I think the reason the movie feels so short is the story structure. Not much happens in the film if you break it down. However, I think the movie is more of a drama about grief than it is about the mystery. It also does a great job at bringing awareness to serious problems on reservations.
So Renner's daughter is already dead in this one? Headcannon: This is the same character he played in Arrival. After losing his daughter in that movie, he gave up being a math professor and took up game tracking.
Elizabeth Olsen was fantastic in her breakthrough performance in the film, MARTHA MARCY MAY MARLENE. That was when she registered on my radar as a standout actress.
I disagree with everyone's opinion on the pacing. This out of all his movies were supposed to be a slow burn and it worked way better that way actually.
Taking this opportunity to promote the original Insomnia (1997). No, not the Nolan/Pacino one, the Stellan Skarsgard one. It's one of the best films of the 1990s and part of the Criterion Collection.
I just saw it. I'm shocked this is one of the few movies that the writers, or someone really has first hand knowledge of Wyoming in general. Attitudes, and a few of the phrases are something you really do run into on the streets here.
I thought Elizabeth Olsen fit rather well as her character. She's attractive but not "so pretty that I can't see her being a federal agent" type of attractive.
Every time I see Elizabeth Olsen face, even though she is sort of attractive, I can't stop thinking of her older twin siblings the Olsen Twins. It's just awkward.
As someone who has been best friends with Dave for 33 years, none of what you just said is true about him. And Jake is the last person whose opinion of Dave you should trust.
It must be so easy to sit behind a screen and judge someone you don't even know lol..I don't know these people but I feel like they're extremely fun to watch, they get me laughing constantly and seem very chill. Let people be and focus on your own shortcomings (judgementalness, perhaps?)
Would Dave make the "too pretty for the job" comment for a man? Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt are pretty boys, but I doubt he would question their placement in the same job role as Olsen. I wish Sarah was in the car as I'd appreciate her take on that comment.
"Vile" was interesting. In a lot of ways it reminded me of "Would You Rather", except I personally enjoyed "Vile" far more. I've heard from others who have seen it that it comes off like Saw, and that is a fair comparison as well. Basically a both deal with a bunch of strangers brought together and forced to do terrible things to each other and themselves, deciding how much they are willing to take based off of how much they are willing to allow another to suffer in their stead. With "Would You Rather" there is an element of choice for all of those gathered, even if they didn't know what they were signing up for, and with "Vile" you have people who were kidnapped. One deals with a sadist offering people their dreams if they will degrade themselves and sacrifice others for his amusement and the other has some evil, unseen corporation using human guinea pigs to collect data and materials. While the acting in "Vile" was nothing to write home about and in some cases pretty bad it still seemed to come off as more entertaining and enjoyable and the characters, at least some of them, were more sympathetic and likable. The premise compared to "Would You Rather" is absurd but when dealing with low budget horror movies I'm the type of person who embraces the absurd. I think that it would have highly benefited from a larger budget as the gore was more suggested than shown and with the type of movie it was, it really needed to get a bit graphic simply because that was basically the entire point. I would personally recommend it before I'd recommend "Would You Rather", although it should be noted that I've been told that I have terrible taste when it comes to my love for low-budget flicks. One interesting note about "Vile" is that Maynard James Keenan is listed in the credits for the film. I've seen this movie five times now, although it has been a few years since my last viewing, and for some reason have yet to actually see him within it. I can be a bit oblivious at times though so perhaps the fault is mine.
This dude Taylor Sheridan is quickly becoming one of my favorite screenwriters. First Sicario, then Hell or High Water, now this. It's 3 for 3, as far as I'm concerned.
MAJOR SPOILER: In the flashback sequence, I loved how Jon Bernthal was able to wreck and beat living the shit out his five drunk friends, who wants to rape his Native American girlfriend, all at once in that little cramped trailer before eventually subdued by them. What a bad-ass.
On one hand, this movie does not look like the Wind River, on the other this actually looks like there is Wyoming scenery in the movie for a change. Caveat I've only seen the trailers, I intend to see the movie on Tuesday when it is matinee pricing all day..
I'm honestly surprised given everything else from A24 has made its way over there. But then again it's not the most accessible movie for the general moviegoing audience in Central IL. Hell, Malick films haven't made it there after Tree of Life.
Is that a Diet Sunkist? So Brad has the same taste in soda as my grandmother. Seriously though, how many people drink those? I never see anyone drink them.
Elizabeth Olsen was robbed of an Oscar nod for Martha Marcy May Marlene (2011). To me? She gave the best performance of that year. Suck it Meryl Streep. You're a great actress but The Iron Lady was a tepid hiccup of a biopic and her performance was equally lukewarm.
Movie Idea: A murder takes place during a "Midnight Screenings", and Brad and the team have to solve the mystery.
Possible title: Midnight Screamings
Dude...that is freaking awesome! :D
culwin I can't tell you how much I want this to be a real thing!
I'm in!
That's better than my idea about a murderous singing group targeted to teenage girls called "The Boy Boy Band"...
The entire movie has to take place inside the car and the camera can't move.
I think the reason the movie feels so short is the story structure. Not much happens in the film if you break it down. However, I think the movie is more of a drama about grief than it is about the mystery. It also does a great job at bringing awareness to serious problems on reservations.
Aaron McKim yes exactly plenty of crime solving shows and movies. This was emotion grabbing .
So Renner's daughter is already dead in this one? Headcannon: This is the same character he played in Arrival. After losing his daughter in that movie, he gave up being a math professor and took up game tracking.
Riplee86 but how do we tie it in to Hansel and Gretel witch hunter
So... is this the Hawkeye origin story movie? How else would he be so skilled with a bow and arrow?
Marvels What If: hawkeye and scarlett witch
I'd be interested to see Brad's Blu-ray/DVD collection.
Jonathan Sefcik very much so
Sadly, there was already one person interested in his DVD collection a few years ago.
majdo007 what does that mean
MOVIE Master Vevo Somebody stole Brad's DVD collection a few years back.
Elizabeth Olsen was fantastic in her breakthrough performance in the film, MARTHA MARCY MAY MARLENE. That was when she registered on my radar as a standout actress.
Lance Davis *You see her boobies too :)*
Sheridan is writing the Sicario sequel. Plus I thought this movie had the best point-blank no cover shootout since Enemy of the State.
“Are there any recorded examples of a bear raping a human in real life?” - Brad "The Cinema Snob" Jones, August 23rd, 2017.
"I could see this as a 100 minute TV pilot." Well it does have the same set-up as Twin Peaks.
I disagree with everyone's opinion on the pacing. This out of all his movies were supposed to be a slow burn and it worked way better that way actually.
The movie you're thinking about does exist, it's called The Revenant.
I want to one day have a beard as good as Dave's
Taking this opportunity to promote the original Insomnia (1997). No, not the Nolan/Pacino one, the Stellan Skarsgard one. It's one of the best films of the 1990s and part of the Criterion Collection.
I want a musical midnight screenings.

