    It's a circle. "Everything works in circles. Like sometimes you're doing something, and a year later you're back at the same point. You understand that? So circle one, is what we're doing now, and someday we'll probably do circle two." That's how they described it in their movie.

      I was about 14 in 1984 when I first heard it from Surburbia, by then No God 7" was out of print, I was on a quest to find it, it took me years to get a bad audio copy... Kids today have no idea the quests we went on to get music.

      @@mikecarter8880 that's always what I say to younger punk fans. It was nearly impossible to find copies of more obscure bands' music. I'd look for years to no avail. Once the Internet took off I could finally hear all the '80s hardcore that was out of print by the time I came of age in the '90s. Got into the Germs because of an LA Times article review of MIA and I found the cassette; it was love at first listen with "Forming".

    Read any of Friedrich Nietzsche and you will have an understanding of Darby's lyrical content. Many people don't realize how layered and textured Darby's art form really was. He was a true artistic genius. No one save for maybe Bowie has approached the consciousness he did with just one complete album. It's a shame, but perhaps fitting, he died so young.

      He sort of lived Nietzsche's philosophy of irrationalism and unbridled passion to reach new heights. The upside is those familiar with the philosophy and appreciative of it will understand but others won't. When journalists write of him they tend to only skim the surface (the epitome of live fast, die young). He actually knew exactly what he was doing the entire time. He wanted to start a movement with him as the leader and he did. He also acknowledged it would not last and would eventually be a memory shared by those who had participated - which is exactly what has happened. Knowing of his art and that movement, even if one wasn't there to see it firsthand (like myself) is like a small bit of satisfaction to have. The intellectual community may never be able to give it the justice it was due - but perhaps that is fitting as well.

      @ECCO There were actually several punk artists that embraced prog's more experimental side (particularly stuff like the short lived Rock In Opposition movement (which had a pretty damn punk ethos in it's own right with it's vehement anti-commercialism and radical leftist anti-capitalism leanings), Canterbury Scene and Krautrock) and ran with it. Perfect examples are This Heat, Cassiber (both of which had prog veterans in their lineups), Ludus, Glenn Branca, and Public Image Ltd.

      there is plenty of punk still around, the problem is the same thing that was always the problem. a bunch of fast loud aggressive but completely generic unexciting and unoriginal hardcore influenced lousy shit. it doesnt matter what style or genre of music it is, you have the bands that are good and then you have a ton of bands doing the same thing and prioritizing what ever it is that you like about the music, whether it is melodies or rhythms or if its speed and aggressiveness or whatever. but in the end their songs are bland and forgettable because their material just flat out isnt good. too many people act like ANY band is good just as long as they are fast and loud, but a shitty fast and loud song is still shitty. in my opinion punk was at its peak before hardcore took everything over in the early 80s. the 80s was filled with so much shitty ultra fast screaming hardcore bullshit, endlessly bitching about Reagan or Thatcher, yawn.

      The Germs were Yes fans, because it is beautiful music, which felt to Yes fans that love songs for both a person and a people or a culture could come true, and were starting to come true with the hippie dream of the late 60s, early 1970s----but by 1978 and 79 that dream was dead. President Carter's Crisis of Confidence speech still hid the brutalities he himself perpetuated, by poisoning Marijuana and the environment with Paraquat and other toxins, by destroying citizen protections, by allowing corporations to run amuck, and all that was coming true was more dystopia, more pollution, more despair and hatred, more frigidity and erotic desperation, more police state---and one gets the feeling that the collapse of hoped for Utopia and the rise of the Jerry Falwell/Right Wing was why the great Pat Smear put that pretty guitar intro in, then slamming it right into the horror, those harsh murdering chords slashing as a revolt against the revoltingness of America by the end of the 70s and beginning of the avarice sick 80s and all the other vilenesses, and Bang! It is the reality, even more so now. No God. Nope. Nothing. Damn right.

    Woah Darby Crash is gay? *Sarcasm* Who cares if he was, Darby is still a legend. Even despite being a heroin junkie his lyrics inspired many musicians outside the punk scene. To prove my point i saw Flea(RHCP) a couple nights ago on the Daily Show with Jon Stewart, and he had a Germs shirt. I don't see how being gay changes this at all. No matter what your guy's opinion of what "punk" is, unity will always be part of the definition. Remember that next time you find out one of your idols are gay.

    Please note this... This band subverts the meaning of these lyrics beautifully and ironically! How so? Listen to that chanting in the backing vocals! "God lives! god lives!" with the cute clapping as accompaniment! Whoa.. Again... Don't you hear it...?
    Buried in the background is some vocal chanting by [other] (or maybe all?) members of the band... You can hear it more clearly at 1:27... It sounds like they are chanting "God lives, god lives... [clap, clap of their hands percussively] (repeat)...".
    Until this song was digitized, I NEVER could hear that before on the analog versions, especially on a cassette tape from a radio broadcast many years ago from a distant Iowa listerner-supported radio station when I first heard this song in the '80s long after the band broke up and Darby was dead...
    Love 'em or hate 'em (or just plain ignore them)... The Germs couldn't take themselves SERIOUSLY on all levels, and, ironically: they suck, and are great at the same time. I've had people (pro' musicians) get upset when I've expressed some admiration for The Germs. But who cares? They made R'n'R dangerous and fun!

    Darby took demon possession to dizzying new heights. He makes incredibly good points about why God is irrelevant to modern man. Too bad our deadbeat father "god" still judges us on judgement day. Nobody ever judges him though, he's too powerful. He says he is holy, take him at his word, or else.

    • @basknation

      demon possession?

    • @basknation
      @basknation 8 років тому +1

      ok i apologise for language my bad. but honestly, demonic possession? no you have to rethink this one. Among other (worldly) things things that possessed Darby was an incredible amount of talent that he had trouble keeping a handle on and past that probably kept him in such an amount of pain he saw no other way out. Any demons belonged to his psyche. Again sorry for insulting you, shite day.

      fear and hatred of God is classic Oedipus syndrome God is almost as irrefutable as it is unprovable. any conclusions are faith or opinion based even atheistic ones. questioning it is the only real way to connect to it..so it's a great cosmic irony..just as temporal existence itself is impossible without cause and effect, but what causes the cause?the great fractal vexes logic.yet here we are.
