Hi Jeff, I wanted to take the time to write to thank for changing a lot of the things I do year over. I am 63 and since adopting some of the things you espouse, particularly hunting smarter vs harder. I manage about 235 acres in NJ in a very heavily hunted area. I went 8 years without harvesting a buck passing on lots of younger bucks holding out for an older deer. I have had 4 good years in a row harvesting 4 deer in the 130's. Much of that credit goes to you and your great videos.
    Thanks again!

Hey Jeff. As a hunter Im “late to the game”. Started at 30.
Dad died same year. He’d been disabled for many years. I picked up the old mans rifle and decided now was as good a time as any. A LOT of mistakes that first year, but got a buck the second year out on public land… with my dads gun! I just wanted to thank you for all the advice you put online, it truly helped me achieve my goal! Dad would have been proud. I like to think he was looking out for me.
    To everyone else:
    1. Don’t take for granted the opportunities you have to spend time with people you love.
    2. Good luck this season.

Started watching your videos this year and by far the best deer hunting and land management advice out there. As for you can’t kill them from the couch. Sense I have went to college 2 hrs from the private I hunt I have killed the largest deer ever killed on that property and my first bow buck. Definitely something to sitting less and waiting for high percentage days to be in the woods.

Really appreciate your analysis on all of your videos. Using the data and rethinking ideas, searching for fallacies in old-school wisdom and anecdotal evidence- all of that together can quickly provide a raw beginner like myself some real success. I’m still a raw beginner- but with meat in the freezer and a rack on the wall.

I'm come to think of how often to sit in a stand like "hit points" in a video game. Every stand has a certain number of hit points before it's burned out. You sit there once when conditions are right, it's 1 point off the tally. Sit there on a day with bad conditions, it might be 3-4 points off the tally. Make noise getting in or out, 2 more hit points gone.
Some stands though, are intentionally one-and-done; there's no way to get out without educating deer or once you make a track and recovery all the deer relocate, etc. They have 1 Hit point, so use it wisely...like those stands that touch the bucks' bedding areas...the ones on the hot late-season food source...

SOOO TRUE! We've watched a 6 pointer grow into a 10 over 5 years and because he chose areas to live that a stand couldn't be set up in, he has not been shot. Through the summer he would stand on one end of a 2 acre food plot while I was on the other. However, when he got pressured during season and got shot at during gun season he no longer exists! Some bucks are not so forgiving as he was, they will be gone before you even know they were there. Plan, plan, and plan some more, and do not hunt a stand with a mediocre wind during the rut thinking he won't care, because it may be the last time you ever see him. "They don't get big by being stupid!" So true it is.
Thank you again for all your knowledge and insight Jeff, it is truly priceless info every time you put out another video. Keep up the good work and good luck.

Man, I don't know about this. Maybe some national forest land in Georgia would be good to have some advice on. Also in my area of Georgia private land, they are all hunting. One place I hunted in the post was in a great funnel. The guy next door, literally 100 yards away shoots deer from his back porch while we are in the stand and we shoot deer he doesn't see, coming from the same direction. When you have hunters covering almost every 20 acres on public land, how does a stand not get burned out? Where im at, time in the woods kill deer.

But, I know what the neighbors are doing, not hunting smart and driving atvs to their stands etc, while my property is totally pressure free for an entire month. As long as the weather looks good, my first chance to sit is Halloween weekend and then the following ten days I have the availability to get out there. I believe sitting on the couch…or camping etc, might just prove to be a huge advantage for me.

Unless you have a massive piece of private land to hunt , you have to really be careful about overhunting. Public land that is huge definitely has an advantage when it comes to hunting everyday at a different area. you may....may have a bigger , older buck on private but quanity goes to public. I feel for the guys that only have small private to hunt. takes disipline to sit on the couch, lol. good content.

Hey Jeff love the knowledge you give in your vids, very straightforward and to the point. I'm still fairly new to deer hunting and had a question to ask that I'M sure you can answer.
I'm from East Tx and I personally don't hear you mention Tx much so I don't know how relitive my questions can be again still new lol. I watch a lot of your small parcel vids and try and learn and take your advice and tips on habitat improvements.
My family owns a little over 10 acre lot, on the back side is a creek that splits another 10 acres that had been vacant till about a few months ago, but now they have cleared it. Next to our property our next door neighbor owns close to 40 acres that backs into a very big forestry property that I know a lot of our deer come from. The whole area or neighborhood you can say is somewhat a spread out older suburban area I guess and like I mentioned before there's a creek that runs down and through all our properties.
I have a cpl question, its been at least 3 years now since we've owned the property nothing major has been done on it just some trails, but since were in season now if we were to do some clearing for trails and micro food plots should we wait after season or just do it anyways and just sacrifice this year. I'm really the only hunter and had no time to prep for this year but have a lot of free time now so i had been wanting to get out there and do some work while i have time.
Secondly i was told after talking to a buddy of mines since we have so many hogs that it's pointless to even do food plots even micro because they would just destroy them before they even become useful for the deer, and just stick to corn feeders. I wanted to know what you thought about that?
Thanks in advance, sorry for the long read..

