You saved my ass ion having to buy a new computer although I did. That is neither here or there. I lost everything on my Gateway computer after downloading Window 10 (for free) from a Window 7 computer and lost eveything. No boot up, no monitor, nothing. After watching your video on computer repair and analysis of problems, I pulled the bios battery to reset it. I had changed it earlier. Crossed my fingers and fired it up. It came back. First let me say - another GREAT video - Love your work and have seen almost every video you have done that is public. There are 2 things i would add to this one 1- after removing power cord and battery - push and hold the power button 9 seconds (like a hard shut down) - This helps discharge and remaining electrical current still stored in the device and helps prevent static discharge and accidental shock discharge 2- most modern laptops have a 2nd RAM card built inside the laptop UNDER the keyboard - simply follow the steps to remove the keyboard and the RAM slot is (most cases) even with - or - in proximity to the main RAM accessible from below the laptop - visit the manufacturer website and can get schematics and details of the device BEFORE disassembling the device.

@topetoni Either you have the Function Keys set wrong, your Operating System display settings are incorrect, or your motherboard is going. Without seeing thats all I can narrow it down to.

Lots of good info in this lesson. Especially about the LCD inverter. So if the images on the screen are super dim, it means that the LCD inverter is bad. And if you can't see anything on the screen, and the screen is black, it means that the LCD screen is bad. Thanks dude.

Love you man, I like to see a real person demonstrating exactly what to do with a good explanation why to do it. The explanation is relatively important for us who are taking/plan on taking technology classes.
I have some advice on this. Firstly when there is only one RAM-board under the computer, there is usually another under the keyboard. Secondly, to remove the panel above the keyboard (the one with the power key), IF the keyboard is fastened below it, you unsnap the half-cylindrical part from behind the screen, and then you bend up the RIGHT side approx 20-30°, and move the panel up until it is completely loose. And to replace it, always place the LEFT side first. Not sure why that order...
good video, i went to the flea market many times and got me around 4 laptops. them started working on them. learned a huge amount of stuff. iam a laptop repair expert now.
@alex38079 sounds like either your OS is corrupt, or your hard drive died. If you get the BIOS screen, but it doesn't boot further... try reinstallig the OS, if that doesn't work try swapping the hard drive and reinstalling the OS... if that doesn't work... it's dead...

I like how in the beginning you were so set on using the pad of paper to mark screw locations, but near the end of the video they are just scattered across the table.
I want to thank you for this video. Today I successfully changed the hard disk and the keyboard on my HP laptop for almost half the price than what I would have paid at the service center. I was all possible because of this video.
Hi Eli: You provide good information on laptops and how you would tackle some of the repairs. I generally find the RAM and replacing the hard drive the easiest to do. One of the reasons why I like the large desk tops(towers) is that most everything is so much easier to do. Parts are much larger and don’t have to worry so much about screws and other plug-ins. On laptops, you do have to worry about parts fitting. The difficulty is if you have to change the motherboard or screen, then that is the problem and you just should buy another laptop. Companies just don’t make it easy to repair them. I do find that just to add another monitor or keyboard, is to make it much easier and cheaper. You would be surprised is you go to a pawn shop or even a thrift store, you can buy add-on’s relatively cheap and don’t have to worry if the parts fit. Everything is external and works. Most of these places now, even provide a certain time limit and if something does not work, they will take it back for exchange for something else, but no cash back. I have purchased computers that way, dirt cheap and never had a problem and never had to worry how expensive a repair is. I know not everybody can do this. I have a laptop and now all the added things that I have connected to it, it looks like a desktop with external monitors and keyboard and performs just fine. The best thing is that you can always up the memory and if you don’t want win 10, why not put in Linux which is much faster and many programs are free. As a matter of fact, the desktop is coming back again as I see it in stores. This is just a comment I wanted to post.
A note on a few things not covered in the video: 1. Crucial.com is another great memory site. 2. If replacing an IDE drive, note where the missing pin is and the accompanying adapter has a blank there. Make sure you have these aligned correctly and don't force it the wrong direction and bend pins. Also use patience generally and don't force anything pulling or pushing to avoid bending pins or the drive may not work. 3. Overheating - put laptop on top of a cooling pad.
@megamind0420 Most likely your motherboard is dead. Pull the battery out and plug the computer in and see if it will turn on. then try another identical power adapter. If that doesn't work you need a new laptop. You can also try reseating the RAM and the Hard Drive, but it's doubtful that will do anything. Cheers, Eli
I just fixed a laptop bought in 2005. It has been half a year that it is dead. I always suspect that it is the problem of MLB. I did not even take out RAM for basic troubleshooting. And while I watching your video, just want to use this laptop as a learning equipment, do what you said step by step. The laptop comes to its life again, robust. Thanks Eli.

