  • I am just back from 4 months backpacking Europe, on my trip I used the Eurail/Interrail Pass App to get around. The more you use the app the more you understand how Interrail works. That is why I wanted to create this guide to share my Interrail Tips for those looking for a step-by-step guide. It will hopefully help those planning an Interrail trip save both time and money.

    Hi Laura Grace,
Your videos are a gold mine for me so thanks for sharing. I’m traveling from Croatia to UK over 6 months soon. First time in Europe at age 66, low budget and with a backpack. You are helping me solve the puzzle.

Super video. I'm an 'oldie' and although I've been using my app to plan our journey (I haven't started yet) I don't have the intuitive knowledge you young people have. So your explanations were clear, interesting and valuable. I learned loads from you - I'll probably need to watch it a few more times to keep the knowledge in my head. So go raibh míle maith agat for taking the time and effort in making this video and sharing your knowledge. This planet needs more kind and thoughtful people like you.

Hi Laura! Thank you for the video, it's extremely helpful. The Stations tab helps you look up stations to which trains are available from a particular station on the specified day. This is helpful incase you do not have a location planned and you want to move on with your journey.

Thanks Laura - this will be very useful for our first trip later this year. I just tried the Station section of the App that you were not sure about . If you type in a name of a location ie : Leeds and press the 'Now' , it brought up a list of trains departing from the station over the next hour. Touching any of them shows their routes and stops. You can also pick future times or dates. I guess it helps in vey busy city centre stations . Leeds had a train leaving every 2-3 mins from 7pm . R

I traveled in the early 90's using the Thomas Cook European Rail Guide book, which is long gone now. It was always fun to plot a course from where you were to where you wanted to be and know you could be anywhere in Europe in 24 hours. It was so much fun, and I'm glad it''s moved up into the 21st century.

I interailed twice in 1987 and 1988 and back then we only had to write down the name of stations we were travelling from and to in a little booklet, so easy it was back then!
I am back on the rails this autumn again after all these years😃! How it all has changed ! Thank you so much for your clear explanation, it helps a lot!👍🏻

Correction : your explanation about the difference between Interrail and Eurail is wrong. The difference is based on your country of RESIDENCE, not your nationality. So, if you are a US citizen, but you live (legally😊) in Europe, you can buy the Interrail pass. It is cheaper because you cannot travel in all 33 countries - your country of residence is excluded from the pass. In other words, Interrail is for 32 countries, not 33 (except for the first trip to leave your country of RESIDENCE, and the last one to return to your country of RESIDENCE). I hope this helps clear the misunderstandings.

My 2x3 months pass starts tomorrow. Been fooling around in the app but still quite anxious to get started. Your video helped me alleviate some of those feelings.
Let's get cracking! Discover this beautiful Europe. Yolo
Oh one quick question: let's say you did the 5min between trains & you missed it, can you just activate a new journey and off you go?
Or do you have to specify all the journeys for the day, and then it generates the qr code for that day. And you cannot change it anymore?

    • @Live.Adventure.Travel
      @Live.Adventure.Travel  Рік тому +5

Awww don't be too worried about using the app. You get used to it very quickly.
You can change it around, although sometimes there is a issue, say your train was at 5.00pm and you missed it. Then the next train is at 5.30pm, if you don't delete the 5.00pm train off the app before the time of departure you will not be able to activate the 5.30pm ticket as you will have a another train journey active.
Personally, I just got on the train anyway when that happened to me as the 5.30pm train was also included in the Interrail Pass. I was however not asked for a ticket. I'd imagine they'd be ok with it but that depends on what inspector says. If you would prefer to have the right ticket you can go to the ticket box in the train station and ask them to print one out for you. It should be FREE still.
I hope you have the best time on your trip 💛

Hi Laura! I know that rail passes are extremely popular, but they are definitely not cheap, especially if you are on a budget .I will reveal tips and tricks to you. From my experience, traveling by train is significantly cheaper if you don't take Rail passes. If you take a Rail pass for it, it will cost you a lot of money, several hundred euros for each Rail pass, and you must also buy and pay extra for each reservation for every train marked IC, EC, NC, NJ and similar. The only advantage of the rail pass is mobility. Since I plan my trips several months in advance, I prefer to give up that mobility and save money, I take individual fixed train tickets for seat second class with reservation for each train, which are much cheaper. Of course you have to buy them several months (3 or 4 for my exprience) in advance, because as the date approaches, the occupancy of the train increases and the price of the ticket increases. Another little trick is to plan travel on weekdays from Monday to Thursday, because tickets for train those days are often much cheaper than on Friday and weekends When added up, you will save a minimum of 100 euros probably even more. This is significant if you are on a budget.

Rail pass gives you freedom which you don't definitely have in your way.

@@VladimirLukele You're right ! In my way you don't have that flexibility, but in my way you save money. Isn't everyone's goal to make their trip as cheap as possible? For example, I have a two-week train tour planned for June this year Split-Bratislava -Wroclaw-Poznan-Wroclaw - Bratislava -Split. I have all tickets for all trains with reservations for only 140 euros. You can't get this price with any Rail pass.

@@danijelsedic6874 It depends what you look for. I'd rather pay a bit more to have flexibility. I don't have stress when anything goes wrong.

Most IC and EC in Europe don't require reservations or any supplements. (Never head of NC...)
Of course, Interrail as a fully flexible product is more expensive than advance purchase restricted fares. But it's far cheaper than buying single tickets on the day. So it goes down to what kind of trip are you taking. If you have a pre-planned itinerary few weeks before travel, definitely go for single tickets. But if you want to be able to make last minute decisions and explore (which usually makes a far more interesting holiday), then it's usually cheaper to use Interrail *unless* you plan to visit one of the pass-unfriendly countries (Italy, France, Spain and to some extent Portugal), or one of the countries with very cheap fares (basically the east).

All the videos I watched talked about not knowing what that Stations menu feature was for. Seems like EuRail thought the same, so it no longer exists on the app now lol

Hi!! Thank you so much for doing this video, you're a lifesaver. But quick question. I assume you were traveling during the summer, was it hard to get seats on the trains that didn't require seat reservation?

Hi Laura, thanks for making such a great video! It's really helpful. I'm planning to take the Golden pass train in Switzerland, does it utilise 1 flexible day from the Eurail pass?

Hi Laura , thank you so much for all the info. This is my first time to use the eurail global pass and some part of the functions in the apps planner is quite confusing for me but i was able to follow some from what you were showing on your video. So actually we are four of us on this trip to Europe and i've been trying to do our seat reservation together but i'm confuse how to do it. I try to do to add a traveler but for some reason it will give me different time slot for the next traveler. Can you give me some tip, thanks, Ed from California.

Thank you so much for your video! I was getting very frustrated in trying to book and pay for a reservation within the app until you explained that you have to go to an external website, put all the information back again and then pay for it! Wow I didn't expected that. Will then show the QR code for the ticket in the app?

Reservations are never shown in the app as this is a complete different process :/ You get most reservations as PDF Files per E-Mail and on the train you show then both the QR-Code of Your pass and the reservation

@@seewulf1993 Thank you, just got back a couple of weeks ago. I did not know how to put the QR code for the ticket, I had the PDF printed for the reservation but they told me I needed the QR code on the app also. Took me a while to figured out, the app is not user friendly.
Also better have a phone with internet because the Train's WIFI sucks in all of them!
