I don't understand why the narrator says one of his hands is hidden below the table.?
I always thought that the expressions of all the disciples were when they were just told by Jesus that one of them would betray Him. That’s why each disciple is so full of expression of being overwhelmed almost. Trying to figure out which one and why.

Judas Iscariot received thirty pieces of silver (the price of a stolen or lost slave) after he left the table. He was the usual keeper of the coins, so holding a purse would identify him in this painting. According to the Gospel of John 12, verse 6, he also found occasion to dip into the funds for his own use.
I’m sure someone with imagination could use any other element of that painting and propose an entirely different interpretation. Da Vinci has probably never intended those details to mean anything special.

@johngeraghty1735 I reckon this scene is after Jesus pronounced Judas to be a traitor, which is why one man is missing, Judas, and the remaining apostles are all talking to each other and Mary and not with Jesus. Jesus has dropped the bomb shell, and the others are discussing the revelation.
@andymartinez767 Such a Smartelic. Of course I wasn't there doofus. And neither was DaVinci. Nothing more than a Painting. It's not the real scene of what happened.

The artist was indeed a unique person with a genius, exceptional intellectual or creative power or other natural ability. It is entirely possible that he knew what he was doing by placing hidden secrets in his painting.
“Peter’s hand is on John’s shoulder”. Why is the color of Peter’s sleeve, on that hand, not the same color as the sleeve on the hand holding the knife? Time: 7:59.
It looks to me like what we're seeing with his hand that's near John, actually IS the color of the other sleeve right there just under his wrist. This makes me think that what I'm seeing that's a different color could be like a mantle draping over his actual sleeve. A lot of prophets wore mantles back then - Samuel, Elijah, Elisha - and Peter would fit the role of a prophet. That's my interpretation of why the difference, anyway.
The mantle is covering most of the sleeve, but you can can see the blue cuff of the sleeve. His hand is not on HER shoulder. He is whispering to her and and gesturing towards Jesus. Honestly, if that's a man, da Vinci had a stroke when he painted 'him'. She does not look masculine in any way. Compare her to the men surrounding her.
I’m not convinced. Just as beauty is in the eye of the beholder’, so is ‘significance’ and ‘meaning’. We see what we want to see, always. So there are ‘four groups of three’, but why? Interpretation is just guesswork.
The painting is thought to be a depiction of the argument over transubstantiation, when Jesus says This is my body, this is my blood. Those on the right of Jesus accept this as true, those on Jesus'a left are repulsed.
You can create narratives out of any painting to suit your purpose be it this or Mona lisa or Michael Angelo's frescoes. I take it with a pinch of salt.
Many artists were commissioned to paint these religious paintings. The bible was used as a reference along with the desires of the Church (who often commissioned such paintings). Many artists, like da Vinci, would sneak in their own ideas and interpretations.
I am a Christian, believe wholy in Jesus but I think this picture has been way over thought. Some of these things are just natural human posing and don't mean a thing. You can see alot of things in any picture and decide what's going on.
Believe or disbelieve, the figure of John being construed as Mary Magdalene is still very interesting to me. Everyone is reacting to Jesus in some way, but John (or Mary) does appear to be out of place in his reaction, or the lack thereof. In the "Da Vinci Code" we see how you can move the figure to the other side of Jesus where it then interacting with him and thus makes more sense. I don't think it proves Jesus and Mary were married as the book contends. I do think, however, it raises the question of what da Vinci believed. There's another thing I notice. The book points the space between Jesus and Mary as the chalice. Let's assume it does show a chalice, but instead of that proving John is Mary, look at what is near this chalice--the glass of wine Jesus is reaching for. His other hand is reaching for bread. In the negative space on that side, you see the raised finger--divine bread was the mana that fed the Jews in the desert for 40 years. What I get from that is what the Catholics call Transubstantiation--when the mundane bread actually transformed into the body of Christ in the Eucharist. It could be one more layer of da Vinci's meanings.
De Vinci didn't put any hidden messages in the painting he just painted what it would look like in his vision. If you want some hidden messages in a painting I got some finger painting stuff down in the basement that I did a kindergarten back in the early 60s you can figure it out what I put the message.