I agree... great video on repairing laptops... all your tips have been dutifully noted... but just one thing... I didn't see anything about the CMOS or Internal battery... I'm sure it's a simple fix as well... but would be nice to see for those who haven't cracked a laptop open yet.

The keyboard segment brought back nightmares of an old Toshiba laptop I took apart. There was the standard three screws under the top plate which are easy to remove, but it wouldn't give. So we found out that there was a screw that was under the motherboard, but to get to it you needed the keyboard to be removed. So we had to go through the trouble of completely gutting the latop just to change the keyboard after someone slammed their fist on it.
I think the hardest thing is the ribbon cables and connectors...they can easily be damaged so take your time. I didn't find laptops that hard because I had already fixed a lot of vcrs and tv's. as to screws he gives some good advice...make sure they go back in the right place. I find this out the hard way with a vcr..put the screws in wrong and you can do some damage.
6 months later a IDE hard drive, a OS, and some confidence I was able to update the memory, install the hard drive, install the OS, and then go thru the painful experience of finding all of the drivers for each component in the laptop. It took a total of 4 hours, a bag of screws, and a persistence to get that laptop going. Best ADVICE "Get Educated, get busy and don't be afraid to try. SIDE NOTE practice on an old laptop that if you don't fix it or break it more you won't be disappointed.
I never use static bands either, never popped anything. But the best thing to do before touching any electrical parts is to touch something metal as that will remove any charge on you. Only once popped a graphics card with static in 15 years of messing with PCs.

Can you make video on repairing laptop problems based on soldering components on the board, changing components like ICs? I really want to know how to repair laptop boards and maybe LCD monitors, what course do you think I should learn? Many laptop main boards can be repaired down to component level but not by the average pc repair shop. It is a little more specialized. More electronics than computer if that makes sense. I do 3 or 4 board level laptop repairs per week and have saved many really nice machines from the scrapyard. Awesome videos Eli.
When we are speaking we generally do just say "laptop"... In a class environment I just want to make sure people don't get confused... a huge percentage of my audience primary language is not english...

Hey Eli,i think You forgot to mention graphics card issue. Cause how to know is the lcd screen went out either graphics card died? Beeps from motherboard maybe may provide a clue,but if there are no beeps,then what?
He talks about eBay as if it doesn't have any kind of customer service. In the UK at least,if you buy something and it isn't as described, or it's faulty then the seller has to pay for return postage and give a refund, and if the seller won't agree, you can contact eBay and they will step in. So, I'm assuming either eBay in america doesn't have this or he just doesn't like eBay/doesn't know how to use it.
I'm so glad to be the Historian who knows how you put a keyboard than doing it. Its so easy when you can go a buy a wireless keyboard put it in the USB drive and it works for about $30.00. Knowing the history about computers is the way for the future

