A big difference was that the italians, particularly in the high Renaissance often painted nude figures, many times of pagan subjects. Neither was common in the north.
Thank you - the Italians are most commonly referred to when discussing the Renaissance in art, but we tend to forget that artists in the north of Europe were doing some marvelous work, as well. I'm always so happy to see your posts. :)
Thank you! I love both periods, but the Italians do tend to get all the glory. I wanted to show that one was not better than the other, simply that they were inspired to represent art in a new way.
I'm sorry but religious paintings were just as popular in the Italian Renaissance before the Renaissance, during the Renaissance, and after the Renaissance and this carried over to the Baroque period which was the result of the Catholic Counter-Reformation.
yeah exactly; if anything Protestantism caused a huge trend of iconoclasm ( destruction of religious imagery). I don't think this is an accurate comparison
The Italian intrest in classical art lead to Italian artists of the period painting pagan mythological images. Titian ,Agnolo Bronzino, Pontormo, Bandinelli, Corregio, Caravaggio, all used pagan subjects, usually nude.

I didn't mean to imply that they weren't. Just that they were two popular themes in each area. Religious art is popular throughout art history.
