Some political people today characterize this era as "terrible". In fact, there was a great deal about this era and into the 50's that was wonderful. This film illustrates a time when America truly was great - as were its people. Thank goodness for such newsreel style productions of the time to prove the fact to today's audience.
@@armandofernandez8257 No, Armando. The reverse is true. We Anglos built and gave name to this sun drenched, palm studded urban paradise. It's YOU PEOPLE, with all your gangs, crime, trash, graffiti and decay that really fucked up this beautiful thing the whites CREATED from a desert. Let's put things in perspective here.
@@daleandrews9356 If only you knew the true story..which you couldn't possibly because last I checked you weren't even born into the 1950's let alone the 1850's to say anything. Don't compare yourself to your ancestors, they suffered or didn't, not you.
On December 6, 1949,Sgt. Finis Brown, in charge of the Black Dahlia investigation since DAY ONE, was called before the 1949 Grand Jury and testified to various aspects of his ongoing investigation.
You have to keep in mind that this film is a promotional piece for the Los Angeles business community of that era; (a rather obvious and heavy handed effort at that, at least to the eyes of anyone looking at it in 2021). But even if it had been straight reporting, it would still look very good to those of us here in the third decade of the 21st century.
The films are transferred full frame 16:9. We leave it up to the editors to scale back the x axis to 4:3 with pillar bars, or expand the y axis for a full frame 16:9 with correct aspect ratio. We leave that option open for editors instead of choosing for them.
At that time California WAS under Spain. Mexican Independence did not come until after the Independence struggle. That began in 1810 and lasted for a decade.

You are talking about ur race right? The white race, cause for the Mexican race you people came and Fucked everything up.
@@armandofernandez8257 Here we go again.
It truly was great. So much prosperity and positive outlook. And look: no protests or riots!

California was truly golden then. What a tragic loss.
It’s a cesspool now. So sad
It used to be Mexico until the evasion of Mexico by the United States
Wow! all so beautiful back then! Wishing I had a time machine!
Why didn’t they show any gangbangers?
Great video. What a time to be in LA!
I like this video. I could imagine if I was around at that time and saw this.
Thank you for this great video. Really enjoying it.
Ah, the beach. Where "bodies receive beneficial contact from the sun." Those were the days.
Wow, the year I was born. Yeah some parts have turned into overcrowded crap holes, but not all.
Most are overcrowded crap holes. And some of those crap holes are starting to sprout up in North OC.
I congratulate you for being born in such a beautiful place 👍

great video thank you!
Umm... The aspect ratio is incorrect, should be 4:3.
Wow. That's Steve Reeves at the beach around 29:15.
Denizen’s of Los Angeles loved their city and took care of it. Now most don’t care as much and aren’t as proud.
You can’t blame Angelenos. We just live here. You have to look at the policy makers. Average residents do not determine outcomes of large cities.
Love this video!!
See what happens when you stick to the rules. Good gravy did we screw it all up.
At3:13faced with California granite behind the Colin age at top is the county jail, affording spectacular views for prisoners.
I'll bet those citrus groves are suburbia now.
California sure was beautiful back then. Today you couldn't pay me to live there, and N.Y.C. is even worse.

I was 3 years old in 1949
What movie were they making?
0:45 - Mt. San Jacinto, looking south from SR 62 near Pierson Blvd.
17:44 - Warner Bros. in Burbank
Nice...
what happened?
Ted Kennedy's 1965 immigration act.
Gobbersmack Don't dismiss Jacob Javits' role in the 1965 immigration act....he was a major proponent of it.
Liberal politics gone out of control.
Dustin : What happened?... .... GREED HAPPENED! That's what happened!
Diversity.....sancuary cities...mass illegals.democratic ruled......communism..greed.china...
wish I was there
I hate how you stretched the 4:3 footage to 16:9. You have no respect for aspect ratio.

And Just Seventy Years Later It Is Now A Giant S**T Hole.
Now Los Angeles is a cesspool.
that's me in there
UCLA housing at 3:50?
McArthur Park doesn't look like that now.
What's with that cute face at :05? Surely not a face from the 40s. More like a late 60s or early 70s Kodak girl ad.
Color check frame inserted later.
1:17
At 0:25 I had to turn this off, the quality is not worthy. It would be nice however to view this in its entirety and enjoy doing so!!
Sucks for you. It’s a tremendous film. The film is for sale, hence the less than ideal quality presented for free here.
UCLA! UCLA!UCLA!!!
You couldn't pay me enough to live in this god forsaken hellhole!
Oh shutup you idiot..you hate life anywhere I can tell
Good. Maybe go to Kenya then.
I don’t think there’s anyone in Los Angeles hoping you’ll move in, so no worries.
Not under the flag of Spain,it was under the flag of MEXICO,wich then u the white race came and took from them.
Mexico, a European derived country, controlled California for a whole 25 years...a footnote in its history.
Why don't you fight for it back? Coward.
