Going out of such a game saying "we were the best team" is the best way to have it happen again next time. Canadian players and coach underestimated France as you guys still do, even after watching that game. Forget about last year's world cup, and look at French results in FIBA tournaments in the last 12-15 years. Olympics 2021 Silver / Euro 2011 Silver / Euro 2013 Gold / Euro 2015 Bronze / Euro 2022 Silver / World Cup 2014 Bronze / World Cup 2019 Bronze. And those medals were sometimes won against teams that were honestly better than the current Canadian roster (Spain was a monster during the same 15 years period). Even in a 7-FIBA game series, I wouldn't bet money on Canada, that has no real front court to handle big men with FIBA rules, especially in front of a French home crowd. And even if France hadn't beat them in QF, I don't see how they would have won against Germany (a very solid team with very strong centers) or Serbia (with the best center of the tournament).
Not to throw more salt on the wound, but it's not just another 4 years; we've been waiting almost 15 years. This vision of competing in Olympic basketball started when Thompson, Bennett, and Wiggins got drafted in the lottery.
Rowan Barrett should have sent an all NBA Team to Paris. He seemingly held grudges against Chris Boucher and Cory Joseph. Dalano Banton, Tristan Thompson, Olivier-Maxence Prosper or Brandon Clarke would have made a nice roster addition over Melvin Ejim and Khem Birch as well.
Needed a day to process the loss 😢 Enjoyed your post mortem & personally still remain optimistic for the future especially if they add Mathurin, Sharpe, Edey & Clarke.
Great discussion! I was really interested in the segment on naturalized players. Most naturalized spots usually go to foreign players that have played in that country for a few seasons. So I agree on the point that if Canada did go that route, it should be for someone that probably has connections to Canada or is a long time Raptor. Pascal would have been perfect for the job, but him being traded to Indiana might blur that connection. Team USA has had years where they had guys like Miles Plumlee and Javale McGee in FIBA tournaments. So them recruiting Embiid was their way of trying to fill that big man role. We obviously don’t need to do something that drastic, but I’m open to naturalizing under the right conditions.
Most will scoff at the AmeriCup but Argentina, Brazil will be at full strength and Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico will have very strong teams. I think to keep the momentum going we need to field a competitive development team at that tournament. Players like Edey, Nembhard, Leonard, Mathurin, Sharpe, Banton, Kabengele, Houstan, Darling, Wigginton, Omoyuri, O-Max, Lawson in big roles can build experience for the world cup and Olympics. The European teams have the Eurobasket which is treated as seriously as the world cup or Olympics by the European teams which allows their players to get high stakes experience to carry forward. We need to be building that development through these tournaments rather than sending Usports/ CEBL teams to the AmeriCup.
We went into this Olympics undersized on the front court. Eventually, we were going to get bullied by more balanced teams like Serbia and Germany. Let's look at how we solve the front court going forward.
they don't have a canadian big in the euroleague with some size and experience? Having NBA players is not worth much if they are young or inexperienced.
Given that we haven’t made the Olympics in 24 years, expecting a medal to be foregone conclusion was kinda crazy. They need to continue building this program.
Not if you looked at the available players for Rowan Barrett to build a roster with. Melvin Ejim and Khem Birch, who are good people, had no business on a roster seeking to medal in Paris. Should have added two of the following available players: Chris Boucher, Dalano Banton, Cory Joseph, Brandon Clarke, Tristan Thompson or Olivier-Maxence Prosper. Cory Joseph's veteran point guard presence could have been huge in calming the team down early in the France game. Chris Boucher could have added rim protection, 3pt shooting and athleticism in the frontcourt. Dalano Banto is a 6'7 scoring point guard. Oh, well until 2028...
Tristan said on Road Trippin podcast that he wanted to play but there was process that FIBA wanted him to go through due to the substance ban issue he had in the NBA. I don't know if he is telling the truth but that's what he said.
love this channel overall but some bad takes here. Notably, "who's second option on this team"?? Clearly It was RJ and yes RJ can create for himself. The lack of respect for RJ is just ridiculous. RJ grew up playing Fiba and dominated. 38 points in the U19 tournament in 2017 against team USA. He also put up 22.6pt 7.6reb 4.3ast at duke.and was option 1a /1b with Zion Williamson. Adding Mathurin, Sharpe, and a healthy Jamal Murrary will give this team plenty of scoring. Brandon Clarke, Kabengele are still young and hopefully will join us in future competition. Zach Edey will hopefully become a quality starter in the NBA by the next olympics. Future looks bright and hopefully we actually include more of our best players going forward.
@@AnthonyBrown-ku5xl He may be a bit too old by the time next olympics come around. He would have been more helpful than lytes and Kelly O this time around. At least he brings hustle and always energize the team.
I was rooting for Canada right behind USA. Wanted us to face you but French had come cooked called against you guys and Japan. But man was it sweet to see Curry cook the home team. 😂
I have said it in multiple posts, but I hope whatever is happening with Jamal that he gets better before the NBA season starts. The tentativeness and lack of burst was definitely an issue. Also, I am just wondering if he just couldn't adjust to the FIBA contact rules. And Jordi, sticking with him was a question mark. I understand the loyalty and 'hoping' that he turns it around , but after Group stage you gotta sit him at some point. Libaan, not setting Jamal up for success? Team gave him lots of 'rope', ramped him up slowly most likely as per his request. Yes, our size down the middle was an issue, but we knew that going in and handled that in Group stage well. Still, proud of our Team and look forward to our future success.