I saw this film at the Travelling Sydney Film Festival, the third time it had ever been screened
Why do so many people bitch about Dave? His reviews are usually some of the most entertaining.
People bitch about everything.
their just jealous he got Sarah and they didnt

I'll give him the fat thing. I'm wildly out of shape.
I got the trailer for It before Logan Lucky. It's just a thing right now.
Would Dave make the "too pretty for the job" comment for a man? Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt are pretty boys, but I doubt he would question their placement in the same job role as Olsen. I wish Sarah was in the car as I'd appreciate her take on that comment.
Saw this last night. Almost perfect to me but held back a bit but the performances were amazing.
I WOULD say it's a great film. It's the best I've seen right behind Moonlight and Logan, this year, so far.
SCharlesDennicon Moonlight was last year. Still great though.

Saw this last night and it was pretty good but didn't blow me away.
Give us a musical midnight screenings, y'know you wanna
A psycho in a bear suit? Does The Wicker Man count?
MAJOR SPOILER:
In the flashback sequence, I loved how Jon Bernthal was able to wreck and beat living the shit out his five drunk friends, who wants to rape his Native American girlfriend, all at once in that little cramped trailer before eventually subdued by them. What a bad-ass.
Airjet2582 It was such a great scene! He really hit hard. I felt every punch he dished out.
Any relation to the alsin twins from Full house?
[if you're asking seriously] She's their sister
Cool! :D
and she appeared in a few of their early videos
Same amount of acting talent
On one hand, this movie does not look like the Wind River, on the other this actually looks like there is Wyoming scenery in the movie for a change. Caveat I've only seen the trailers, I intend to see the movie on Tuesday when it is matinee pricing all day..
If it helps people, I had a professor who used to live in Utah,. When he moved here, the middle of nowhere suddenly obtained new meaning.
Did Dave always have that scar on his head? Because to me it looks kinda fresh.
Cooking mishap.
Actually,
On Northern Exposure, Fleischman was a doctor and he did not solve any murders.
Yours truly,
Jess Fuhkinwitcha
If you really think about it, the reveal would not work at the beginning at all.
Did A Ghost Story make it to Springfield yet?
Kevin Allen It might not make it there. Brad might not see it till it comes out on Blu-ray.
I'm honestly surprised given everything else from A24 has made its way over there. But then again it's not the most accessible movie for the general moviegoing audience in Central IL. Hell, Malick films haven't made it there after Tree of Life.
Holy Shit! This Movie was directed By the Thug who works with the Fitzpatricks!
I thought it was great
Is that a Diet Sunkist?
So Brad has the same taste in soda as my grandmother.
Seriously though, how many people drink those? I never see anyone drink them.
I hated that flashback, it's so fucking jarring
Solid movie.
What kind of wildlife exists in LA, besides panhandlers?

Vile is an insane torture movie. It was not very good.
More akin to the Saw sequels or Martyrs? Not that I like either kind, just curious.
I'd say Martyrs. The characters have to torture each other to escape a house. The Saw sequels are way less serious than this movie.
Thank you :)
I hate when people judge shit they could not have created themselves tho
So you never have an opinion on anything unless you yourself can do it?
Stoned Gremlin Productions I dont insult a directors talent just because the movie didn't seem perfect because I know nothing is
*We need to build a wall*

I miss dave's cool dandy mustache from the last video. Just kidding, your reviews with him are unwatchable.
