  • You've been asking for a pond update... and here it is! It's a long video too because there was a lot more to talk about than I expected. So come hang out with me around the pond to look at the wakins and watonai (and Submarine!). I'll also show you the frogs that have been hanging out around my pond with all their thousands of tadpoles. Watch till the end for a glimpse at the patio bowl pond too, although don't get too excited. The plants look terrible lol.

    You need to install a camera in your yard. That is really creepy. I can't imagine any small animal would mess with that gator head. If anything it should scare them away. Since you are on UA-cam and a lot of people know you I think it would probably be a good idea to install some kind of surveillance. That just seems really strange. Maybe look into getting Ring or Nest or some other general security system with cameras that you can access via your smart device.

      I didn't say it wasn't raccoons. It's better to be safe than sorry. And yes, I deal with raccoons on a daily basis. I live smack dab in the middle of the mountains.

    Hi Jennie... your "droopy" plant looks like an impatiens plant from what I can tell.... they tend to like shady, moister areas. They aren't happy in bright sun and intense heat.... you may want to move it for it to survive. May I suggest a miniature butterfly bush--they stay small and attract butterflies etc.... Love that the frogs enjoy your pond! 😊

    I think I've said this before, but I insist: You should name one of your wakin goldfish Phoenix. Then it would be your Wakin Phoenix.

    You should introduce some flagfish into the pond. Their native, beautiful, small enough to hide from predators, and most importantly - they love to eat hair algae!

    Finally an update on the pond! As for the skimmer and small fish the screen will work but you could simply remove the weir flap and they can swim in and out. For the raccoons get a motion controlled water jet and it will scare anything away! Enjoy the frogs and wildlife in the meantime!

    You could try putting a common plecko in your big pond to help with the algae. I think that they would be camouflaged enough not to get eaten. Have a great day!!!

    do you have any fast growing underwater plants (anacharis, parrotsfeather, etc)? Maybe that would outcompete the string algae for nutrients. Raccoons are a massive pest, I am so thankful they have not messed with any of my tubs (fingers crossed). also, the lily will need fertilization (root tab) every 2-4 weeks if you want blooms.

    • @flashofpink
      @flashofpink  6 років тому +22

      Solid Gold Aquatics I have had lillies in my ponds for years and they always bloom amazing(5-6 blooms per plant!) with out fertilizing.

    • @RachelOLeary
      @RachelOLeary 6 років тому +9

      A big variable as well is how its potted- what size container, what type of soil, etc and if the pond has substrate or is bare (like a plastic bin/tub) as well as stocking density. Lilies potted into the substrate of a pond/container don't require the fertilization those that in for instance a 3g plastic pot do. I have found that fertilizing my potted lilies in my bare bottom tubs every 2-4 weeks ensures good blooms.

    Hi, definitely use it as a frog pond, night vision security cameras would be great to pickup your sneaky backyard landscaper. More native plants and plants overhanging the pond throughout the bark mulch areas. Creating more deep shade around the pond should encourage frogs to use your pond even more.
    The patio pond plants need full sun for at least part of the day, for potting media I’ve found success with 50/50 decomposed cow manure and potting mix. Using paper to line the pot and gravel to top off the potting media. Lillies especially need full sun and prefer minimal surface agitation/ splashing so best placed away from the waterfall.
    The pond looks really good especially the hardscape.

    Yeah, don't bother putting goldfish in there. Your goldfish was probably hiding from predators in the skimmer. You can try little fish like native minnows, mollies etc...
    You need floating plants or water lilies to block out the light to control the algae.

    • @flashofpink
      @flashofpink  6 років тому +1

      My water lettuce are finally taking off and I'm hoping they'll help control the algae a bit.

    • @professorm4171

      If you do really want to have goldfish in a pond, you'll have to make your pond a bit bigger and deeper, like 4 feet deep and hiding caves at the bottom of the pond. My pond was ravaged by raccoons until I figured that out.
      The dirt around you seems pretty easy to dig.

    Maybe some feeder comets. It could be a low risk addition to the pond. After all their intended "purpose" was to be fed to another animal. So a 50/50 chance on survival in the pond, is better than the almost 100% chance of being food, or dying in a crowded pet store tank.

    I renovated a house last summer with a neglected pool FULL of tadpoles. I made sure to save cleaning the pool for last but for the entire job my favorite part of the day was getting there first thing in the morning and watching them. White substrate would look awesome in the bowl pond and make those adorable little Mollys stand out better. Love your videos!

    What a beautiful bird bathing in your pond! And those frogs sound so different from the ones we have at our pond! So cool to hear the differences across the country! (I'm in WA, & of course you are in FL....😊)

    Frog Pond! I love it, even though its not what you originally started with I think its a beautiful thing to have a habitat for native species to breed. Your Dad wearing your logo shirt is the sweetest. I agree a trail cam or night cam on the pond 'activites' would also be a fun addition to this channel. I'm glad you show your defeats as well as your triumphs. Seeing how the indoor pond is evolving 'even though the plants aren't doing well' helps me feel like I can keep going on as a fellow hobbyist. I enjoy seeing all your pets and wild pets as well.

    Hey
    Improvisation near your skimmer box.
    Thank you for sharing any mistakes or environmental accidents... very helpful.
    Nature is a tricky thing.
    Predators will definitely come once they know there is “food”... *sigh* a battle

    tadpoles are soo cute.. so much nostalgia since when I was little I used to ride horses for a bit and while riding them in a certain area where there was a ditch or a stream (idk which) I would look forward to seeing the tadpoles there every time we rode past them *hehe*

    Hi Jennie!
    You could build a screen canopy over the pond to filter some of the sunlight out. Or, a pergola with a screen.

    So happy to see a pond update! I LOVE frogs and tadpoles so much! I have a 5k pond and the frogs might be my favorite thing lol. They are so darn cute and entertaining. Really stay on top of that screen if you decide to keep it because if it gets to clogged the pump could run dry. If you're not adding fish I would remove it honestly for fear of burning out the pump. Or get a bigger mesh at least. I have a negative edge skimmer on my pond so I have to deal with a similar situation. Adding a little shade to my pond has helped a lot with algae, wilty plants and temp. Sail shades would look great in your yard. Best of luck to you and keep the videos coming!
