Idk. I thought that the first time around but I recently rewatched it and noticed something. Both men used to dig coal, both men got out because they were afraid. However raylan was afraid of a cave in, while Boyd was afraid of black lung. Meaning one of them was afraid of the present and the other, the future. One of them was scared of being crushed by external forces the other afraid of being eaten alive by a sickness within. I don't think they are the same man, more like two halves of the same coin, similar but opposite. They both have an anger problem but Boyd's is inborn, raylan's was beaten into him. They both have a problem with authority but raylan remembers being beaten by authority, Boyd wants it for himself and doesn't like to see others with it. Boyd is fighting against the darkness within himself while raylan is trying to come to terms with the darkness that was put him by a horrible childhood. I think Boyd thinks they are the same because he can't accept that they aren't, he can't accept that a devil lives in his blood and his skin can barely contain the heat of it. He wants to believe that raylan is his mirror because raylan has an excuse(sort of) for his behaviour and deep down, Boyd knows he doesn't. They are similar men but what made them that way is drastically different.
Best damn show of all time. Named my son Raylan. Stands for more than just a show. Stands for reason, common sense and justice. Something America had lost
Justified is hands down one of my favorite TV shows in the past 10 years and one of my favorite TV shows of all time. And Raylan and Boyd Crowder are hands down two of my favorite TV characters of all time.

Same here I just finished binge watching it again last week for the third time. I watched it when it ran on FX so finishing it last week makes it the fourth time i've watched it all the way through.
I love that they did that. People have a tendency to make the assumption that because we're from the hills, we're ignorant. Just 'cause we talk slow, don't make us stupid.
I think the finale was as much to honor Elmore Leonard as to end the series. the quiet references to the pilot were to give the fans bookended start and finish. and to let them all leave alive but not free...not safe....more true to the nature of the show. do you wonder if Loretta in the future becomes the queen of Harlan? the next Mags? and yeah I adored the show and Raylan Givens...the coolest character ever on TV.
I think Loretta saw Raylan as a surrogate father figure & it would not surprise me one bit if she followed Raylan's footsteps & went into law enforcement (do we see spinoff here?); what would really be cool is if she joined the Cin City (Cincinnati, OH) USA PD & took on the remnants of the notorious Newport, KY Mafia, outlaw biker gangs, alt-right terrorists, & maybe a Russian mobster or two, amongst other big bads. The possibilities are mind boggling....

The final was just perfect, I liked it more than the one of some of other series that I liked more overall. Another thing I really enjoyed - every important dialogue no matter between friends, enemies or strangers was accompanied by high quality bourbon :)
Apart from the beginning where Raylan shot Boyd, no matter how much they fought or acted like they would kill each other, Raylan and Boyd would never do so. They had too much respect for one another. And the had a deep bond, from digging coal together. Which meant more than any family feuds.
Yes. Raylan and Boyd had the drop on each other so many times. They could have killed each 50 times over by the end. Besides the fact of digging coal together. They were friends. A rough friendship. But friends none the less.
I never thought of Boyd as the bad guy. He did bad things. But, like he said to Raylan. “We’re just alike.” Raylan indignantly denied that. But you saw in his eyes he knew it was true. My favorite Boyd scene EVER was in Season 2,:when the coal mine executives were there to buy up land(and strip it of everything living, but I digress). In that town meeting Boyd stood in the center of that crowded room, the Kentucky state flag on the wall behind him. And he gave the most impassioned soliloquy since Kenneth Branagh as Henry V! Thank the Lord for DVD sets!
Of course Boyd is a bad guy and it’s so well written that you feel sympathy for him.. but he killed innocent people.. bought and sold drugs.... Raylan .. well as far as I can tell he only killed those who has earned it
@@boydersoftheshire2035 For a Boyder, you sure aren't loyal to Boyd. , I disagree about Raylan. he didn't follow the law. Cops should not be judge jury and executioner.
