    I don't comment or review online. But I have to in this case. I run Dali Rubicon 6's on Hegel H390 in a 450 sq. ft. dedicated music room. I listen to classical, jazz, rock and trance. My local dealer has allowed me to test several subwoofers. I tested two Dali's, two Bowers & Wilkins, two SVS's and one Klipsch. I paid per hour for a very inclined expert to deliver and help set up each of these for testing. Since my local dealer does not carry REL, I ordered a T9X and an S/510 to compare. Both of the REL's were significantly better than the rest, despite the price premium on Bower's and Wilkins and one SVS I tested. The expert from the local dealer agreed. The speed and the control are stunning on both REL's. Both had plenty of head room. I was surprised at the clear difference in every aspect. We are constantly bombarded with advertising that can make every product appear to be the best. REL is one of the rare companies who's founder and experts have spent their lives designing and producing products that are pre-eminent. I actually kept the T9X rather than the S/510. It's that good! John Hunter is obviously doing this out of passion and his success is well deserved. Congratulations REL, and thank you!

    I have a Marantz Cinema 60, the new REL T7X comes in tomorrow. I was concerned about using an RCA cable due to audio latency. So in my case (for now), Single Sub, 3.1 system (L,C,R). So would I be hooking up the Red to right positive terminal, Yellow to left positive terminal, then black to ground? Thank you!

    • @RELAcoustics
      @RELAcoustics  3 місяці тому +1

      Thank you for reaching out. With a single T/7x, you are correct that the red wire can be connected to the right channel speakers' positive output terminal, the yellow wire to the left channel speakers' positive output terminal, and the black wire to a ground screw or chassis screw. You could then also run a basic RCA cable from the .1/LFE input on the subwoofer to the subwoofer output jack on the Cinema 60.

    I like my stereo T-5i REL's (and their cables) and my main speakers (and their cables) equidistant from each other - FROM the amplifier. This way each of the 4 runs is super close to each other in length, and bass support arrives (in time) with my main speakers- especially with the fact I own Magneplanar 1.7i's, where speed is key and the panels demand a quicker response time, imo. I feel time alignment is important here. I WILL try this arrangement this weekend to see if a greater soundspace is created with these 2 in-stereo connected subs, FROM my speakers only. Great tip though... can't hurt to try.

      @@backrack01 Worse- I found that there was too much loss from the Maggies to the REL's. Sensitivity issues? But I moved them closer which wasn't bad. I think connector size might be the issue- I used bananas for the subs into the maggies, but it could be a question of bare wire for the subs and different cabling for the speakers. Closer to the speaker is key at all times tho, at the plane of the speaker or right behind. Upgraded to T-7x's a pair.

    • @TheGlotz69

      Worse. I moved up to the 7x's, but perhaps it was a connector issue as subs were louder, but challenging the low sensitivity speakers for share of the sound. Key to have them close- mine are right behind. I could see with bare wires or a change of speaker cabling could change that outcome.

    I am not sure if that is the right advice, the voltage drops at peaks when bass is the strongest, you want the sub to make up for those drops, hence I think its better wiring the high level in near the amp.

    • @RELAcoustics
      @RELAcoustics  4 дні тому

      Three subwoofers is the minimum number to form a true REL-3D system, though some customers will use an individual subwoofer assigned to each main speaker channel. Meaning in a 5.1 surround system they would use five High Level connected subwoofers, or in a 7.2 surround system they would use seven High Level connected subwoofers. It's up to you how far you want to expand your system past the first three units (front left and right, center, and rear left and right).

    If I’m going to use Marantz amp10 with bi-amping the two front speakers, would that make any difference if connecting high level cable? The wiring itself doesn’t change on the amplifier end (red and yellow to L+ from sub1 and to R+ from sub2). The only thing is on the marant there is a selector for normal, bi-amp and btl). So would having it on bi-amp mode affect the wiring for the rels?

If you are bi-amping your main loudspeakers with the Marantz Amp10 then the wiring of each REL's High Level cable will remain the same, except that we recommend connecting the High Level cable to the outputs on the amplifier which are feeding the low-frequency drivers for your main loudspeakers.

