For more information, see the DPIRD website.
Horned animals must be regularly and closely inspected to avoid overgrown horns. If an animal has an ingrown horn, it Is not considered fit for transport, as transport is likely to cause further pain.
Horn tipping should be carried out when:
the horn is growing in a direction that is likely to penetrate the skin,
the horn is touching the skin of the animal or
the horn is blocking the ability for an animal to see clearly from one or both eyes.

Thanks for posting this -- it was very informative; is there a way to set a guide for the
horn to grow in a proper direction (away from face and eyes)? Similar to setting trees?

Why don't you take off a little more of the horn? It's still rather close to the eye.. I'm just wondering

The issue is that cutting farther up the horn could risk cutting into the soft tissue and blood supply of the horn. This can lead to severe pain, bleeding and risk infection. While the horns where loose there was difinatly still a blood supply. Think of it like trimming your fingernails. Trim to far and it can cause serious pain, bleeding and risk infection. What's worse is the idea of removing the horn all together. That's like tearing the whole nail off. Thankfully this is condoned as a inhumane practice. While tipping isn't perfect, it's a simple, cheap and fairly effective solution so long as it's not done overzealously.

Just 5 hours ago we helped a Bull with similar condition. He was very violent and it took 15 men to catch him and hold still for horn trimming.

Why wouldn’t you just band the horns. They fall off within a week or two and it takes no after care.
