    I honestly think the hair typing system was meant to help us gain understanding and we let it divide us because we were told that having a loose texture was better so all of the sudden the 3's became the "nice" and "beautiful".

    subbed for the low porosity realness! i just learned im low porosity & med/high density, after 5 years! after trying ALL of the methods, i finally realized working in smaller sections was The.Game.Changer. (6-8 sections, but about 4-5 subsections for gel application.) adding 30 min heat cap conditioners, "greenhousing" the night before wash day, using warm water through the *whole* process, and using diluted conditioner while detangling (before gel, cheaper alternative to hair milks) have completely, shockingly turned my wash & go from teeny-tiny poofy coils to curls that finally hang & show some length. dang, moisture be weird, y'all!

      Thank you for sharing what worked for you.i do have a few questions though. When you created a 'hair milk by diluting the conditioner to detangle before gel, are you saying you only detangle before you add gel so this mixture is your leave in, or this is before you shampoo? Also, how long do you take to work a product into each section? I'm not sure if my porosity but it's definitely not high porosity so I tend to pay attention to low porosity videos! I sometimes forget the rule of warming everything up and struggle to get my roots defined as good as my ends and midshaft. I also need to figure out my crown area's porosity as this is a completely different texture! How often are you shampooing and resetting?

      I cant figure out my perosity .. i tried the cup of water thing and the first time i pushed the hair in the water and it stayed on the bottom for about an hour. But then i watched a video and the person didnt submerge their hair they just sat it on the top so I thought I did it wrong... So then when i tried tht the hair stayed on the top so im totally confused now 🙄🙄🙄😭

      Kamaria Denny. Made sure that strands of hair you going to be using is free of any kinds of products (water rise first) then Pat dry. Then put the hair in a cup of water "DONT NOT PUSH DOWM" let it drop on it own. Seem like you are low porosity because it took so long to drop.

    I have been natural over 3 years and during that time 90% of the time I wore protective styles (mostly braids and twist) with added hair because I had no clue on how to take care of my own hair and feeling ugly with my short kinky hair. I felt I looked like a boy and my spouse wasn't attracted to me (thoughts in my head).
    This summer I challenged myself to learn to love my hair and do a wash n go challenge. From June 1st thru Sept 1 I would wash my hair once a week and only doing a wash n go.
    Repairing the damage I created from doing back to back protective styles.
    Watching your videos have helped me thru this process. Even though we don't have the same texture hair. I'm a low porosity 4c girl. Watching how you care for your hair and techniques of your wash n go has helped me fall in love with my hair. Throughout this process I have seen my hair flourish. I haven't seen an extreme amount of growth with is fine, however I noticed because how healthy my hair has become. I experience little to no shedding. It may sound crazy but my hair texture has changed (or discovered under that dry brittle hair).
    I have even been able to encourage others and start them on their natural hair journey.
    Hair Mary (Amber) Thank you for what you do...

      Same here. I hated it on my hair but then realized that my hair needed way more moisture under the gel or else it would leave my hair really hard or I would use too much.. I need a good product with moisture and slip under it

    Great video! I have 4c low porosity hair. It took me about 6 months to master my wash n go and I love my wash n go's. They are so low maintenance! I agree about the twist outs, you never really know how they are going to turn out and they don't last very long. My wash n go's last for 7 days. Learning how to do a wash n go has changed my hair game. I get soooo many compliments and people always say "my hair can't do that." But I tell them that their haIr CAN do this, but there is a learning curve, and you have to be patient to learn it. My go to gel is flaxseed gel. I make 3 month supply at a time a freeze it!

    • @musicluvsme18
      @musicluvsme18 7 років тому +2

      Christian Parker I use the highest setting and air flow. It really depends on the thickness/density of your hair, your product choices and the type dryer you have for timing. I sit under mine for 45 mins to 1 hour;depends on what products I use. This may seem like a long time for some but it takes my hair 48 hrs to air dry/ more than 1 hour for diffusing. I have used my hooded dryer for years and haven't seen any adverse effects to my hair from the use of indirect heat. I have medium density/varying types of low porosity hair strands. Also my curls are similar to Amber's curls; just to give you an idea of my hair as I don't have a picture up. You just have to play around with temp and time to see what works for you. Hope this helps and wasn't too long to read.

    In the beginning I was very interested in what my hair type was, but I’ve learned that it doesn’t help do anything as it relates to my hair. And agreed, no two whatevers are alike, so it is only a divisive thing...
    I agree with you’re density and porosity statements as well. I am low porosity and high density... product selections , patience, and acceptance are the most important things that you need on this natural hair journey!

