I'm 61 years old and have been listening to Rush since the mid-late 70's, this is my favorite Rush song. I saw this tour in Birmingham Alabama back in 1986. Those graphics were amazing for that time.
Think about the VISION that Neil had- It used to be a farm before the motor law. And- A brilliant red Barchetta from a better managed time. He foresaw what we’re going through now! He was BRILLIANT!!

Rush was my first concert, in 1982, on the “Moving Pictures” tour, the album that contains this song. I was a freshman in high school, and was eagerly devouring all of the albums in their discography up to that point. I just had money from lawn cutting jobs, so after I paid for the ticket, I didn’t have enough left to buy a “Moving Pictures” tour tee shirt, but they had some leftover shirts from the preceding “Permanent Waves” tour for half price, so that’s what I got. I wore that shirt out, and all those early Rush albums. You have a lot of greatness to discover!
I saw Rush in concert back in January he 80’s, the music was so clean and crisp it didn’t even sound loud for a live concert. There is sooo much more Rush music out there for you to enjoy.
Since you’re also a big Tool fan, don’t forget to dive into the lyrics of Rush. The music obviously holds up, but the words far from being an afterthought. Neil Peart was skillful wordsmith who could really turn a phrase and always had something interesting and meaningful to say. Great reaction!
"That drummer is so badass"... That he is, and you ain't seen nothing yet. If you want to see him at his absolute peak, check out 'YYZ' sometime. An instrumental where all three just unleash for 7 minutes straight.
I saw Rush with Styx opening at the Birmingham Jefferson Civic Center and to this day I couldn’t believe the damn show wasn’t sold out! Yes, it was one of the best concerts I’ve ever seen.
Three guys! Three guys! The seventies! Legends... all geniuses at their craft. Yes,, Neil Peart was one of the very best rock drummers of ALL time!! RIP ♥ 🥁 🎸 🎤
Did you know that Geddy Lee plays bass, keyboards, programmed supplemental stuff and sings all at the same time!!! And he writes the melodies (the drummer writes the lyrics). So wow.
R.I.P. Professor, one of my heroes. That being said, you could literally react to Rush for more than a year and never do one song twice. The thing about Rush is that they were insanely great live. Neal wrote the lyrics and is the best percussionist to ever live.....Geddy is a master at playing Bass & Keys.....Alex is ridiculously underrated as a guitarist. I saw them 3 times and feel blessed. Some diehard fans have seen them 80-100 times.
The freedom of the road! defiance of authority .. and naturally those guys play like gods. It's so hard when you find out your parents are mortal .. when my old man died out of the blue it was tough .. he loved Rush but he was old school and I remember hearing him play Chicago Transit Authority. Every time I hear 25 or 6 to 4 I remember him and it makes me grin.
Saw this tour live as a 13yr old, anything and everything from this film, as it is part of a concert video played on Canadian tv in 81 I think, so long ago, but not so long ago in my head.
This is probably my favorite Rush song ... one of my fondest memories is listening to this song while flying up US24 from Colorado Springs to Woodland Park in a '70 Porsche 914 I used to own. Wind in my hair ... shifting and drifting ... mechanical music ... adrenaline surge (damn I miss that car).
Loved watching your reaction as the sing went on: hint of a smile, smile, grin, head bob. This has long been a road trip standard of mine, though I had to remove it from the rotation for a while - for precisely the reason you mentioned. I got three speeding tickets thanks to the red barchetta. Truly enjoyed the video.
Who knew that Tom Hanks could play drums?😳 Seriously though, Neil Peart wasn't kidding, he was very serious and arguably one of the best drummers to have graced us with their talent. Great song 😊

Rush was a funny group of guys..they would have washer dryer going on stage washing their clothes and keeping beat. They would also have pop corn machine on stage…🙌🏻🎶❤️🔥
One of my fondest memories is standing with my wife on one side of me and our son on the other as we watched and listened to Rush play this song at the Gorge amphitheater in George, Washington. It was the Time Machine tour and we were about 20 feet away from Alex's side of the stage. What a long, strange trip it's been from my first Rush show. 27-March-1976 and Rush was the opening band for Styx.
As a writer myself, I've always looked up to Neil as someone who showed me that it was OK to make references or connections that weren't in the minds of the common man. He is the only stranger I would consider a long-awaited friend and I could have only hoped he'd feel the same about me or any one of us, though we Rush fans know how he felt about such a statement. I wish I had been born in the mid-60s instead of the mid-90s, just to experience these bands firsthand. These guys always seemed like such inviting, personable dudes, and being the loner I was, I could've used that connection maybe a little bit more. "Subdivisions" is my favorite song of theirs, followed closely by "The Trees," a song which helped me to pass a creative writing course some years back. RIP Professor. Any and all future thunderstorms, with their might and beauty, we attribute to you.
