As a D2D salesman in my earlier years, here are some tips:
Like he said, take a step back after you knock on the door. Give them space. The exception is inside any apartment building where there is literally no room to back up, but that doesn't apply to this business.
You can gauge how receptive someone is based on how they position themselves to their door. If it is open 2 inches, they are holding the door like a shield in front of them; they are not receptive. If they have it open but are standing inside, then they are somewhat receptive. If they step outside, then there is no barrier between you two and unless they have hostile or very defensive body language, they are most likely very friendly and receptive to you.
(This applies to strangers: if they are taking up a lot of space, like stepping side to side, leaning forward, puffing out their chest, then they are trying to 'look bigger' and are ready for a fight, metaphorically. That is defensive or hostile body language, and they are not receptive to you. Sometimes when someone walks outside right away to speak to you, it is not for good intentions, but that is rare. Conversely, if they are in a relaxed stance, relaxed shoulders, nodding, smiling normally, leaning against the wall, that all is usually a good sign. Hands relaxed, good. Hands rigid or in fists, bad. Ran across this three or four times only out of a thousand doors; very rare, don't worry.)
Men prefer to stand at angle to other men. Women prefer for men to stand directly facing them. Generally speaking.
Smile, be polite, but don't be too crisp unless you feel it calls for it. Clean, fresh, don't smell too bad, nice clothes or proper clothes for your business. No one likes talking to hobos.
Shake hands if possible. My name is __, I am doing curbside paintings, etc. When you get good, you can tell if someone is receptive to shaking your hand. Don't go for it right away. Say your pitch, then after they see that you are not in fact a burglar or assassin, they will be more open to talking to you. Then you say, "Sorry, I forgot to introduce myself, my name is __," then reach out to shake their hand. They will usually shake and say their name. Then say, "Nice to meet you, sir/ma'am."
Doesn't matter that you already said you name. This works extremely well. Introduce yourself twice, but only after you have established what you are doing there so they know your intentions.
When you face someone, they are symbolically opposing you, similar to two armies up for battle (especially when they don't know you). If you can get them to face the same direction as you, like the two of you standing side by side, they will feel less pressure, they will feel more like you are on the same team.
A great way to do this is to show them something, a picture, a phone or notepad screen, whatever. You step to the side and gesture for the two of you to see it together. They will usually follow your lead. Now you two are facing the same direction, standing shoulder to shoulder. For curbside paintings, use a picture of their curb. "Real quick, I wanted to show you the comparison." Once they get next to you, show them their curbside, point out that it is faded, then quickly show a picture of your own work. "This is what I want it to look like." Etc. People look where you look, so if you look at your phone, so will they. If you look at their face, they will in turn look at your face.
Hostage negotiation tip from Chris Voss 'Never Split the Difference': Don't ask for something, ask if they are against something (or opposed to something). People naturally want to say No to requests, even if they immediately change their mind. It is a defense mechanism. So ask No-oriented questions. Instead of, "Can I do a curbside paint for you," ask, "Are you opposed to me painting your curbside?" or a variation (Friendly tone). This way, you get a No to work in your favor. For more info, read Chris Voss' book, it is insightful.
Keep track of what houses you have knocked on before, and don't bother people twice. Professionals usually use an app of some sort to keep track of the neighborhood with color-coded boxes on the houses to label them as New, Knock again later, Waiting for husband to get home, No, Serviced, etc. Don't have an app? Just write it down. If they tell you no soliciting, say Bye and move on. You have to leave once you are told no soliciting. It is okay to have not seen the sign, just don't tell them, "Yeah, I saw that, I was just hoping you'd change your mind. Your curb really is a disaster."
I have done it hundreds of times, all you have to do is claim you didn't see the sign, and as long as it isn't huge, they will buy it. "What... Oh! my bad! Didn't see it. Sorry, have a lovely day, sir."
Sometimes my friends would chance a couple of extra sentences saying what we offered as we walked away, but at most they would say, "Hey, if you see me walking down the street, feel free to give me a wave. Have a nice day." As long as you aren't being too bothersome, they won't call the police. 99 times out of 100, they wouldn't call the police even if they threatened to, they just hate sales people. This is why it's important to be friendly and wish everyone a nice day. (They chanced it because many people who have a no soliciting sign aren't serious about it and will still get your service)
Important: Wish everyone a nice day/lovely day/fantastic day. Even if they curse you out. It will make you feel better, and it will make them feel like the bad guy. Take the high road. Don't take it personally; if they are mad, it is usually not about you. And it is a numbers game.
(We had one person get legit angry and threaten to have us arrested; he was certain that our permit didn't apply to his neighborhood, made us leave, and followed us until we walked more than five houses away. One bad time in a few thousand.)
We had permits, but from what I have heard (I am not a lawyer) the most cops will do is tell you to leave the neighborhood. And where we were, neighborhood signs that said No Soliciting were not law, they are put up by HOA. Even if they are real city-signs. That being said, best to contact HOA and offer to do the curbsides to make the neighborhood safer. Pretend you are offering a discount for them, you will do all the work, and ask them what they prefer for the style of curbside paint. Best to get permission if you are worried about it. (I am not a lawyer)
When knocking on a door for any business, say you're doing it for college or for a loan payment or whatever. It comes across better than some guy in a SunRun uniform who works for the solar company and obviously isn't strapped for cash.
If they have nice grass, don't walk on it unless you have to. Don't take a leak on someone's property. Many people will let you in to use the bathroom. Funnily enough, most of our guys would make it their daily goal (aside from sales goals) to be invited for dinner to give the full pitch once the husband/wife gets home. "He gets home at 5:30? Perfect, I'll be back by around 6 to go over all the details. No obligation, but I think you'll love it. Hey, don't forget save me a plate (smile, laugh) I'll see you later, ma'am." Most of them were successful around 3/5 days. It is certainly possible to get someone to give you water or a bathroom break or whatever, you won't believe how nice people are.
Sunscreen in the summer. You'll thank me later. (And drink water. Soda and coffee makes you use the bathroom)

Great advice!! Another tip, leave your business card. The ones that didn't say yes initially, might change their minds after seeing what you did to their neighbors curb. Great job as usual. Char F 🌹

Good tips D. Door knocking is hard these day but you are making it happen. Do you leave information in the mailboxes for those like me who don't normally answer the knock?
