- As Russia's war on Ukraine rages on, it stands to gain trillions of dollars in mineral and resources if it takes over the country - or even just hangs on to territory it has seized so far. Ukraine has huge deposits of lithium, in particular, a key mineral for batteries powering electric cars or smartphones.

Is this the great mineral opportunity Lindsey Graham was talking about?
US Senator Lindsey Graham says Ukraine is a "gold mine" with $12 trillion worth of critical minerals, which the West "can't afford to lose".

That's because the topic is hot. Look what is happening around the Serbian lithium political aspect. In Serbia, lithium has become a divisive topic. Citizens, environmental activists, and green political parties stand on one side. On the other stands a major company supported by Serbia’s ruling parties and certain political forces from within the EU. Polarisation between supporters and opponents of lithium extraction has made genuine debate impossible. China is number 6 on the list of top 6 countries with lithium and they have 4.5 million tonnes. So Ukraine doesn't have enough to bother with.
For a moment i thought America was wasting money on Ukraine over wheat 🌾 but now with this news it makes sense its is about the trillions in natural resources
Europe cares about Gas and Oil. Not Lithium in Ukraine.
Lithium is being replaced by sodium, which is abundant in the oceans. The global lithium market is relatively small compared to the cost of war. For instance, Albemarle Corporation, the largest lithium company, has a market cap of $14 billion, much less than the cost of the ongoing conflict. It's clear that economic factors don't support the idea of a war for lithium.
What you are arguing here is that everyone love rocks cos people depended on them for stone tools... problem is the stone age did not end due to a global shortage of rock! Well the lithium age is ending, and nobody will put money into lithium from here on, its surplus to requirements.
Total traded value of Lithium this year globally is will be 29 billion. at this rate, and it going to die out, it would take 34 years to be one trillion assuming the entire global supply of lithium was in Ukraine... and guess what? Its not! That 29 billion is about the cost of Russia's war for three months. Also if Russia ever want those sanctions lifted their bill WILL BE in the low trillions. Or if they prefer they can hobble along like North Korea for the rest of the century.
Russia and the US export Billions of US dollars in wheat. In 2023 Russia exported about 3 time more wheat. Lithium is everywhere. It takes years to setup the permitting and infrastructure to mine it. I don't see wheat or lithium being at issue.