Good, balanced postmortem on team Canada, guys. I despise all the hate on Murray. Sure, he wasn't at his best but the coach couldn't leave him out of the roster. Perhaps the only thing Fernandez could have done differently was call a timeout earlier in the first quarter against France. Canada was just overhyped by the media. Maybe this comes from that NBA high-brow attitude when it comes to international basketball. Canada just don't have the personnel to overcome uncontrollable obstacles if things in the game are not going their way. As for naturalization, I would be all for it for a player from the CEBL, but a player from there might not be an impact player at the jnternational level. By the way, the loss against France in 2000 and definitely the one against Venezuela in 2015 was worse than this.
I’m thinking Chris Boucher and Tristan Thompson would have made a difference. For 2028 Maxwell Prosper and Leonard Miller are bigger 3/4s who could help. Zack Edey for sure is needed. I’m glad I’m not the only person mourning the loss.
Those guys are deluded. There is a biais here. They take for granted that the NBA is the alpha and omega of basketball. Nobody in France has ever considered Canada as a dangerous team. Everybody here expected france to win that match and this is exactly what happened.
He did it 2 consecutive buckets in the 1Q and I was optimistic that it would have been his day. The red flag for me was when he turned the ball over & ran back and try to stop a transition basket and fouled Wemby that they called unsportmanslike which imo opinion was not warranted. At that point Jordi should have brnched him & played Nehmbard more b/c he was a big factor as to why we won vs Spain. I thought Jordi iced Nembhard out of this gm. Yabusele, Lessor or not NBA calibre. Those calls they got would have been deemed offensive fls in the NBA.
Murray is one of those players who makes every shot hard because he relies on his athleticism like he literally can’t just do a normal shot. With some outside luck in who they were grouped with, and then faced in a one and done, the cards could have fallen more favorably and could just as easily won Bronze and even silver.
“Their best players didn’t deliver outside of Shai,” what a blasphemous comment to throw shade at RJ. Will you need to start standing up for RJ when you hear that. RJ did show up, every damn game. And he’s their 2nd best player hands down.
Jamal Murray out of shape and did not fit besides not playing well. Andrew Nembhard and Shai best Backcourt. Dillon Brooks and Lu Dort FIBA Wings just need a Centre. RJ Barrett perfect extra Wing/Guard. What's missing is a Centre. Remains to be seen if Edey becomes a viable pro at 7'4"?
Absolute failure not medalling. But I question the coaching and overall the choices of players. Murray. Did not fit the whole fucking time and he never fit. I know he’s hurt but why did he play the whole game what justified that?? This is a guy who’s whole game is based on his athleticism like every shot is a fade etc this team needed a PG and missed C Joseph perhaps
Pre Olympics Rowan Barrett was acting all snug - really smelling himself in the Team Canada presser when talking about all the players now wanting to join the program for Paris 2024. Rowan Barrett held personal grudges against certain players over sending the best available roster to Paris. Rowan Barrett lacks the killer instinct needed to lead the program, acting like this is a participation league instead of the Olympics - where you take your 12 best players available to participate. Rowan Barrett didn't even try to naturalize a player even though center was the weak spot on the roster. Jacob Poeltl could have been a nice addition as a potential naturalized player. Team USA recruited Cameroonian Joel Embiid who Team France was hoping for as well. Then when the training camp invite list was made public Rowan Barrett had all sorts of players that shouldn't have been in training camp like Thomas Scrubb, Phil Scrubb, Mfiondu Kabengele, Trae Bell-Haynes and Kyle Alexander. Rowan Barrett should have assembled an all NBA roster for training camp and Paris even without Andrew Wiggins, O'shae Brissett (left camp early), Leonard Miller (left camp early), Benedict Mathurin, Shaedon Sharpe and Zach Edey being unavailable for various reasons. No reason for Melvin Ejim or Khem Birch to be on the final roster. Chris Boucher and Dalano Banton would have been much better overall for the team's depth. Cory Joseph could have been the veteran point guard presence needed to steady the team in a game like the quarterfinal against France. Brandon Clarke, Tristan Thompson or Olivier-Maxence Prosper could have given the team some more inside toughness. Coming back medal-less is a shame on Rowan Barrett who ran the program like a YMCA participation league. It's like Rowan Barrett brought a knife to a gun fight. Rowan Barrett not using the FIBA Olympic team building rules to their fullest capabilities instead relying on some self regulating archaic participation regulation was very shortsighted on his behalf and cost Team Canada a medal. Bring back Steve Nash to run the program and let's send the 12 best available players using all of the available rules and regulations to our advantage in building a roster to send to the next Olympics!! 2028... now what awaits?
@@AndOreos Jacob Poeltl would have been better than anyone who Team Canada had playing center in Paris. He is big, tough, can rebound, rim protect and is a legit 7 feet tall barefoot. In case you have forgotten, Sam Dalembert was naturalized by Team Canada in 2007 in a sped up process in order to play in the World Cup.
@@AndOreos You really have no idea because the particulars haven't even been presented to either party to see if there is mutual interest. Sam Dalembert was a Haitian citizen when he was naturalized in 2007.

Jakob poetl. 😂 you don’t know what you are talking about
@@AndOreos Jacob Poeltl would have been better than anyone who Team Canada had playing center in Paris. He is big, tough, can rebound, rim protect and is a legit 7 feet tall barefoot. In case you have forgotten, Sam Dalembert was naturalized by Team Canada in 2007 in a sped up process in order to play in the World Cup.
@@IceManLikeGervin poeltl wont ever be allowed to play for Canada. dalembert is part Canadian.
@@AndOreos You really have no idea because the particulars haven't even been presented to either party to see if there is mutual interest. Sam Dalembert was a Haitian citizen when he was naturalized in 2007.
@@IceManLikeGervin his father or mother is Canadian. there is a link. poetl has no connection, maybe its possible but its way out of bounds.
Get the best available players for 2028 ! Where was Chris Bouche. Tell me he wasn't better than the players that didn't do squat !