    I totally agree. I mentioned in my 10 Secrets all Naturals need to know video, that I swore I had high porosity hair but I learned shortly after using high porosity products and methods that I was sooo wrong. Knowing your porosity is a great tip!

  • @1GoldenBreeze
    @1GoldenBreeze 7 років тому +6

    I mostly agree. I especially don't like when some of us naturals say things like xyz product isn't made for a particular hair type. Maybe that might be true to some extent, but it should not stop us from trying a particular product. If I had listened to that I never would have tried the kinky-curly curling custard. That gel and others with a like consistency is what my hair likes best. Eco is a favorite for many naturals, but my hair said "nope not a fan" so I had to keep searching. I use wetline extreme and its my favorite less expensive gel. I have figured out my hair type from a chart point of view but I don't let that decide what products I use. It is my texture, density, and porosity that decides that. Like you, twist out and braid out don't give me the best outcome. Either wash n go, or roller set look best for my hair. I'm okay with hair typing, because it isn't really the problem. The real problem is some of us as people when we seem to think that one hair type is somehow better or prettier than another one.

    So I probably watched this when it came out and I just now broke down and figured out my hair type which is low porosity. I have changed all of my regimens (which have not worked with holding in moisture) and watering down my thick leave in conditioner, staying away from thick butters, and only using light oils with humectants and it has changed my life! I did not like wash n gos, but knowing your hair porosity will definitely help if you can never get it right. I wanna slap myself for waiting so long of not figuring out my hair type! I'm not fully natural quite yet, still in the transitioning phase and plan to BC this summer. Anywho, this video was VERY informative. When I am natural, wash and go's I've planned to be my go to style. They SEEM simple and easy enough to do and I love the way they look. But watching all these youtube videos with wash and go's and hair typing has just become overwhelming! I've become obsessed with hair typing and stuff even before I'm natural haha! I think I'm gonna let all that go. Porosity and density do seem way more important than curl pattern, when trying to learn about your hair.

    I think the problem with the hair typing thing is the way people regard it and not necessarily the hair typing system itself. It was made to be beneficial to naturals, yet "we" turned it into something divisive. I do think the hair typing chart should be modernized to include porosity and density as well, because those things matter just as much, if not more than just your type of hair curl.

    • @emileebates128
      @emileebates128 7 років тому +5

      Mariama Bah I agree, but you can't possibly fit all possible natural hair curl types into 4 types (3c, 4a, 4c, etc.) In some parts of my hair, I have loose shrunken coils and in other parts I have loose, frizzy waves.

    • @Maryxx95
      @Maryxx95 7 років тому +5

      Naturally Emi yeah, good point. There isn't really a hair typing system for multiple hair textures per person. I have multiple types myself: 4b in the back, 3c at the crown, 4a in the front. So complicated.

      I hear you...but two people could have the same density, porosity level and curl pattern/texture and their hair could STILL react differently to the same product....i get the hair typing system; i just don't think it should be regarded as factual information when it is strictly based on someone's opinion

    • @irrelevance3859
      @irrelevance3859 5 років тому +2

      I think it's inaccurate. There's way to many textures. I feel like it would make sense for the texture to classified with curl Shape. S curl, C/O curl and Straight. You can be 3b and have an S curl and 4b and still have an S curl. And the numbers should be how course hair is. It just makes more sense. Density, porosity and thickness should be more relevant.

    Gurl preach cousin!!!!! From the beginning of my hair journey I was determined to figure out my hair’s porosity, so I bought a microscope to be certain. I know now that I have low porosity hair. I was lucky the very first products I used were successful. I learned to use a diffuser. Yes I like my hair to dry about 80% before diffusing and my main focus is to dry the scalp. I don’t like to sleep on wet hair. I did the research so my hair life would be easier. I watched several tutorials on how to do a wash and go, tried raking and realized that wasn’t going to work so I discovered shingling. Works amazing on my dense 4b-4c low porosity hair.

Like when I tell people what I do, I stress that too; but people think I'm not trying to "share the secret" or I don't wanna help them. Natural hair is TRIAL AND ERROR. It took me cutting my waist length hair and starting over my natural hair journey to understand how my hair behaves. I use the same products religiously and have been doing the same wash and go routine for a year. Now they are perfect, and if not I know what I did wrong. THANK YOU SO MUCH! I'm glad I stumbling across this video. Love from Atlanta!

    SOOO helpful!!! I never wear my hair in a wash and go because I feel that it just doesn't come out right! But, now I know why. Thanks!!!

