Anne Schwanewilms produces a truly miraculous phrase at the close of Act I of Der Rosenkavalier - "Da drin ist die silberne Ros'n". She is one of my favourite Strauss interpreters: her beautiful silvery timbre, yet myriad vocal colours, and excellent diction. The often disconnected registers she makes work for her somehow, it's a very particular approach.
I have heard her before on u tube concert recital. I fell in love with Lieder when I was 17 in the concert choir. Once I heard Dame Janet Bakers voice I knew I was listening to GREATNESS 👑💙. We were singing Vivaldis Gloria & Pergolisis Magnificat. Our Choir Master Mr. Welch was very good in teaching us how to sing correctly etc. I find this lady's voice limited yet engaging. This particular scene is very emotive & her facial expressions are so telling & true to the story etc. Thank you for the post. This Rosen is blocked in the U.S. Take care. Arnold
IMO she is the finest Marschallin of the past decade and one of the most "complete" I've ever seen. Only Crespin and Reining capture all the disparate facets of the role as ideally balanced. It's also her best operatic role by a long shot. Generally she has impressed me more in recital, where she is remarkable, than in opera where a lot of what she sings challenges her voice somewhat. But she is very special.
Agreed, very likely her best role, and also that she is wonderful in lieder recitals. Best Marschallin of last decade agreed on that front too - Fleming’s last great Marschallin were in 09 when the voice was still in great condition. Fleming is captured wonderfully on film in the role in Baden Baden that year (not so much in the Met one a year later or the more recent farewell ones both of which she was past prime) on this channel I have several clips of Fleming from the 97 Paris production, simply stupendous.
@@greatmomentsofopera7170 Fleming is weirdly not my favorite in Strauss as ostensibly ideal as she in. I think it comes almost to easily for her in some ways. My favorite of her Strauss roles is the Grafin and the Daphne she did in concert.

I have to cry every time when this “Rose” is coming.🙏

Thanks for your comment!
Lovely
In what year did this take place?
2007 (November), Tokyo.
The singing is gorgeous and somewhat wonderfully intimate, but my God, is the orchestra/conduction an absolute disappointment. ://
Not the best ever, but not terrible? Or which bit specifically?
