This was the only mmo I used to play religiously, the concept of using character ability (Flight, running superspeed, acrobats) to roam around the openworld was so much fun. It was such a unique experience, I always wonder why not more mmo adopt this. Some mmo have mounts and stuff but was limited in what you could do. The dev behind DC universe were the goat for making it in 2011.

Making the content free was a real class move. I've been playing for quite some time and would only purchase a month at a time since I didn't really play enough to justify yearly or a couple of months worth of memberships. Now I can just log in do a couple of raids and have a good time. I definitely recommend trying this game if you want a simple but fun MMO.

    Fun fact regarding DCUO.
For much of the game whenever playing as a villain you can make believe that you're only brutalizing people, with the occasional setting police on fire. Any illusion people have of this ends whenever they assist the sinestro corps in the later segments of the levelling experience because every npc you beat is a green lantern and the defeat animation for the green lanterns is their rings announcing that they are deceased.
DCUO doesn't tend to pull punches on stuff like that with multiple missions where you outright kill people or at the very least introduce them to war crimes such as:
    Mustard Gas
    Forcibly overdosing people on drugs
    Acid
    Setting people on fire
Tying people up and then setting them on fire (The setting people on fire are joker missions)
    Torturing students
Draining the life force of people
    Overloading life support systems
    and much, much more.
If you at any point feel like these aren't adequately evil enough for your character DCUO has you covered because in their chaos ridden lore they saw fit to include people contemplating suicide at the top of some buildings. this is one of a few random world events such as discovering wandering hero npcs/villains, people at atms and people trying to break into buildings or hack atms.
For the villain's interaction with these people you can literally kick them off of the building.
DC Universe's main goals in their world at first were allowing players to feel like heroes and villains, and they achieved this through an absolutely massive number of customisation options for players of all levels, and also in-world interactions.
For example of the customisation options here are a few of my characters in the game:
    imgur.com/a/IuZIYGU
Whilst in many other mmos you start off with basically nothing and have to get an interesting looking character through gear as you level due to DCUO having the core rule that you're supposed to look like a hero or villain from the start that means you can get really cool, and fun designs from the tutorial or just early levelling. For example of that I have a screenshot of a character who is designed exclusively from the tutorial, and basic powers, weapons and abilities that 100% of players have access to at the bottom of the list in the link above.
And the best part of this, which not a lot of mmos can actually say is that my main is a free to play character, I got to CR 366 without paying for anything, and everything she's wearing both in that outfit and her more commonly worn outfit is free to play, and fairly easily acquireable by anyone. in fact the only pieces of armour she's wearing which are difficult to get are the talon lord boots, and the chest piece. the Chest piece is a possible drop from a raid, and the boots are possible drops from a multitude of bosses in the game, everything else she's wearing is easy to get though.

The only MMO I ever really played is SWTOR, I started DCUO twice, but, for a lack of time, only got barely past the tutorial.
Would you recommend it today, as is?

    • @DarraghMontgomery
      @DarraghMontgomery Рік тому +3

@@finnb2318 It really depends on what you're looking for. DC Universe is on the easier side of MMOs for sure, which means a lot of its content including late game content is more open to lower skilled players, with me only having issues with 1 alert (4 person lategame content) and 1 raid which both required a large degree of teamwork and communications, and I was playing randoms at the time.
In Swtor content is not the hardest that MMOs can offer but it is more difficult than DCUO (I'm thinking about Eternity Vault for instance)
That's not saying DCUO can't be difficult but rather that it doesn't feel like it's difficult whenever the difficulty ramps, so it has a different play atmosphere.
Additionally Swtor has one of the best stories in MMOs released at the time, especially on the dark side so the DCUO story naturally doesn't compare since it's more comparable to Runescape or WoW which didn't have a consistent, over arching story outside of regional stories, and advanced stories for a long time.
However one thing t hat DCUO allows you to do much better than Swtor is it allows you to create a character, and make it feel truly unique. They basically put more effort into their customisation options than anything else in the game, and now you can effectively make a character for any theme, for instance I have a friend who made an ankylosaurus themed character and I genuinely cannot think of another mmo where you'd be able to do that since Ankylosaurs have never been the focus of DCUO, nor can I think of them ever appearing in any other MMO in a major way other than possibly Ungoro but I mainly remember Krush and Moshi from there.
You can make characters who are thematically egyptian gods, complete with the animal heads thanks to a recent expansion, you can have characters themed after atlantis, including having eels swimming around them, you can have green, yellow and red lanterns with thematic powers, you can be a thrall Starro if you want, since there is a multitude of Starro themed cosmetics and he basically never shows up in the games.
So in response to the question, is DCUO worth revisiting? Yeah I'd say so, whenever push comes to shove it can be really fun, and allows you to express what you want to be, and how you want to present your character to a degree of freedom that I've only really seen one other MMO match.
Additionally if you want to retry it, and you're worried about not having the time then you can add me on steam and we can go through it together which should speed things up.