    Hi John there is a guy on another UA-cam channel that believes that high level connection proposed by REL is the wrong way to go. What is proposing is to add an external active crossover and split the frequencies between the main speakers and the subs. I just hooked up my High level connectors of my 2 Rel T9i directly to my speakers and I am very satisfied with the REL solution. Your thought please

    • @RELAcoustics

      Thank you for reaching out. As long as the High Level cable is connected correctly depending on the type of amplifier that you are using (Class A/B, Class D, etc.) then there will be no risk of damage to the subwoofer by connecting using the High Level input. In our experience using the High Level connection results in significantly improved performance from REL subwoofers, though our subs can also be connected using a more conventional RCA connection if you prefer.

      Thank you for reaching out. When connecting using the High Level input there will be no wires making contact with more than one amplifier terminal at a time. One wire will connect directly to one positive binding post, a second wire to the other positive binding post, and a third wire connected to a ground point. I’ve gained some additional speaker wire and was going to bi-wire from each monobloc (which has the additional speaker output posts for bi-wiring) to the LF and HF binding posts on the speakers. Thank you for reaching out. If you will be bi-wiring your main loudspeakers from the same set of monoblock power amplifiers, rather than bi-amping the speakers, then your High Level connections for the pair of REL subwoofers will remain the same. Theoretically it would be best to connect the High Level cables to the set of output terminals that are powering the low-frequency drivers on your speakers, though realistically both sets of output terminals on the amp are sending the exact same signal to your speakers so you could connect the High Level cable to either and get the same result.

    Not sure I understood the last part about connecting a single REL to the speaker terminals. John said that an extension cable would be necessary for the speaker further away from the REL but the video was showing that the red and yellow REL wires are twisted together and connected to the same speaker. Maybe the footage is referring to a stereo pair of RELs and showing how to connect 1 REL to 1 speaker?
    Since bass is usually not different between left and right channel, can’t I just use this connection method even if I only have 1 REL and avoid the extension cable to the other speaker?

      The bass freq isn't always balanced LR equally in all recordings. And if you crossover into higher frequencies, say 100Hz, you'll likely have even more localized independent (stereo) information, hence the concept of a stereo pair of subs.
      I'm running my pair this way now, but would like to try dual mono as I'm battling room issues that may be solved by summing the signal to both subs.
      In the ideal world, it seems that a stereo pair are ideal, if you think of the subs as extensions to your mains, making them true full range speakers.
      As other videos have pointed out, there are recordings that have stereo bass, and there can also be spatial information conveyed in the lower freq, so could have sound stage benefits to running a LR sub pair.
      That's what I've picked up so far. I still need to measure my system and room with a mic, and determine if I'll continue with the stereo pair, or switch to dual mono. Additionally, I may eventually try minidsp for integrating the subs. This would mean bypassing the high level connection in favor of the LFE input, and then configure minidsp to set crossover, phase, and time delay to lock it in even tighter with my mains.

    • @RELAcoustics
      @RELAcoustics  2 роки тому +3

      Thank you for reaching out. As you noted sub-bass content is often centered in the stereo mix, meaning that it is common between the right and left channel, and as a result it is possible to connect a single subwoofer to one of either the right or left channel speaker and still get good results. This is not the most ideal option, since you will be missing low-frequency from the other speaker channel and some recordings do have stereo separation in the low-frequency range, though it can be done if you are using a single subwoofer in your system. That being said, with a single subwoofer setup it is typically more ideal to connect the High Level cable to the output terminals on your amplifier, so that the sub can receive signal from both the right and left channels.

      I wasn’t sure either. I have 2 T Zeros and each is wired to my front pair of MA Radius 90s which are fed by expensive Chord Rumour 2 cables. The wiring is as described on the REL site. The critical step was to tune each REL separately then when turning both on, reduce the volume by about 3 clicks.
      On the bass mono v stereo thing, I believe that all vinyl has mono bass below about 60hz. However, the master tapes do not. This is why CDs and MQA streaming appears to be more directional in bass. Big scale recordings using mics such as symphony or organ music shows this.