    Thank you so much for this video. I have been trying to perfect my wash and go but my hair takes 3 days to dry completely and by then my roots are puffy. I tried diffusing it but it made it frizzy. I am a 4c low porosity girl. I must get it right. This video is the best. I will save it in my favourite and keep watching it until I get it right. I love all your videos, they are packed with good informations. Thanks😚

    Great video and really good tips! I have low porosity, fine, medium density hair. For me technique has been crucial in getting my hair to get the look that I want and last. More over what products I use actually. I shingle, and even in that if I do a "lazy shingle" my hair will not come out the way that I want it to. I have to start darn near my follicle and apply pressure all the way down the curl bc unfortunately I have unruly disrespectful roots.

      Another thing is someone who has all of the same hair characteristics as you but your hair is dry like the Sahara desert and theirs is oily the way that you apply products will be different too. For me I have to seal every section. I can't just run oil over my hair at the end.

    The hair typing.....I'm not really with that either. I think some naturals have hair that are between two. Like 4a and 3c, some naturals curl pattern may fall in between those two types. It's hard to look at a video or pictures and really "know" how another persons hair is. They know because they are the ones who are dealing with it. Porosity levels are so much more important.

    Thick, low porosity, high density hair. What works best for me is four to six sections, and then subsections for defining with my styling product. I use a leave in or a cream, an oil, then a styling product. I also air dry. I can use a lot of different products on my hair, but jellies and gels give me the best definition. My hair takes forever to dry. I have multi-textured hair, so I have to pick my products carefully and keep a consistent technique because what works for my loose curls won't always work for my tighter ones. I wash with a cowash once a week and with a shampoo twice a month or more if needed. I wear wash and go's almost exclusively.

    All of this is so true and informative. Only thing is I really like the hair typing chart it helped me a lot esp in the beginning even though now I know just because someone has my similar curl pattern doesn't mean I can do what they do and get the same results. I just got a hooded dryer and was wondering if I could use it to dry my wash and go's cause that's all I wear and most times I don't feel like walking around with soaking wet hair so I'll be trying that next wash day. I seriously dislike twist outs and braids too cause like you stated my hair never looks full with those styles and I like my natural curl pattern better than the patterns those styles create. I've also felt like I have trained my hair in a wash and go because at first it was a serious struggle it was always hit and miss now I can pretty much do my routine with my eyes closed and know I'm going to get good results lol.

    #1 Commandment to "Naturalists": To Thine OWN Hair be TRUE! I totally agree that hair is much too personal to take a one-size-fits-a-pattern approach. Like you, I have a 'low' porosity hair-type too and found certain products ineffective because my hair wasn't having any of it. What that meant for me was to be well-acquainted with MY hair, and not make my hair fit-in with whatever beauty-product manufacturers want me to believe. Thank you for sharing YOUR TRUTH with the audience on this video. The natural hair experience is a personal journey and process. I'm learning so much about me and my hair with every 'wash-&-go'! Ms. ECstreet :)

    OK, this is what happened yesterday when I tried a W&go. I divided my hair in 4 sections and I washed and conditioned them separately (so I can say my hair was 100% moisturized) when I was done with that, I started applying (also in 4 sections) the eco styler gel. The result looked good when wet. However, it started to dry out in a very weird way, like frizz and wet at the same time because of the gel. It is also true that I Immediately tried to dry it with a normal (small) blow dryer. The result the day after is a puffy afro hair with little defined curls. It's like a wannabe wash&go. I wonder how I am supposed to go to bed with the eco styler gel in my hair, because it does not dry out immediately. I think the possible mistake was that I did not apply the gel properly. Next time I will try with smaller sections. I've got the feeling that this style won't work on my hair unless I apply the gel almost hair by hair and ah ah... that would take me like the whole day. Not worth the effort and waste of time!! any one had similar experiences?

    great video I just big chopped after transitioning for 14 months. My syle of Choice is wash & gos but I end up having to wet my hair everyday to get my curls to look the way that I want them for the day. I didn't know if that is damaging to my hair by wetting it every day and I also have low porosity so it's always kind of damp I will definitely try sitting under my hooded dryer to lock in My Curls because my hair does get frizzy when I let it air die. any great video you def just gained a new subscriber now I'm on to watch more of your videos so please keep up the awesome videos

    I did a wash and go today and it was so pretty and moisturized for the first 2 hours. Then once it was completely dry the back of my hair turned brittle and dry. (I have low porosity hair) I was so annoyed because it looked so pretty and I have no idea where it went wrong.
