The meaning of the split screen is to show no matter how much things change, they still stay the same.

Lauryn Hill is one of the greatest artists of all time! Her album The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill is also one of the greatest of all time, winning album of the year at the Grammys and giving her a record setting 5 Grammys in one night. PLEASE react to the entire album. It is a classic from start to finish.

The split screen is a tribute to the neo soul movement. Lauryn was one of the most successful neo soul artist from that era.
She was pregnant during this video. The 1998 version of her was filmed before she started showing. The 1968 version was filmed when she started to really show. The dress and jacket was designed to cover her stomach but if you look really closely you can catch glimpses of her pregnant belly.
By the time the Ex Factor video came out she had given birth not long before shooting started. The way her body bounced back is so amazing that most people didn't even realize that she was ever pregnant.

This album was massive. A little too massive that Lauren Hill basically hated the lime light. It’s so funny how I look back at this song and can remember exactly the year it came out and what i was doing, This song was released in August 1998. I was 14 or 15.I was entering my freshman year of high school and it would always come on when I was getting out of my moms car when she would drop my sister and I at school. Best memories

Jack!! Bro!!! Lauryn Hill is by far my favorite female artist all-time... She doesn't get the respect that she greatly deserves... I would love to see a reaction from you to two of my favorite tracks from her that she performed during her MTV Unplugged live performance of "Mystery og Iniquity" & "War in the Mind"... Lyrically, masterful and powerful messages are nothing less than jewels of truth... The entire performance of her MTV Unplugged was performed with nothing but her amazing voice and acoustic guitar....

Jack I love your channel and content.
Ms. Lauryn Hill was one of the first to embrace this sound of hip hop and r&b as a solo artist. Think about that. She didnt need to collaborate with rap artists to have what's called the "Love Thug Ballad". Lauryn was all that on her own.
Just a side note... She helped me realize my dreams in Sister Act 2. Whoopi Goldbergs character says to Lauryns character (Rita), "If you get up in the morning and all you can think about is singing then you were meant to be a singer." I've seen her live twice and had the pleasure of meeting her. They really don't make 'em like her any more. A true gem. Forever a legend. 🌻💜

The 90-ies had a very deep, spiritual and karmic type of vibe, very educational, being a teenager and hearing all these themes, such soulful music, all just felt heartfelt. Off the hook talent in general reined, because of amazing musical examples. It was a time of blending, styles, people, speaking your mind, and telling Truth. The music reflected what people went through, no more filters. I hope that these things come in cycles, so we will get back to it again, after all, all is Science.

I liked your commentary on the differences between the 70s, 80s, 90s, and now. Even though you’re probably not more than 20 years old, you’ve observed a lot about the decades that preceded you. I was born in 1975, so I was a kid in the 80s, and came of age in the 90s. I love to look at the ways that popular culture and perspective changes throughout the decades. You might be able to tell me more about what is happening now, but to give you a few thoughts on what changed from the 70s to the 80s to the 90s, I can tell you what it was like to experience it.
There are a lot of things that take place in a decade, and millions of people experiencing them, so obviously I can’t speak to everyone”s experience, just my own experience of popular culture at the time. I was just a kid in the 70s, but the general feeling was one of freedom and allowing yourself to relax and be yourself. When the 80s came around and music swung towards new wave, it was like the general consciousness was tapping in to the weirdest and most offbeat ideas that were left to discover. The overtly weird hairstyles, fashion, neon colors etc. were like freedom of expression being allowed to go out to the furthest and craziest extent possible. And the vibe was about fun and letting imagination run wild.
Then towards the end of the 80s, rap and hip hop entered the mainstream. It was much more raw, direct, and coming from groups like NWA, it was covering an experience of life that was very different than what had so far been focused on in the popular culture. Just the authenticity and realness of the lyrics, and the boldness of a new art form was exciting and undeniable. Coming into the 90s, hip-hop beats made everyone want to dance too.
Then, in about 93, grunge rock, especially the band Nirvana’s album “Nevermind” became popular, and it was like the focus of popular culture changed in the course of a week. This brought in a real desire to poke holes in the hypocrisy of main stream institutions and to call attention to popular culture as an entity in itself. There was a desire to make overt and ironic reference to popular culture of decades past, especially the 70s. You saw fashion and music reject the excess of the 80s and get a little more direct and in your face. Fashion became purposely utilitarian - I remember wearing Dickies work pants to my office job. There are many more things that could be said, especially about how grunge culture glorified the working class in a naive way and how our obsession with irony and reaction of mainstream culture was actually really pretentious. But that’s a taste of what it was like to participate in those three decades.

The beginning of the 60s was an extension of the 50s and post war 40s where there was an economic boom from the Great Depression and War. The late 60s was a reaction to this but failed in that the gov shut the counterculture down but the aesthetics continued on to the early 70s. After Reagan got elected you had another boom (albeit at the expense of Millenials and Gen Zs who are now paying for what the debt they incurred) and along with that you had a decade of excess and vanity but you also had an underground scene of punk rock and hip hop brewing as a reaction to this which exploded in the late 80s with Hip Hop with Public Enemy and NWA and in 1991 with Nirvana, PJ, AiC, and Soundgarden.

You're 18? You have a old soul. Very well spoken and knowledgeable young man. Your parents raised you right. She was pregnant with Bob Marley's son when she did this video. If you like this song then you're going to love The Sweetest Thing, when she was with the Fugees. Please react to that jam
