It was Doran's only touchdown. Was it his only catch as well? Seven years later he scored three touchdowns against the Giants for Dallas in a 31-31 tie. This was the only game Dallas did not lose in their first season of 1960 .(12-4-60).
Two best Detroit players. Barry Sanders and Bobby Layne. Period. I can say that because I grew up in Detroit and watched countless losses from the blue and silver.
There's also Doak Walker, Yale Lary, Joe Schmidt, Alex Karras. I remember Lem Barney from football cards that I still have. And Billy Sims was an excellent RB.
@@jstube36 You can add Gilbert (Gil) Maines to that list, he played on two of Detroit Championship teams 1953 & 1957, he was a monster linebacker. I met him back in the late 80's or early 90s, in Toledo Ohio, 50 miles from Detroit. He was very successful in business, his business card had his D.L. Football-picture on it, which I thought was cool.

Honestly two best dynasties pre superbowl era. Browns were fire during the late 40's throughout the 50's and early 60's. The lions were also fire during the 50's.
Good thing teams started investing more in grounds management. It's a wonder any guy's career, ACLs, ankles lasted longer than a season or two playing on those fields.
@@jstube36 Old school, blood and guts football! That was the NFL in the 50s. What the players could do then would probably get them thrown out of a game today.
@@jstube36 I think what Jake Reiss meant is that both the Browns and Lions won 3 NFL Championships during the 1950's decade. The Browns won titles in 1950, 1954, and 1955. The Lions won titles in 1952, 1953, and 1957. They were not Super Bowls, but they were World Championships.
As the story goes, Bobby Layne (with bourbon on his breath), told his offensive line (with the game on the line), "You durn guys jez block and ol' Bobby will bring you the champeenship."
It's a cycle. Just about every franchise has it's day in the Sun. There are many teams today that are shells of what they were. Just look at New England. After the most dominate run in NFL history. Now just another team.
Winning in the NFL and all sports is a cycle. The teams that are good now may not be few years from now. Look at New England now that Brady is gone. All the franchises have had their runs of success. And long runs of drought. That's just the nature of things.

After the 8 minute mark --> What a nice catch after the pass deflected off the targeted Browns receiver. But wait; a penalty occurred because two eligible receivers cannot catch a pass? That 1953 rule hurt!!!! The Browns would've scored for sure
Of course much has changed from the beginnings of the NFL. But what teams like the Browns, Rams, 49ers, Lions and later Giants and Colts showcased in the 50's was the beginnings of the modern game. Offenses opened up. Defenses countered. Cleveland(thanks to Paul Brown) practically wrote the book for modern offensive tactics/strategy. And The Giants(thanks to Tom Landry) did the same for defense. That decade brought facemasks for helmets. And of course the NFL on TV took off in the 50's. The specter and drama of the NFL was brought to the living room. This started the NFL on it's way to replacing Baseball as America's game.
I am a huge lions fan, So I am just going to watch these old games for the rest of the season :)
My late dad ❤️ 1950s detroit lions
What a pass by Bobby Lane and catch by a guy with only this pass completion all year.
It was Doran's only touchdown. Was it his only catch as well? Seven years later he scored three touchdowns against the Giants for Dallas in a 31-31 tie. This was the only game Dallas did not lose in their first season of 1960 .(12-4-60).
Future Hall of Fame Steelers' Head Coach, Chuck Noll, played guard for Paul Brown 🙂

Amazing that Lions QB Bobby Layne..would have drunk alot the night before the 'big game' ..totally amazing
3:35 "In playoff games, the Lions have never been defeated." Oh, how times have changed...
The Browns would erase that statement by blowing out the Lions in the '54 game. And Detroit would avenge that in '57.

Why do the lions helmet and uniform look like Notre Dame uniforms