    If you have bridged power amplifiers that provide a balanced differential output, why would that cause any damage? Maybe because the high level inputs to the subs have one side connected to ground.

    • @RELAcoustics
      @RELAcoustics  2 роки тому +1

      With a traditional Class A/B amplifier the negative output terminal/binding post references to ground, which means that the the subwoofer can be grounded if needed through it's black High Level wire to the negative output terminal or the negative binding post on the main loudspeakers. With a balanced/differential amplifier, the negative output terminals carry a positive voltage rather than referencing to ground. This means that if you connect the High Level cable to the binding posts on your speaker and experience a ground hum from the subwoofer there will be no way to achieve a ground connection through the High Level cable's black wire. As a result, with balanced/differential or Class D amplifiers it is typically best to connect the High Level cable to the amplifier's output terminals, so that a ground connection can be achieved if needed.

      Thank you for reaching out. The Sony STR-DH190 is a Class A/B amplifier, which means that the black wire of the High Level cable can be connected to a negative binding post on one of either the left channel or right channel speaker. The red wire of the High Level cable will then connect to the positive binding post on the right channel speaker, and the yellow wire will connect to the positive binding post on the left channel speaker.
      With a single subwoofer, it will also likely be necessary to trim-back some of the black outer sheathing on the cable so that the individual wires can reach both your left channel and right channel speaker.

Or connect the coloured wires as normal leaving the "Black" wire off and connecting 2 standard RCA cables coming from each left and right's sub .1/LFE channel to an open RCA port on the back of the Lyngdorf unit), then you tune each sub by ear using the crossovers on the back of the subs (not the Lyngdorf software, that only would control the stereo speaker pair and subs would be turned "off" in Lyngdorf Room Perfect setup).

      Thank you for reaching out. Unfortunately we do not have a video about specifically connecting High Level to Lyngdorf balanced/differential amplifiers, though the instructions that you described are correct for connecting High Level to this type of amplifier. Specifically, as long as you do not connect the black wire of the High Level cable to a negative speaker terminal on the amplifier then there will be no risk of damaging the REL subwoofer or the Lyngdorf amplifier. For more information, here is a link to our video about connecting High Level to balanced/differential amplifiers: ua-cam.com/video/jDoY5sVT0XQ/v-deo.html
      We can look into collaborating with Lyngdorf to provide High Level connection instructions specific to their amplifiers, though as you noted Lyngdorf generally recommends against connecting High Level since it is possible to damage the amp or subwoofer if you do not follow the correct connection instructions. However, as long as you follow the connections outlined in the above link then there will be no risk of damage to the sub or the amplifier. If in doubt, you can always revert to using the Low Level input on your S/812, which would connect to the RCA preamp outputs on the TDAI-3400.

      If you are using a Class A/B amplifier in your system then the black High Level wire can be connected to the negative binding post on either the left or right channel speaker. However, for a single subwoofer setup it is typically easier to connect the High Level cable to the output terminals on your amplifier, rather than to the speakers, so that you can more easily connect to both the left and right stereo channels.

In this video you explained that we could connect a single sub to the speakers instead of the amplifier. 1. So I should be able to connect the single REL sub to the Martin Logan Speakers provided that I use an extension to the speaker that further from the sub? 2. What is the difference between connecting it straight to to the mono blocks rather than the speakers, because the speakers are still getting the output from the mono blocks? 3. If the mono blocks have an grounding screw bu design should I be able to connect the sub direct to mono blocks ? .......................... Thanks in advance

    • @RELAcoustics
      @RELAcoustics  Рік тому +1

      Thank you for reaching out. Since you are using monoblock power amplifiers in this system it will be necessary to use a stereo pair of subwoofers in order to take advantage of the High Level input. In our experience connecting a single subwoofer High Level to two monoblocks at the same time will often result in a significant ground loop hum that can be near-impossible to eliminate, and in a worst-case-scenario can result in damage to the subwoofer and/or the amplifier. In addition, since your PS Audio M1200 monoblocks are class D amplifiers it will be best to connect the High Level cables for a pair of REL subwoofers to the output terminals on the amplifiers, rather than to the speaker's binding posts, so that a ground connection can be achieved if needed.
      If it is only possible to add a single subwoofer to your system at this time then we recommend connecting it to open outputs on your system's preamp, using the Low Level input on the REL.

