  • Sitting on a bench and watching the world go by on a busy Durango downtown afternoon. Me talking about how to treat these insecure dogs. I am still not doing much obedience downtown because we are working on improving their state of mind. At home they are confident so that is where we work the obedience. I don't want to just MAKE them do behaviors, I want to help them become more confident so that they can actually ENJOY doing behaviors, even in a place that may make them nervous. Overtime this approach will help create confident AND obedient dogs in all environments, not just suppressed obedient dogs. (At home we play, have dog socials, go on off leash hikes, and do other activities that these two have grown to love AND work obedience at the same time, therefore keeping them feeling good. By the way, when I say "feeling good", I mean confident, not coddled.)

so interesting how the man who asked to pet margie agreed to what you instructed about petting her and then completely did the opposite! humans are harder to train than dogs sometimes. and how she did seem more alert and nervous after the interaction, going from laying down to sitting up and looking more tense. really illustrates how pets aren't universally rewarding to many dogs. my heart went out to her when her little eyes bugged out but she handled herself so well. reminds me to just tell people "no" if i'm working on training in a situation where my dog is already a bit nervous. it can be hard to react that way in the moment when someone is already walking up to you though

Yes, good observation. And I agree with the end of your statement as well. It can be hard. I always tell the owners to do their best. When I do have a dog in training with me I will sometimes really firm with that, but then sometimes I let it happen because it’s better for it to happen with me than the dog owner at this point in her life. As you say, people are not always good listeners and they’re not going to do what you asked, so it’s helpful for me to see what she actually does do if it happens.

She didn't instruct, she gave a vage suggestion of where the dog liked pets. She didn't say the dog doesn't like head pats as well. When the suggestion was repeated, making it more clear, he followed it. Saying "you can pat her but only if it's under the chin" would be an instruction. It wasn't clear how important that piece of information was. Not everyone processes things the same way, he didn't seem badly intended.

Don't people attack you, because using of prong and ecollar? E-collar is banned in my country and honestly I am bit scared to wear both prong and ecollar at the same time, because I was already attacked when using a prong on my dog. People literally look at you like you hate your dog. It's terrible. They all obsessed with food as a reward 😒.

Not as much as you would think. People see happy dogs doing well and that are very well cared for. If people do comment I do my best to
educate and I never get defensive. They are legal tools and I use then proudly and never abuse the tool. I also try to mention that anything can be abused - even food (how many obese dogs are out there??) Also, the freedom an Ecollar provides (esp for where I live and what want to do with their dog) is unsurpassable in such a short time.