Observation: For centuries the church teaches this is the Passover celebration where Jesus institutes the so called "eucharist". Well, this is not a Passover table, this is a "Mithraic" table..! In a Passover table there are many elements missing in this table like the roasted lamb, bottles of wine, the order plate with the elements or spices, unleavened bread or "matza" is missing and instead there are loaves of leavened bread which was forbidden during the 7 days feast..! This is the table of Mithras where only wine and leavened bread was offered to "males only". According to the Hebrew scriptures this is a highly pagan observance. Nice origins of the church huh????
Why are the archways/windows on the left high, but low on the right? Why 10 large pieces of bread on the table, and 6 small pieces (assuming that is bread too), when there are 13 of them? Did they order a table for 26, but all wanted to sit on one side? Or are they looking out a window as well, and setting tables to the wall for the view was normal in those days?
Sometimes if you leave things alone just as they are without Divulging into them you’re better off leaving it alone sometimes we say things that aren’t there my personal opinion
Jesus joined his followers to celebrate the Jewish Passover.. after Jesus told Judas to go in John 13- 27-30. he had left after the Passover meal . It was then the lords evening meal was implemented by Jesus. This was to grant his faithful followers a place in his kingdom as kings…. So Judas was not at the last supper only the Passover.. Da Vinci had this particular detail wrong… two celebrations not one.
This painting is just an interpretation of the last supper. The last supper the table was actually u shaped. There is the head of the table, which was on the right side and the foot of the table on the left side we know that John sat at the head of the table and Jesus sat next to him. Next to Jesus was judas, and at the foot of the table sat Peter. We don’t actually know where the rest of the disciples sat. There were no women at the table only Jesus and his disciples. everyone else would have been at home celebrating the passover with their families, according to their customs
I always thought it strange that everyone is on one side of the table. In reality, it should be a round table. If not, Jesus should be facing the disciples on the opposite side of the table. His face could be turned to one side for visibility.
i have read several biographies of Leonardo, who was a fascinating historical figure. he was likely the model for Michelangelo's David. he was accused of sodomy at one point and faced a possible death sentence and disappeared for a year until the heat died down and he moved to a different city. of course, he studied all manner of scientific and artistic expression. one of his early discoveries is what is called "camera obscura." when the Medici's needed a "relic" to support one of their family for pope, it is said Leonardo used hundred year old cloth and camera obscura to make a certain shroud said to be that of Jesus' tomb. and voila! one of the Medici's became pope.
People acting like da vinci was actually there lol its only a depiction of what one thinks of the last supper that's it. Da vinci literally painted it from his mind. The last supper was more than likely nothing like this depiction at all.
Dear lady with the voice, this is not a polaroid, da Vinci was not there, nor did he interview anyone that was there. If da Vinci could hear all the speculation about this really just OK work, he would get a great laugh, as he has played you all that argue about it.
Remember, Leonardo painted what HE thought would be nice. He was a Catholic who did not know, thanks to the pope, that he was painting lies he was told growing up. Jesus did NOT have long hair, nor did he dress differently from every other Jew. Mostof the depiction I. The so called Last Supper were Leo’s imagination.
In that the time of Jesus with his disciples they didn't all eat at a table on the same side. They reclined with thier feet away from the eating area. The painting doesn't prove anything let alone the time period.
Very good up to the point you decide to state the absurd and nonsensical ‘all hidden in plain sight’ I wouldn’t have been able to take seriously anything you said after that.

There are two Last Supper paintings being used in this narration. Looks like one of them copied Leonardo's, but the faces look different. You can easily tell the difference. And the reference to the bag Judas is holding as possibly the 30 pieces of silver he received for betraying Jesus is simply ridiculous since his betrayal and receipt of the silver hasn't happened yet. There are many other discrepancies in this. Not very well done.
Back then they didn’t sit around a table like in the picture. They reclined on benches or even sat on floors. I don’t think this picture represents what the ladt supper looked like. It fits what the Catholic church wants you to see not the customs of the Jewish people.
