My parents are divorce and I'm not gonna lie this scene would've probably made me break down in tears when I was little, but I still very much advocate for it to be released.

Not everything is made for children. This banned episode is depressing but shouldn't have been banned. But shouldn't have been shown to young children either. A DVD release would be interesting to see so maybe when kids get old enough parents can sit down with their children to explain episode, which definitely should not be shown on television when there's no parent.

i see what you mean, but i think a scene like this was more intended to be directed towards the children who are actively struggling through such a change, intending to give them an outlet to feel seen and heard. both sesame street and mr rogers had effective sad/uncomfortable moments; they always intended to be informative or a way to bring catharsis to the children who are experiencing these things without much guidance/support from adults. sesame street once had an episode all about big bird needing to feel believed, made after a large jump in csa cases were coming out at the time. the creators know that children need to feel understood too just like anyone else, and don't get the credit they deserve when it comes to being able to handle heavy topics when handled respectfully. sesame street and mr rogers both did a fantastic job never talking down to their audience or shying away from topics that couldve been important for children to hear. ie, mr hooper or mr roger's episode on divorce.
children deserve to learn too, its better to teach them topics like this that could affect them or one of their friends, rather than avoid heavy topics and possibly leave them feeling more lost later because of it. though, i think for this particular segment i can see general audiences feeling it may have just been too on the nose.

Correction: not everything is made for every age of childhood. But you can usually introduce good things to older kids with relative ease.

That's why I like Sesame Street. They teach children life as it is, in the most tender way. These situations happen in real life, even if we don't want it to be that way. But many children live it…

Thank you for posting. I remember reading about this episode several years ago. It’s an important concept but this scene did not execute it well. Their dad didn’t even say he loved them when he left. I can see how it confused the test audience children.

It’s definitely an interesting piece to kind of finally get a peek at. I agree that it definitely wasn’t one of Sesame Street’s best moments but not because of the idea itself because it’s definitely something important to talk about for some kids. I guess the way it was handled just didn’t really cut it for me

I didn’t see much of Sesame Street as a child (oh I definitely did now and then I vaguely remember that much) even though I saw a lot of the other Jim Henson shows. But I my parents did get divorced in 95. And being older than the children in those test screenings would have been I am still remembering what that was like at the time this brought some of sadness and confusion at the time but some of the positives too (many positive memories from that time spent with either parent in the way that clip ended too.) So I think it looks like it was handled as well as it was ever going to be but maybe there just wasn’t a right way to do it considering the end results (not counting covering divorce in the past tense which I know that they have done successfully.)
It’s just one persons opinion after all, it’s only the one scene I’m basing this on after all. Sesame Street should be commended for trying these difficult real world subjects in the mostly successful ways that they have.

I can tell how confusing this segment is. I just want the topic of divorce to be something that all kids can remember of all ages even if these kids are from broken families. My mom had been through a divorce before I was born she had 2 children in that marriage then she got remarried to my dad and had my brother and me. On top of that, there are other shows for kids who explained the topic a little better.

The last ten episodes of Little Muppet Monsters also had the same factor of being unaired and was intended to be aired in October-December 1985. But it's timeslot is replaced with reruns of Muppet Babies, turning this (the (two/three only for the 1987-88 season) episodes of Muppet Babies back-to-back) into the "Teen Titans Go! of the 80s" craze!

I kinda wonder what exactly would've been the correct general demographic to be watching something like this, for a preschool show… Legit, my parents divorced when I was 9 during one of our car rides, and I specifically remember my ex-mother choosing to walk all the way home instead of what would've been a 3-hour drive, with my dad picking her up in the middle of the road at night. When I and her moved houses in February 2011, my dad stayed at the house I grew up in, and that's where he lives still. Actually, after my mentally unstable ex-mother disowned me (again in a car ride, and in the middle of the road) over me not agreeing with her crackpot theories, endless discrimination and her undying desire to force every single one of her false beliefs down everybody's throat, I live with my dad now, so I finally got back to live in my first house; The one I desperately didn't want that witch to forcibly remove me from.
What I think I'm getting at is that nobody can be too young to see their parents get a divorce, nor can they be too young to have to learn how to deal with this change in their life. 14 years later and I think I'm managing no longer being part of her reign quite well… Yet, I feel like maybe this episode has something in there that not just me, but anybody having to deal with a divorce may want to listen to (if not ASMR emotionally intelligent Funky Kong)

Seeing as your mother is obviously unstable, I don't think it's worth harboring resentment. I don't think unstable ppl choose to be the way they are, or do as much damage as they do. Often their behavior is consequence not cause. So, it is terrible to internalize or react to those currents anymore than we have to do. As long as we process it.

Divorce is a very difficult concept to grasp for a child. It’s traumatic no matter how parents choice to approach the situation. Because two parental figures are no longer together in the same house and are no longer seem to love each other. Kids at a young age are thought their parents loved each other and when they are no longer together, it can deeply impact the perception of their parents at a young age. Not only that, a child’s brain isn’t fully developed and do not seem to understand other’s feelings besides their own. And all they feel is a black and white Perception of the situation. Parent A left because they don’t love me anymore. I can’t stress enough how common this mentality is at a young age and how important reassurance is to a child.
50% of all first marriages end in divorce. (2023) This episode is truly important but it’s delivery was flawed unfortunately. It wasn’t a matter of if sesame Street was going to tackle divorce, it was a matter of when.

Few years back SS paired with some other company and they did a public showing of this and some other lost media from SS, also had people from different panels talk about it’s obscurity and answered questions. OH YEAH, it was shown to the “public” but you had to buy tickets for it and obviously there was absolutely no recording allowed in the building. I really wish someone would post a subreddit talking about what they saw there and the questions that were asked and answered.

There was a public screening for Sesame Street's 50th anniversary that included clips from other rare, banned or thought to be lost episodes.
But the only other time it was seen before that was in the focus group/ test screenings that took place before the episode would have aired. And of course the end result was a disaster with alot of children fearing it would happen to them and their parents. A producer later confirmed that story and theorised it was because it was happening to a characters parents.
Previously the same writers of this episode covered death, following the real life passing of a long time cast member. But that was handled better and not being a parent in that case may have also been a factor.
