I was speaking to my mother just this morning about that. He was on the television when I too was just a child but explaining to my mom that my new found respect and admiration for one of her peers is testament to the greatness of her generation. Tavis Smiley is informed, he is on message, he is articulate, and he has a concrete understanding of his life’s purpose. It’s truly inspirational to see someone operating in their purpose, and being of service to and who has not abandoned their community. He is Us and it is because of this that I’m truly proud to be connected with him. Tavis Smiley is My Brother ✊🏽

This is my cousin and he’s a very good man. Let me tell you why…
In 1993, Tavis was doing The Smiley Report, a daily segment on KGFJ radio. I would always listen to him while driving home from the office. I was an entertainment producer at the time, promoting and producing the biggest fashion entertainment shows in Los Angeles.
I needed a new commentator and thought to play with our last names, creating a buzz and people questioned if we were related. So I asked Tavis to do it. He nervously said yes because this was a little out of his element. I just told him to have fun, make jokes and show people the not so serious Tavis. He didn’t know what to charge me. So he asked for $175 for the event. I wrote him a check for $500. Tavis didn’t know his STAR POWER in Los Angeles at the time. I sure did. My radio advertisements would include him as our special guest and commentator. We would sell out seats as more celebrities would attend my events.
We had the biggest fashion entertainment production, traveling across the U.S. during 1989-2007. I thank Tavis for being part of it from 1993-94

From the first time I saw Brother Tavis back in the day, I have been a fan. The entire interview was well worth the 2+ hours spent. I’m so glad that he clarified his position on the Obama situation. I appreciate his transparency, humility and integrity. Great interview!!

I am so blessed and graciously grateful for this magnanimous forum and interview with Tavis Smiley. He is grounded by the foundation of what shaped him in becoming the statue of the man he is and that is his family and Spirituality. Thank you so much for sharing

This was a really engaging interview!!! Loved it! Shawn Prez led a great conversation. Tavis is unmatched and a great storyteller. When was this interview conducted? Did anyone notice that Tavis referred to some people in the interview who have passed on in the present tense? I wonder if that's intentional.

Mr Smiley did an interview a few years back with D’Angelo, who NEVER does interviews. And it’s one of the best interviews I’ve ever seen. No one in media has his conversational skills

I've had this conversation with my mother during Obama's presidency. My mother accused both Tavis Smiley and Cornell West of being jealous of Obama. I argued that they were never and could never be jealous of Obama. They both (Smiley & West) are extremely accomplished gentlemen, and both are learned individuals. They believed that they were doing what they felt was necessary for the advancement of the marginalized. Full stop.