While I agree with your points in general, I don't interpret the "can't kill them from the couch" statement to mean get out there and burn things out. You still gotta be smart, but I know plenty of "hunters" that will whine about not filling their tag (buck or doe) because they just don't have the fire to get off their backside and put in the effort. Keep the videos coming.

I had a doe and fawn come up to me yesterday. She was 30y when I saw her. She stomped her front feet all the way to the bottom of my stand. Then she saw me. 20’ high. Blew and ran. I wouldn’t have killed her anyway. But it was great to watch how protective she was.

Good content. Doe and fawn movement is much different in our forests as wolves are continuously moving them around. Almost impossible to pattern deer for more than a couple days.

Hi Jeff, I bought your seed and the deer are loving the peas and pulling the radishes out of the ground! My question is, if I spread the Fall Power Greens into standing buckwheat next year, will the peas get enough seed-to-soil contact when I crush the buckwheat over with a cultipacker? Thanks!

I don't own land, so food plots are out the question. I leave in the northeast and so the average Joe up for the most part hunt in government land. Its illegal in MA, CO and ME to hang up treestand in public land. So you have carry around with a climbers on your back. A lot of these public land have open trails for hikers and for this reason these deer become nocturnal. So around these parts, you can tried to applied those techniques but is very doubtful that it would work. I would say that deer hunting on public land is 90 percent luck. Now hunting on private land is another matter. Your chances are much greater in harvesting a deer. Going with an outfitter is a great idea but, who can afford it. I know I can't, I can't even afford a new bow much less an outfitter. Bow hunting is becoming a sport for the rich. That's all I have to say about that.

Definitely got within 40 yards of a group of doe hunting from the ground. The wind was fairly high, so I wasn't in a stand. I was focusing on the wind and their travel corridor.
Basically did everything Jeff said to do, and the deer cruised right past me without even knowing I was there. Unfortunately they were on the side of the travel corridor with too much brush and distance to make an ethical shot.
Next time! Jeff's hunting strategies work. Pretty awesome.

Could you possibly make a video for the guys that have to hunt in clubs and can’t really use these options when someone is constantly in the woods? I have been trying to use a lot of your strategies here in sc but im constricted to an area with people constantly in the stands you are trying to let sit. Not having my own land is hard to deal with but having to hunt somewhere with other people is even harder.

Have 1 stand under 30 white oaks next to cover that I only sit on a SW to S wind. I hunted a ground blind 10 times there and seen 12 different bucks last season. But I only hunted 2 morning and the rest from 9-2pm. Only winded by one because he basically stuck his head in the blind.

please give me a rate to drive to my Step Father's house in Missouri to convince him to stop hunting 60 days a season! I exclusively hunt in Wisconsin 400 miles away from the Missouri property i live near because he spooks every nice buck off our farm with hunting, atv use, layinig down sent, shooting does multiple days in a row etc etc. ITS FRUSTRATING. But my Wi property is getting better all the time thanks to WHS

Glad you think killing does is easy, I have had a bow for 16 years and have yet to take an animal with either my old 06 PSE Fire Flite 33 or newish Prime Black 3. Been out 4 times in different areas each time this fall and have only had a chance on the first evening hunt in the pouring rain 🌧 while sneaking through a creek. Pulled back on two at 25, but my peep was twisted sideways so I couldn’t shoot. 😢 Missed 3 does back in 2020, high and low all from the ground. Hopefully 🙏 I can get this rolling since I bought two additional archery 🏹 tags 🏷 in West Virginia and my PA license with an archery 🏹 stamp.

I can say I agree with the killing more and seeing more by staying home. Last year I sat 12times saw 8 2.5yr old or older bucks and killed 2. A 2.5 and one that was 6.5 at minimum(trail camera history). I’m on the same trend this year. 4 sits 3 bucks 2.5-4.5 yrs old and a couple smaller. This is all on public land in central Ny. Thanks for the great advice the last few years

Hey everyone here's a trick I've used for years that's always worked. When I start seeing bucks chasing hot does I know it's time to lay down a scent trail as best I can by keeping the the scent trail as undisturbed as possible from human scent.I buy a small fishing pole and will cast a scented wick of your favorite estrous or buck lure and reel in to my good shooting areas..I have only seen small bucks early chasing but it's been to warm here in KY.Behid our Property was 600 acres free range.Nowv that someone just purchased the property and have been logging it.When I log into my camera from inside the house I would have 10-15 bucks and 20 doe or smaller deer in my are daily, the logging has really screwed up the pattern.I have a big 10 coming into a scrape around 8pm every night.I had a massive 14-15:pointer coming in but he hasn't been seen in weeks.I only hunt strange and inconsistent times.Sometimes I'll do morning some evening, and some mid day.Never more that twice a week.I had 6 does and a small buck under my stand, they were so calm and had no idea I was there.Trying to wait for a decent buck but My patience is my best strategy.
