The cast and crew of Apple TV Plus’ “Defending Jacob” reunited for a conversation in Variety’s Streaming Room about the limited drama series, which stars Chris Evans and Michelle Dockery as Andy and Laurie Barber, parents of a 14-year-old boy (Jaeden Martell) accused of murdering a classmate. They were joined by co-stars Cherry Jones and J.K. Simmons, and the show’s creator/writer Mark Bomback and director Morten Tyldum to discuss the twists and turns of the series, which aired eight episodes from April 24 - May 29.
Based on the 2012 novel by William Landay, Bomback says the story was originally sent to him as a potential film, but he saw it as a limited series. “It’s not really the kind of story we make as films anymore, certainly not for the multiplex,” Bomback noted. “You can envision what the film would have been. It would have been a lot of plot, a lot of just engine and not really enough time to focus on character.” It was that character exploration that appealed to Bomback, who added he wanted to “really deep dive in terms of character and what it means to be a human being.
While the series ends on a somewhat ambiguous note about Jacob’s guilt or innocence, Martell said he had to make up his own mind in order to play the role “The first question I had for them, of course, is whether he did it or not. And they just said, ‘You choose. You decide for yourself and don’t tell anybody.’” Martell revealed. “It’s interesting, just being able to walk around and be in a scene and look at Chris and Michelle, and know that I know something that they don’t know.”
Evans, who is also an executive producer on the series, noted, “The end result of whether or not he did it isn’t as interesting as seeing two people, Andy and Laurie, grapple with the circumstance. They both love their son equally. It’s just there’s two different people - Andy’s had a lifetime of developing the skills to compartmentalize and bury things down and do what he needs to do in order to keep this belief system intact. And when presented with the same uncertainty, Laurie has a very different approach. Laurie can’t cope. Laurie can’t be a part of that web of deceit. And so, it’s not even about whether he did it or didn’t. It’s about how two different people grapple with that uncertainty.”

I think he plays him as innocent but I think the actual story and directing subtext point more to him being guilty, as is the case in the book

Andy is supposed to not have known about the story ("A Walk In The Woods") Jacob wrote which is read by Derek in court at trial. When there is a flashback of Andy checking out the Cut Up Room, you see him checking his phone - AND RIGHT THERE IS THE STORY - HOW DID ANDY NOT SEE IT?!

I felt so bad for the dad. I think he didn’t see his son faults because he wanted to have the perfect family. I think his father played a tragic role in his life. With his father being in jail for conducting a heinous crime which caused him and his mother to state he was passed away because they were embarrassed of him. It also probably led for him to be an assistant DA so he was the opposite of his dad. Then once it was obvious his son killed his classmate, he refused to see it even though his wife saw the signs and knew in her heart her son was guilty. I think covering up for his son and wife in the end probably destroyed him and his family would never be the whether or not their son recovers from the accident. His dad told him, you can be a good father or a good man…that was a no win situation for him since I think his decisions will change him.

This series is living proof that ambiguity is overrated; these people simply weren't brave enough to make a decision. They assumed an ambiguous version would automatically be more interesting. It wasn't. I wish Jaeden had read the book and played that. The book is way better. There's enough room for the parents to wonder and not know. And then there's the knowing and the dread of THAT.

That's interesting because that's the first time I've heard or seen someone say it wasn't interesting. I wish we knew whether or not he did it. But it being left open intrigues me way more than a closed ending. Ambiguity is what made me love it, it's not overrated and I definitely don't think this series is living proof of it, however that's your opinion and people are different. The ending leaves open to interpretation, which the parents and the audience were doing anyway.
Is he really so bad that he's acting innocent so convincingly? (at least to me until Mexico and then I thought he was innocent again just before they crash) Is he really innocent and is just in his head to avoid the reality so he doesn't see how bad the blindspots look? If they had made a second season I would have watched it, and I still would.

Really? I think it was Pats. Remember in the second episode when we saw him deleting pictures of Ben from his phone? The police never found ou about that, but if they did, I think they would have investigated more. Idk, it's hard to know, I mean, Jacob is also kinda sus.

@@mariamabuokada1982 i understand that and if there was less screen time with jacob and more with pats, i would think the same but since there was so much evidence put against jacob, i truly do believe that pats was just a creep that could be easily perceived as guilty.
