For better effect, the dark red should go over the pink, and the pink over the blue. In other words, string the dark red as you did, then start stringing the pink under the red, until complete, and then string the blue starting under the pink. I just saw this question and notice it wasn't aswered. It's 3 years old, but for what it's worth, a can of air my do the trick in getting dust out without damaging the strings. Also, the static of a cleaning rod might also help to draw the dust. Anyway, hope this is helpful, if 3 years from when you asked (LOL).