If I connect the low level cable to one of the channel I will be getting mono signal from one of the channels. Is there a recommendation on which channel it should be Left or Right?
      Not sure if this is a silly question . Can I use stereo to mono converter and use that to pass the signal to subwoofer in that way I can the signal s from both the channels. Will this increase the subwoofer to produce better sound than using one connection from one of the channels ? Apologies for asking more questions.

      @RELAcoustics  Рік тому +1

      @@senerathw Thank you for your response. Using the High Level input does offer improved performance from our subwoofers when possible to do so, though in your case it will be best to connect your REL using it's Low Level input to your preamp, so that it can safely receive both left channel and right channel signal.
      If your preamp has a mono subwoofer output jack, then you can use a single standard RCA-to-RCA cable for connecting to the REL's Low Level input. If your preamp has stereo outputs, then you can use an RCA y-cable so that both of these outputs can be connected in to the subwoofer's Low Level input.

    How do you compensate for the delays of the electronics in the REL? This gonna be a filter, and then there’s can be an amplifier. I heard that older RELs have something like 23 ms of delay. I heard that new RELs have something closer to 13 ms of delay. So if you were to have a processor that can delay your main speakers from the sub pre-out, then you can truly time align your subwoofer and your mains. Hooking the subwoofer up to the high-level means that you will always have a small delay in the system, and they won’t actually be in phase. It may work fine for sustained low notes, but I don’t see how it helps the transients.

    • @RELAcoustics
      @RELAcoustics  2 роки тому +5

      Thank you for watching. All current REL subwoofer models have at most 8ms of filter delay, with our Reference models having only 4ms of filter delay. This delay is so short that it is inaudible and imperceptible to the human ear, which allows the subwoofer to be time aligned with the main loudspeakers when using either the High Level or line level inputs.

If you are using a single subwoofer then we recommend connecting it's High Level cable to the output terminals on the amp itself so that it can more easily draw signal from both the left and right channels. If you are using a pair of subwoofers, then you have the option of either connecting the High Level cable to the amplifier's output terminals or to the binding posts on the corresponding main loudspeaker.

    Is it OK to connect the rel to naim nap 300dr amp .

    • @RELAcoustics
      @RELAcoustics  2 роки тому +1

      Thank you for reaching out. It is possible to connect a REL subwoofer to the Naim NAP 300DR using the High Level input, though due to the output stage design of this amp it is not possible to make this connection using the standard High Level cable which is supplied with the subwoofer. Instead, we recommend using the Naim version of our Bassline Blue cable, which is built with additional resistance added to the cable which allows it to safely be connected directly to the NAP 300DR's output terminals. Alternatively, you could use the stock High Level cable and connect to the binding posts on the main loudspeakers, rather than to the amplifier's output terminals, though this is usually easiest when using a stereo pair of subwoofers.
      For more information on connecting High Level to Naim amplifiers, feel free to write in to contactus@rel.net and we will be happy to assist.

      @@hawkmoon369 The following connections can be used when wiring a stereo pair of S/812 to your Naim NAP-300R using the Naim Bassline Blue cable:
      - Connect both the red and yellow wires of the right channel subwoofer's High Level cable to the right channel positive output terminal on the amplifier.
      - Connect the black wire of the right channel subwoofer's High Level cable to the right channel negative output terminal.
      - Connect both the red and yellow wires of the left channel subwoofer's High Level cable to the left channel positive output terminal on the amplifier.
      - Connect the black wire of the left channel subwoofer's High Level cable to the left channel negative output terminal.

    So in regard to the caveat you mention with the balanced differential operation….. I have an Audio research ref 75se and a stereo pair of S510’s. Am I in the “no-go” camp of not being able to try this setup of connecting to the speakers instead? Thanks.

      Thank you for reaching out. Unfortunately, with the Audio Research REF-75se we do not recommend connecting the High Level cables to the binding posts on your main loudspeakers. With this amplifier it will be best to connect the High Level cable to the amplifier's output terminals.
