools Overture”
Also loving the strings at 2:22
Bravo for even keeping a Polymoog functional and playable. Plus your music is great!
See? A single shared envelope for a VCF has its advantages! Watch his right hand in the first song..... he plays a chord and holds it, and what his left hand is playing is what's triggering the VCF. Instant rhythm....
I noticed this too. You can achieve this playing style with the Matriarch too if I am correct when you use the 'retrigger' option, anybody knows about this? (I dont own a matriarch)
@@shookstylez yes! I was just doing this!
😮😮😮😮
Thank you for the wonderful demonstration of the Polymoog!
I wonder if Moog Music would consider building a new Divide-down synthesizer...
Man this funky part was nice
Wow so funky groove at 6.00. Thanks, keep it up. Thanks
I hadn't seen this synth before, but I really like the esthetics of it. In my book, that's a really important aspect. I would have a hard time being inspired using an ugly synth.
true
The whole video, skills, melodies, sound, even colorization are a blast... I could go to sleep with the first beat and wake up to the second one every single day. Excellent content.-
thank you 😁❤
Didnt know you man! These polymoog tones are amazinggg. Specially the string ones. Really from another world. Cheers from Buenos Aires!
Incredible tone
i think this is my favourite 'synth-demo' video on youtube +3+ not only synth itself sounds beautiful but the lil improvised tunes & chord progressions are very inspiring!
this synth has such a sound... I've not really heard it in anything else. It feels like a paradox, both phat & thin at the same time. Great for all the staccato funk stuff you play.
Always liked this keyboard but I went with the Prophet T8.
I didn't know that it had drums though 😎
took me almost a week to find your channel again, ill sub now lmao
Stunning, beautiful!
In the wrong hands, the Polymoog can sound like a spooky home organ. You, on the other hand, are a true master! You have inspired me to use some of your tricks on my next track. Very well done indeed!
Awesome demo ! Thanks for sharing your fabulous Polymoog experience to us!
Sounds a little bit like the Starsky and Hutch theme. Probably played on the same instrument. Love it.
Beautiful, exciting and inspiring stuff!
Le son il tuuuue !!! Killllllaaaa sound !!
Absolutely superb! Love the chords and bass.
Such a wonderful machine and this really shows it off. Excellent stuff :)
What mighty fine presentation!
truly beautiful, thank's for sharing your chordes and your synth
This is synth heaven!
This made my day, thank you!
Awesome patched you've made, for me this would be a dream synth...
Your demo should be released on vinyl.
Incredible work
Eternal melody! I love this music! Thank you!
i know they have the moog one now but man, if they did a reissue of this thing, it would be insane.
OMG this sounds gorgeous and my brain made boom
Wow, fantastic playing!
Beautiful sounds! I got to try my first ever divide-down synth with controls recently (An Elektronika EM-25) and I hadn't thought to use the filter to retrigger notes with my bass hand till I saw your demo! Fun as mine is, I'd love to play a Polymoog, what an amazing instrument! Great work
I got a Polymoog 203A for free back in 1993 - when I worked at a 2nd hand shop. Dismantled it entirely and put back together and repaired about 85%. Sold it some 15 years later in 2008 for cash so I could visit my then-girlfriend (now wife). Do I miss it? Not really, but it was ok and had very Kraftwerk type sounds which I really liked.
Beautiful!
Sooooooo good- never thought it could sound like this.
Really really really great! Wow!
Instant vibes!!!
This is better than the memory moog, thanks for the upload
Beautiful
Thanks, love it.
Its my "madeleine de Proust"
all the power for the futur.
jean.
You're amazing.
Nice funk chops!
Great stuff.
I have the same one.. it can be difficult to tame the high 'buzziness' from it but the phasor seems like just the thing to try
Wow!😻
Gorgeous
i love your music:D
Nothing sounds like a PolyMoog
I love
Fantastic
im 10 seconds in and i already KNOW where my next 6K is going
what a fucking beast of a machine
loved the reference 1 ( beat ) soft :)
At the 8 minute mark: Anthony Phillips' patch from PRIVATE PARTS & PIECES
A true demo!
Tasty sound
Beat 2. 5:26. 💕💕💕💕💕 the FUNK is alive, I am a witness!!!💕☔️😎
First chapter 🔥🔥🔥
Before I even saw the uploader I thought "....this sounds like Shook"
this is so dope, how can i learn to play like this...
Deeply funk!!! Listen 4 u, Prince!!!💕😔😎
Supercool...yeahhh ❤
It sounds fantastic! You master it. Any way to simulate a stereo image without external effects? Otherwise it has a mono output right? Many thanks, keep it up.
Great playing of a great synth!!! What a machine!!! I want!! Is it a large machine? Heavy? Can I ask for dimensions? Bravo!!
Mentioning a rare yet popular keyboard is getting you some views and brings attention to your music.
Great ;-)
I think CherryAudio just released this as a soft synth on sale now.
This must be a soundtrack in a romantic movie!! 😍🎶🎵❤️
Thank you for using polymoog as midi keyboard. Wish you would have layered ploymoog sounds with external sounds. Not shade, a fan.
top!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Showing your complete range here dude, amazing. Is this on loan or part of your permanent collection?
Thanks a lot Benjamin. I am lucky to own a working Polymoog 203a!
@@shookmusic Yes you are! Such a beautiful and misunderstood synthesizer.....
So funky! Love how you play the Poly! What EHX pedal is this freq shifter specificly? The ehx phaser or frequency analyzer pedal? Didnt quite get it
Looks like an ehx bad stone
Gary Numan owns the Vox Humana so to speak.
yours is labelled 'polymoog keyboard' which means its an early version I believe. do you know what the serial number is on it?
Smooth all the way 👍🏽