Great video. Curious if you have any ideas. I recently took apart my laptop to clean out the dust and to replace the thermal compound. Have it all back together. It powers on but nothing happens on the screen. I've retried twice I'm sure I am just missing something. Do you have any ideas?
@boxing318 Continue, If the AC adapter is not the problem then it is either your mobo or the power button board connection or PSU (Power Supply Unit) if it is an older model. Newer models have an alternate method of gaining power. Not sure how but they do. I doubt it's CPU overheat because it is not on long enough to overheat but I would check and make sure the fan is spinning properly like Eli mentions in this video. This very well may be the problem. Make sure it's plugged into mobo snug too.
The fun part of fixing a laptop is after someone else has "fixed" it first. I have an Acer with a "blue screen of death" because of a driver problem. It will only boot into safe mode without networks. I tried to do a factory restore only to find the recovery partition is corrupted.
If using a universal power adapter make sure the (1) VOLTAGE is the same as the voltage required for your laptop & make sure that the operational (2)AMPERAGE delivered by the adapter is sufficient, i.e. the same & it can be even be much more than the original adapter. NOTE// It cannot be rated less as it will not meet the power requirements of your laptop.
thermal compound would certainly help if it's baked on but i'd check the fan. it might be not working or heatsink fans might be clogged. i would still replace the compound while i was in there if i was you. might be a good idea to look into shimming the gpu and removing the rubbery stuff from it. that can be BAD for a computer. working on one right now that has a bad gpu not letting it boot. it's preventive maintenance imo..
Yes. Think about it after you messed with it it performs differently. So I would pull it apart and reclean it. Go to radio shack and get arctic silver thermal paste. ITs the best. use no more than half a pea size. You don't to over do it or s to little of the paste. Good luck!!!

My laptop is connected to an additional Monitor, which has always been working but suddenly does not come up and the message on the black screen is VGA Input - No Input signal. Then next is Monitor going to sleep. I've tried using another monitor and i av the same message, I've used another VGA Cable and still the same problem. What really do u think is wrong?
@elithecomputerguy You need one for Bottom Enclosure, Battery Compartment HDD Caddy and mount, Optical Drive WiFi and Modem and WiFi Switch Cards, Keyboard and Speaker Panel w/ Power Button board and touch pad + palm rest and speaker panel ribbons, Mobo, and finally CPU Heat sink and Fan. That's a total of 5 cups. This should help you to use the right screws per component and to not lose any. Hope This helps. You need Solo Cups and a Sharpie.
Is it a CCFL or LED screen? If its CCFL screen then maybe the screen cable has come lose, if you've experienced problems with the screen flickering before when you move the lid then it will be your screen cable, If its a LED type screen then most likely the panel itself is damaged as you would not see the backlight if the screen cable was lose or damaged.