@@jamieklewis for me it's a cross between Jerry Bruckheimer colours and speed racer style framing. An old English countryside, an old car running from futuristic police.
The full concert video of this has a little monologue from Neil about the song, how it’s a metaphor for freedom and family and also a futuristic sort of coming of age tale.
G.O.A.T. Remember only 3 guys! Seen these guys many times….and lots of other concerts. Greatest musicians in one band. They will never be duplicated. They sound like “Rush”. By far the greatest drummer that ever lived!
I’ve played guitar since before high school, and when I got into Rush in college, this song inspired me to start working on bass. I picked up a cheap $75 instrument and learned this one and Limelight right away. Very rewarding. The studio version is recording perfection. Cheers!
I'm so glad you are doing live performances. With only 3 guys it's so amazing how talented they are as a group. They are my all time favorite band by far
This song probably had the most popular air drum fills in concert. They’re so distinct and there’s so much breathing room in the song that they’re easy to catch on to. The song itself is about a dystopian world where the old cars were banned, and the author breaks the laws and eludes the sensors (eyes) to slip out to the country to joyride. The cops catch up to him in their aircar and he has to race to the single lane bridge that they’re too wide to cross. Great imagery in the lyrics
FYI, those graphics were the ones played on a large screen behind the band, during the song (the same for all other graphics shown in videos from this concert (Xanadu etc).
Polo, I don't know who is recommending these Rush songs to you, but trust me, these are tier 3 songs in my opinion. When you listen to tier 1 and 2 songs, you'll be blown away. The songs themselves, the musicianship and the lyrics.
Funny fact about most guitarist live performance and their Wall of amps. Geddy plays a Hartke bass Amp that's a 24" white dwarf of an amp w/sub zero hrz. As a joke he always will puts up a wall of commercial appliances. One tour he had a wall a rotisserie chicken cookers filled with rubber chicken, he also had a wall of laudrymat dryers...
6:54..That nasty lick you keep referring to by Alex is the car horn going, beep-beep-beep beep-What creativity! "Red Barchetta's" one of my top 5 driving songs...It was made by Ferrari in the 50's..Independent all-wheel suspension, fuel injected big V8 in a small 2 seater convertible, 0-60 mph in 4.1. You had to custom order 1 then, and you still do now. Great song by an iconic band that'll never be forgotten.
I love this song, my older brother turned me on to it. Where Polo says “its nasty !” Just so true, it’s a heavy transition. It’s in my top 5 of Rush songs.
The Drummer, Neil Peart, is probably the best person to ever play the instrument. That's not opinion, that's fact. Ask anybody who knows Rock music. Look at all Top drummer lists, he'll always be near the top if not at the top!! If you really want a taste of Rush, you absolutely need to listen to YYZ. it's an instrumental, and it really show's you what they can do, it's incredible! RIP Neil.
I dont care who the "objective" best is otherwise people can just go to a mainstream magazine that does that kind of cliche' list for fans. I do however consider Neil as one of the finest Rock drummers ever to have come along.
When Dave Grohl helped induct RUSH into the Rock Hall (after several years they were eligible!!) he called out “Who lets the drummer write the lyrics??” Which is really true, when Neil joined RUSH after their first drummer left (diabetes concern) -Neil P’ was the primary writer -rare. I only saw RUSH once live, in 2011, while my z brother saw them four times. (Some fans have rights to 100+ concerts) I was quite happy to see RUSH play some favorite songs like “Red Barchetta” or “Subdivisions” -yet, really, the three men of RUSH are so talented. When Neil did his improv drum solo…serious, to experience!! Glad they could decide to stop touring, when some health issues were obvious to them. As a band for 40 years, they ended, in their own terms, before Neil died.
This song means so much now that California is trying to limit where you can drive and when you can drive your classic cars and basically they want to outlaw them outright.
