  • Locke’s Background and education
John Locke was born in Wrington, England, in 1632 after the English Civil War. Locke went to Westminster School in London. After being successful at Westminster, Locke went to Christ Church, University of Oxford, where he studied medicine and science and became a professor.
    Locke’s ideas
He believed that live life liberty and property were unalienable rights given by natural law. Within his work, Two Treatises of Government, he stresses that these rights limited the sovereign, usually the king or another form of authoritative power. Of the 3 rights, he considered property to be the most important natural rule. He cared for conservation and thought that you can do what you want with your property as long as you don’t destroy it.
Topic 3 - Locke’ s effect on the U.S. government
John Locke greatly affected the principles upon which the government of the United States was founded. Thomas Jefferson was vastly influenced by John Locke, this can be seen in the declaration of independence. “Life, Liberty and the pursuit of happiness” are very similar to Locke’s ideas of natural rights of “life, liberty, and property”. Locke’s other idea that if the government does not protect the laws of the citizen then the people have the right to overthrow the government. This is seen in the idea of the consent of the governed and rule of law.
