In Russia it seems change of leadership requires catastrophic upheaval of society. I prefer the messy but orderly process of democracy. Rule of law over personality cults.
There are personality cults in democracies as well.
Yep nothing wrong with a system that can dumb the Prime minister if he breaks rules like Boris did. its called being Answeable.
Yeah, I prefer prime ministers over presidents: the moment there is no longer a majority, the prime minister falls. It just seems the only thing a president wants is more and more power.
Representative democracy isn't as democratic as direct democracy. Most of our representatives that we vote for are bought and paid for by special interests.

Well put. That is a balanced and realistic take. We do lack some gratitude, though democracy can never give us what Christ did. Which was distorted by church leader over centuries for own personal benefit. What we see now in Rssia breakes all moral, a deädly collusion between two who shouldn't match and work together: government|church. Rssia is becoming like a fanatic Mslim country, yet, proclaiming their _Faith is Christ_ as if that meant anything-or was even present, above their submission to an institution and money-washing “Orthodox“ church. That is what they actually pray to. It's sad. It's just so sad, nothing worse for a Christian to see than their corruption of the soul. And even thinking they are right. Now tell me about protesting in Russia?
"Police arrested a man for holding up a blank piece of white paper on Sunday in Novosibirsk, Russia. The police officers asked the protester to produce his documents, and after checking them said that 'all public activities on the territory of Novosibirsk region, including single-person pickets, in other words what, as I understand you are doing right now, are prohibited.' As the protester kept holding up the piece of white paper two police officers dragged him away. Good video. Really shows the concept of "democratic procrastination". With people saying things like "After this guy is gone it will be different.". It's nice that he hopes for that and all, but there is no such guarantee.
Authoritarian countries always have trouble with succession. A dictator who names a successor will be at a constant risk of being replaced by the political elite. Medvedev is the closest Putin ever came to naming a successor, and he rescinded that when he dissolved the entire cabinet in 2020. Medvedev is now deputy chairman of the security council. He is still one of the most likely successors of Putin and has a similar stance on democracy and the war against Ukraine.
Democracy doesn't materialize out of thin air. There is a cycle there that has to be broken.
Thank goodness that democracy doesn't materialize out of thin air, otherwise it would be a horrible world
Medvedev was a seat warmer. The likeliest successor is another KGB/FSB fella, like Patrushev
They admit there is no democracy.
It speaks volumes of just how secure and strong you are as a leader when you can't risk running elections against real opponents and you have to appoint complete idiots in high positions within your regime because you're afraid of a coup lead by someone with a brain and actual leadership skills.
This video gives me hope and despair all at the same time.

You cannot win a rigged election against a dictator who doesnt believe in democracy. But Russian people are brave and strong. They will find a way to free themselves. It has happened before. They still carry those genes, that passion for their country and its people. Believe in miracles. RIP Alexei.
It's all they know and will not change. They will always settle for safety. "Liberty or death" is not the russian way.
"But Russian people are brave and strong. They will find a way to free themselves. It has happened before. "
With all due respect: it has never happened during Russian history. Not even once.
And please, don't try to let me know about the fairy tale known as Great October Revolution. Firstly there was no revolution as described in Russian history books. , There was a soldiers and marines uprising. Then there was a successful coup d'état organized by small gang of Bolsheviks financed and armed by German Secret Service. They were even brought to Russian Border in German Train Wagon. Then there was a massacre of Soldiers and Marines who participated in Uprising. Followed by Mass Killing of old party members 20 years later in several purges and show trials, so no one would tell the true story of the so called Revolution.
You are right: Russian people are brave and strong. But during Russian history the oppressors were always stronger.
"They will find a way to free themselves. It has happened before." - Really? When? They went from czarist rule to soviet rule to Putin. I'm not sure Russians really want a free society. fun fact - in UK only approved parties and then only approved candidates get to stand in genertal elections. And there is essentially only 1 party. Just for context
Gorbachev and these "foreigners" managed to set Russia on the path of economic recovery and it's thanks to them the quality of life improved in the 2000s. One of the main problems of the Russian mentality is that they are seeking instant gratification and unable to connect the cause and effect if they are separated by more than a few years. This is even reflected in their fairy tales, such as «По щучьему веленью» («Емеля-дурак», «Сказка о Емеле-дурачке»). Putin reversed this in 2014 (or maybe actually in 2008) and decided to set Russia on the path of economic decline. You will be able to see the full scale of Putin's achievements in maybe about a decade.