I was at this concert (or at least one on this very same tour). I remember Alex in his blue jeans, white shirt and red jacket. I remember the video graphics which seemed cheesy even in that day. But it was the best concert of my life. RIP Neil Peart, one of the greatest drummers to ever grace us with his talent combined with his truly wonderful skill as a lyricist. At 4:02 you see him throw the drumstick into the air with his right hand, then catch it again at 4:04. I was blown away by how high in the air above their entire set that stick went and he caught it flawlessly and boom, right back into the song. I am pretty sure at the concert I was at there was a longer pause as it went very high. (Portland OR)
This is one of my very favourite Rush songs 🎵 ❤️ Rush are amazing at telling stories with their music. I would suggest Natural Science from the Molson Amphitheatre Toronto Digital Man from the Snakes and Arrows tour La Villa Strangiato official music video 2112 Comic book or lyric video Caravan from the Time Machine Tour Cheers
Not only was Neil Peart one of the greatest drummers ever, he was also the primary songwriter. He LOVED to read and not the common stuff. A lot of lyrics came from those books he read. I often feel like Alex Lifeson doesn't get his due and is overlooked. Imagine RUSH without his guitar playing. It doesn't work. After Neil's death, Geddy and Alex said they'll never tour as RUSH or headline shows again. That's a crapload of respect in my opinion. Besides, no one could ever replace Neil Peart. If you want a seriously underrated drummer and frankly, the entire band is underrated, check out Styx. Please do a reaction video to Come Sail Away the live show in Denver 2016. They've been around since the 70's and don't get the recognization they deserve. In fact they were opening for Def Leppard on that tour. DL was great but Styx blew them out of the water. It wasn't even close. Todd Sucherman is the drummer and I can watch him play for hours. He's incredible. Lead vocals are shared by JY (piano and synth) and Tommy Shaw (lead guitarist). You won't regret it. I promise. :}
The drummer Neil Peart was a mighty inspiration and friend to Tool's Danny Carey, if someone has not commented already (as much as you were smitten by Tool and especially Danny)
Not only a great song with a compelling story, but remarkably prescient. It says in the song "he says it used to be a farm before the motor law". This was from 1980 and where are we now? We have a "motor law" banning petrol and diesel cars from 2030 and farms are being closed down. Great reaction to a great song.

Digital Man from the Snakes and Arrows tour
La Villa Strangiato official music video
2112 Comic book or lyric video
Caravan from the Time Machine Tour
Cheers
All 3 dudes are world-class musicians, but Neil is a top 3 all-time drummer.
If you want to see Neil Peart just straight rocking on the drums check out him doing the Hockey theme.
Love your reaction! Subbed for more Rush, please.
When I bought my first sports car, this was the first song to grace the speakers!!! 🚗 💨
🏆🏆🏆WELL DONE!!
Mu brother Timmy passed. I was his younger brother. His favorite band. Fucking albums brother. The sound and warmth . Hairs raising
Not only was Neil Peart one of the greatest drummers ever, he was also the primary songwriter. He LOVED to read and not the common stuff. A lot of lyrics came from those books he read. I often feel like Alex Lifeson doesn't get his due and is overlooked. Imagine RUSH without his guitar playing. It doesn't work. After Neil's death, Geddy and Alex said they'll never tour as RUSH or headline shows again. That's a crapload of respect in my opinion. Besides, no one could ever replace Neil Peart.
If you want a seriously underrated drummer and frankly, the entire band is underrated, check out Styx. Please do a reaction video to Come Sail Away the live show in Denver 2016. They've been around since the 70's and don't get the recognization they deserve. In fact they were opening for Def Leppard on that tour. DL was great but Styx blew them out of the water. It wasn't even close. Todd Sucherman is the drummer and I can watch him play for hours. He's incredible. Lead vocals are shared by JY (piano and synth) and Tommy Shaw (lead guitarist). You won't regret it. I promise. :}
The Holy Trinity of Drummers:
Neil Peart
Danny Carey
John Bonham
3 of them! Amazing!
Thanks Brother
Permanent Waves was my go to roadtrip cassette 😂
The drummer Neil Peart was a mighty inspiration and friend to Tool's Danny Carey, if someone has not commented already (as much as you were smitten by Tool and especially Danny)
Not only a great song with a compelling story, but remarkably prescient. It says in the song "he says it used to be a farm before the motor law". This was from 1980 and where are we now? We have a "motor law" banning petrol and diesel cars from 2030 and farms are being closed down. Great reaction to a great song.
I'm sure that we all agree that Rush is a total RUSH. Start this journey when I bought fly by night when it came out.
Great reaction and analysis 👏. The entire album, Moving Pictures, is amazing. You should do a track by track reaction. See what you think.
Definitely a song for the road... Good video...
"Four-Runner" approved! 👍🏽😁
Best drummer ever. Some say top 2. Best bassist ever, some say top 5. Great guitarist, I say top 10, some say top 50. And nice guys too