I draw out the bottom of the computer, including each screw hole on the sticky part of contact paper. The screws stick very good and there is no need for tape.
Hi Eli, I want say that your classes are really understandable and user friendly. You are a good teacher. I have an issue with my Toshiba satellite laptop. When I turn it on, it take a lot of time to boot and run and the fan is making a weird noise. Can you please help me understand these issues and tell me how to fix them?Thank you for your help.
On the computer over heating section, I didn't notice anything said about the possibility of dust/pet hair built up between the fan outlet and the copper diffuser On the 3 laptops I have limited experience with, that was a problem with over heating. A pretty much solid layer of the stuff had built up Just an ideal thought for those who have pets/dust/dander. Cleaned mine out and lap top immediately ran much cooler.
Thank you for your effort & your videos, I have watched several of them. Regarding this particular video, those "stickers" as you say around the laptop screen, if you're referring to the rubber pieces, they actually serve a purpose of protecting the screen when the laptop lid is closed, so it's wiser to save and put them back. Also, you mentioned several times this laptop is old/junk, I think even today some people can use that model or even older ones, or can be used for parts on...ebay!
Eli - Great video - have an HP Pavilion dv4 laptop whose screen glows with a low light yet does not display any information, would that be the cable, inverter or LCD?
About the only thing your going to solder or repair would be a dc adapter jack on the system board and most of the new mobo have plug and play not the solder on type. Everything else is replace only. A+ with 8 years experience the days of of soldering connections on laptops is over.
Think you can help me? I have an Acer Aspire 7552g-6061 laptop. For the past few months it has been giving problems. It powers on, but the screen displays nothing. I've heard of some quick fixes, like holding Fn + Esc + Power Button or removing the battery and holding the power button to discharge energy (which I doubt does anything). I even tested out the RAM sticks to see if they were defective. None of these options did anything. (The button combos did seem to work though).
One issue I had while repairing laptops is older ones and replacing the external power supply. If a laptop is holder and is used heavly you may want to buy a PS with a higher wat and amp rating. I had a gaming laptop and some of the components in teh unit lost some resistance. I replaced with spec power supply it would randomly shutdown. I bought a PS out sid ethe specs by about 20% and it worked like a champ.
I have a three year old Overpowered OP-LP3 Laptop. Recently the glue holding the display on failed and the display tilted down applying pressure to the connector. Not wanting to work on it myself I brought it to a shop that reinserted the connector but the display would not light up. The repairman opened up the computer and found burnt components on the motherboard. Problem is we can't find a schematic for this machine in order to identify the failed parts. Do you have any idea with to find a schematic for this Overpowered OP-LP3 Laptop? Andy advise would be greatly appreciated. It's a beautiful machine and I really need to get it working. It's not gold on the ram and pci but I understand what you mean, and it is because the grease on your fingers can short out stuff and make it not very conductible. But I have been working on computers for years and done it so much and never seen anything happen because of it. I wouldn't really worry about it. Just make sure there isn't a ton of stuff on the pins, a quick wipe down with a shirt should fix it if there's anything on it. ^.^
I do have one question, and as trivial as it may seem, I'm gonna ask anyhow. :P If something were to ever happen that you were to somehow not have a carrier case for a part at hand, could you just buy those from the same place you would get the part itself? or is there some other way of getting hold of a new carrier case?
Great teaching tool. It took all the apprehension away. My issue is with the HP Notebook 2000 PC, the bottom two thirds of the screen is obstructed with vertical flickering lines that are constantly changing. top third of screen is okay. Do you have any idea what could be wrong?
Manuals: Usually all the manuals can be found on internet. But don't pay for it. The manufacturers like HP or Dell have them free to download on their webpage. On HP lets say go to -support- -software- type exact model and then on the left column find -manuals- and go for Maintenance and Service Guide. There will be complete service manual how to remove all the parts with pictures.

2. If replacing an IDE drive, note where the missing pin is and the accompanying adapter has a blank there. Make sure you have these aligned correctly and don't force it the wrong direction and bend pins. Also use patience generally and don't force anything pulling or pushing to avoid bending pins or the drive may not work.
3. Overheating - put laptop on top of a cooling pad.

@megamind0420 Most likely your motherboard is dead. Pull the battery out and plug the computer in and see if it will turn on. then try another identical power adapter. If that doesn't work you need a new laptop.
You can also try reseating the RAM and the Hard Drive, but it's doubtful that will do anything.

I just fixed a laptop bought in 2005. It has been half a year that it is dead. I always suspect that it is the problem of MLB. I did not even take out RAM for basic troubleshooting. And while I watching your video, just want to use this laptop as a learning equipment, do what you said step by step. The laptop comes to its life again, robust. Thanks Eli.

The keyboard segment brought back nightmares of an old Toshiba laptop I took apart. There was the standard three screws under the top plate which are easy to remove, but it wouldn't give. So we found out that there was a screw that was under the motherboard, but to get to it you needed the keyboard to be removed. So we had to go through the trouble of completely gutting the latop just to change the keyboard after someone slammed their fist on it.
I think the hardest thing is the ribbon cables and connectors...they can easily be damaged so take your time. I didn't find laptops that hard because I had already fixed a lot of vcrs and tv's.
as to screws he gives some good advice...make sure they go back in the right place. I find this out the hard way with a vcr..put the screws in wrong and you can do some damage.
6 months later a IDE hard drive, a OS, and some confidence I was able to update the memory, install the hard drive, install the OS, and then go thru the painful experience of finding all of the drivers for each component in the laptop. It took a total of 4 hours, a bag of screws, and a persistence to get that laptop going. Best ADVICE "Get Educated, get busy and don't be afraid to try. SIDE NOTE practice on an old laptop that if you don't fix it or break it more you won't be disappointed.

