ACT Reading - Tips, Tricks, and Strategies

- Here are a few quick tips for the ACT Reading section - improve your timing and ability to answer simple questions quickly!

Summary:
1. Focus more on completing the questions that you CAN complete rather than getting every question complete
2. Underline important info (mainly involving characters). Like introductions of characters, interactions between characters, and revelations from characters.
3. Look for the main point of passages and keep track of sentences proving that.
4. In passages about science, keep track of terminology.
5. Substitute in words for questions involving vocab
6. Read passage A then answer questions about passage A. Then do for B then do for C.
7. Don’t be afraid to skip questions that are too long. A lot of questions should be quick to answer.
8. Spend about 8 minutes per passage. Try to answer each question in 30 second.
9. Usually simple answers are right. Usually the point of a sentence is NOT to specify the exact amount of degrees it is outside, for example. Rather, you’d say “it’s cold outside,” not “it’s 39 degrees outside.” This is how the act works usually.

I hope this honestly works. I’m 25 and didn’t finish high school because of the FCAT in Florida. Well I’m here retake the fcat but they no longer have it so I have to take the reading portion of the act and pass with a 19 or higher for this subject in order to get my diploma.
It’s never too late to get your education back up and do what’s right for your life and dreams.

For international student like me, it's really hard to manage the time on the test, and also it's hard to find resources to study on non-native english speaker way but your video gives us general point to solve the questions. By the way I will take ACT test the day after tomorrow for the first time, so I hope your teaching will help me out! Thank you!

Curious if the ACT is demanding you take your videos down? It’s amazing that we’re supporting kids who pay to take their test and are being hit with copyright infringement.
They are. We are trying to fight it though since we do not monetize the videos and we believe that these videos fall under fair use copyright laws being used for educational purposes with no monetization. We are also taking a small enough percent of the tests allotted by copyright law.

for the reading section it can get pretty rushed, especially if you get hung up on a question. Of course you're suppose to skip it, but sometimes one can forget.
its a very small amount of time, especially with the stress about what your score will be and if you'll finish on time or not

Absolutely! You just can't use coloured pens/pencils/highlighters

I took ACT test before, is 45 minutes 75 questions

the english test is not that bad i remeber i had a 18 on it and if you do a lot of practice problems you start to notice patterns and stuff and i took a practice one and i’m averaging 25-28