I never use static bands either, never popped anything. But the best thing to do before touching any electrical parts is to touch something metal as that will remove any charge on you. Only once popped a graphics card with static in 15 years of messing with PCs.

Can you make video on repairing laptop problems based on soldering components on the board, changing components like ICs? I really want to know how to repair laptop boards and maybe LCD monitors, what course do you think I should learn?

Many laptop main boards can be repaired down to component level but not by the average pc repair shop. It is a little more specialized. More electronics than computer if that makes sense. I do 3 or 4 board level laptop repairs per week and have saved many really nice machines from the scrapyard. Awesome videos Eli.

Probably not... those things are usually soldered to the motherboard...
He talks about eBay as if it doesn't have any kind of customer service. In the UK at least,if you buy something and it isn't as described, or it's faulty then the seller has to pay for return postage and give a refund, and if the seller won't agree, you can contact eBay and they will step in. So, I'm assuming either eBay in america doesn't have this or he just doesn't like eBay/doesn't know how to use it.
I'm so glad to be the Historian who knows how you put a keyboard than doing it. Its so easy when you can go a buy a wireless keyboard put it in the USB drive and it works for about $30.00. Knowing the history about computers is the way for the future

Great video. Curious if you have any ideas. I recently took apart my laptop to clean out the dust and to replace the thermal compound. Have it all back together. It powers on but nothing happens on the screen. I've retried twice I'm sure I am just missing something. Do you have any ideas?

@boxing318 Continue, If the AC adapter is not the problem then it is either your mobo or the power button board connection or PSU (Power Supply Unit) if it is an older model. Newer models have an alternate method of gaining power. Not sure how but they do. I doubt it's CPU overheat because it is not on long enough to overheat but I would check and make sure the fan is spinning properly like Eli mentions in this video. This very well may be the problem. Make sure it's plugged into mobo snug too.

The fun part of fixing a laptop is after someone else has "fixed" it first. I have an Acer with a "blue screen of death" because of a driver problem. It will only boot into safe mode without networks. I tried to do a factory restore only to find the recovery partition is corrupted.
I deal and see bad techs all over,wannabes with a screwdriver.wow he is tech because he has tools!right?

If using a universal power adapter make sure the
(1) VOLTAGE is the same as the voltage required for your laptop & make sure that the operational
(2)AMPERAGE delivered by the adapter is sufficient, i.e. the same & it can be even be much more than the original adapter. NOTE// It cannot be rated less as it will not meet the power requirements of your laptop.
thermal compound would certainly help if it's baked on but i'd check the fan. it might be not working or heatsink fans might be clogged. i would still replace the compound while i was in there if i was you. might be a good idea to look into shimming the gpu and removing the rubbery stuff from it. that can be BAD for a computer. working on one right now that has a bad gpu not letting it boot. it's preventive maintenance imo..

Yes. Think about it after you messed with it it performs differently. So I would pull it apart and reclean it. Go to radio shack and get arctic silver thermal paste. ITs the best. use no more than half a pea size. You don't to over do it or s to little of the paste. Good luck!!!

My laptop is connected to an additional Monitor, which has always been working but suddenly does not come up and the message on the black screen is VGA Input - No Input signal. Then next is Monitor going to sleep. I've tried using another monitor and i av the same message, I've used another VGA Cable and still the same problem. What really do u think is wrong?
@elithecomputerguy You need one for Bottom Enclosure, Battery Compartment HDD Caddy and mount, Optical Drive WiFi and Modem and WiFi Switch Cards, Keyboard and Speaker Panel w/ Power Button board and touch pad + palm rest and speaker panel ribbons, Mobo, and finally CPU Heat sink and Fan. That's a total of 5 cups. This should help you to use the right screws per component and to not lose any. Hope This helps. You need Solo Cups and a Sharpie.

Is it a CCFL or LED screen? If its CCFL screen then maybe the screen cable has come lose, if you've experienced problems with the screen flickering before when you move the lid then it will be your screen cable, If its a LED type screen then most likely the panel itself is damaged as you would not see the backlight if the screen cable was lose or damaged.

I draw out the bottom of the computer, including each screw hole on the sticky part of contact paper. The screws stick very good and there is no need for tape.

On the computer over heating section, I didn't notice anything said about the possibility of dust/pet hair built up between the fan outlet and the copper diffuser On the 3 laptops I have limited experience with, that was a problem with over heating. A pretty much solid layer of the stuff had built up Just an ideal thought for those who have pets/dust/dander. Cleaned mine out and lap top immediately ran much cooler.

Regarding this particular video, those "stickers" as you say around the laptop screen, if you're referring to the rubber pieces, they actually serve a purpose of protecting the screen when the laptop lid is closed, so it's wiser to save and put them back. Also, you mentioned several times this laptop is old/junk, I think even today some people can use that model or even older ones, or can be used for parts on...ebay!
Eli - Great video - have an HP Pavilion dv4 laptop whose screen glows with a low light yet does not display any information, would that be the cable, inverter or LCD?

About the only thing your going to solder or repair would be a dc adapter jack on the system board and most of the new mobo have plug and play not the solder on type. Everything else is replace only. A+ with 8 years experience the days of of soldering connections on laptops is over.

I have an Acer Aspire 7552g-6061 laptop.
For the past few months it has been giving problems. It powers on, but the screen displays nothing. I've heard of some quick fixes, like holding Fn + Esc + Power Button or removing the battery and holding the power button to discharge energy (which I doubt does anything). I even tested out the RAM sticks to see if they were defective. None of these options did anything. (The button combos did seem to work though).
One issue I had while repairing laptops is older ones and replacing the external power supply. If a laptop is holder and is used heavly you may want to buy a PS with a higher wat and amp rating. I had a gaming laptop and some of the components in teh unit lost some resistance. I replaced with spec power supply it would randomly shutdown. I bought a PS out sid ethe specs by about 20% and it worked like a champ.
I have a three year old Overpowered OP-LP3 Laptop. Recently the glue holding the display on failed and the display tilted down applying pressure to the connector. Not wanting to work on it myself I brought it to a shop that reinserted the connector but the display would not light up. The repairman opened up the computer and found burnt components on the motherboard. Problem is we can't find a schematic for this machine in order to identify the failed parts. Do you have any idea with to find a schematic for this Overpowered OP-LP3 Laptop? Andy advise would be greatly appreciated. It's a beautiful machine and I really need to get it working. electronic repair courses try Saankramer Electronic Magazine System (should be on google have a look ) ? Ive heard some interesting things about it and my mate got excellent results with it.
Seems to me that it is better to tape the small screws to the covers or other computer parts that must go back into place.
It's not gold on the ram and pci but I understand what you mean, and it is because the grease on your fingers can short out stuff and make it not very conductible. But I have been working on computers for years and done it so much and never seen anything happen because of it. I wouldn't really worry about it. Just make sure there isn't a ton of stuff on the pins, a quick wipe down with a shirt should fix it if there's anything on it. ^.^

I do have one question, and as trivial as it may seem, I'm gonna ask anyhow. :P If something were to ever happen that you were to somehow not have a carrier case for a part at hand, could you just buy those from the same place you would get the part itself? or is there some other way of getting hold of a new carrier case?
Great teaching tool. It took all the apprehension away. My issue is with the HP Notebook 2000 PC, the bottom two thirds of the screen is obstructed with vertical flickering lines that are constantly changing. top third of screen is okay. Do you have any idea what could be wrong?
Manuals: Usually all the manuals can be found on internet. But don't pay for it. The manufacturers like HP or Dell have them free to download on their webpage. On HP lets say go to -support- -software- type exact model and then on the left column find -manuals- and go for Maintenance and Service Guide. There will be complete service manual how to remove all the parts with pictures.
Hi what tape do I use for inside my laptop? my keyboard connection very flimsy and needs to be stuck down with some kind of tape and what size would you recommend?