My buddy and I played this game for years starting at launch. I started off as a Controller and he stuck with a healer. I eventually switched to an Ice Tank and we did tons of raids and such with our League. The PVP was also extremely fun! But unfortunately we did quit eventually. Too much time was being spent on the game and we found it annoying to try and lead a group of people through Raids (who weren’t in our League) when we were constantly the last two alive during a difficult boss fight. But we still had a ton of good times with this little gem! We made some good friends with some very nice people.

Funnily enough I only started this game a few months back at a really low point where I just needed some mindless fun- and boy was it mindless and fun. Slinging around in some half mocking costume spamming the same few buttons to murder everything in my way will always be great, and the main story is just so campy, convoluted and absolutely iconic. Not knowing a single thing about this game, I didn’t even realize there were other people in my server until I was a month in. A very rude awakening considering j always thought the “npcs” in this game have weird ass names.

This game and gotham imposters took up my time a lot when I was a kid, back in 2k11 I used to play it extensively, to the point where I'd be super sleepy in school the next day sometimes. Though, I controlled myself and only played after school and stopped 2 hours before I would need to go to bed.
I was always jealous of the people with cool costumes and pets, being I was just a kid in middle school. great vid, brought back some memories. Gonna send this to my friends.

This game is so nostalgic to me. From my 13 year old edgelord self creating the coolest character known to man with the trademark "Xx_" names to my 16 year old self trying to recreate characters I liked at the time and getting upset that the names were already taken.
And now I am regrettably playing my edgiest of edgelords and hating 13 year old me

I still remember my old Werewolf Nature build from years ago, the PvP was complex enough for it to feel like a 2D fighting game and it was fun as hell. The dealbreaker that made me quit when I came back to it recently this year was when they made transforming into a dog require the meter to be filled first, I friggin' loved harmlessly trolling people with that.

man i used to play the absolute SHIT out of this game when i was in middle to high school. i used to be up on endless nights just grinding the shit out of the game until i reach the max power level of this game, buy a new superpower that they added, and would always try out every single seasonal event that they would pull for us to play on. I met so many great people on this game and it was just an all out fun experience for me but honestly i can not lie that the game is very much outdated based on the gameplay mechanic and also some of the models. honestly if the devs were the amp up the graphics and rework a good chunk of the mechanics this game could possible become popular again to play.

Remember this game being at its peak when 100 skillpoints was a major achievement. Amazing game but I've tried redownloading and playing on console and pc with no luck I have no idea why sometimes it loads and sometimes it crashes after loading screen. I played my old nostalgic game called flyff as they've released it as a browser game but I can't play it like I use too hours upon hours just to level once. Now I'm enjoying guild wars 2 and loving how fluent the game feels, I doubt I'll play another mmo until ashes of creation comes out.

I played this pretty hard-core for about 8 months before my wife and I began cohabitation (about 9 years ago). Met some really Good people from across the country, and really had a great time. Once my life moved towards beginning a family I had less and less time, then one day I logged in, and found my clan Disbanded only to realiE years had passed. I reached out to the folks on PSN, but never heard back. Maybe I left them sour for basically disappearing for 2 years, but I'll still find myself thinking of Harley (guy's actual name) and his wife: good fun, warm folks from out in the mid west. My man Reaper will always get my respect because he was very serious about the game and our clan, but also extremely serious that no one know his real name. On top of that, hommie could only play when he had enough money to charge up his pre paid cellular phone plan, because he had hot wired his phone to tether his internet connection to his Playstation, and that was the only way he could afford internet somewhat consistently.
Man, good time and good people.

I played this years ago, when Sony still ran it. I thought it had died off, like so many other games did, but I saw it was still running because of a Steam ad. So of course I downloaded it and got back into it. I wanted powers that you either had to purchase the DLC from Steam to get as a bundle, or you can buy them individually with cash store bucks. This of course means you have to fork over actual money, but that's ok. I'm disabled so I don't get a lot of entertainment otherwise.
I like this game a whole lot, though I think, like the comics themselves, the structure of the incredible multiversal mishmash they've wound up with is rather close to imploding. The House of Legends is particularly weird, seeing heroes AND villains from too many different universes is rather mind bending. I warped to the old Watchtower just to take a break from the chaos. It's mostly the same as it once was, just the crowds of bored max-level heroes battling each other in much of the station is both nostalgic and frustrating at the same time. I'd swear it was some of the same max-levels I remembered from years ago, still beating the crap out of new max-level fourteen year olds who thought they were badass.
I'm not badass at all, and frankly, I don't like PvP much. I was nostalgic for the days of playing a speedster, running up and down the sides of buildings and launching myself towards the rooftops of the next building over, then made another toon with a green lantern ring. No game I've seen so far has done a power ring right. The constructs are generally lame, and you can do more damage with brawling combos than you can with the supposed "most powerful weapon in the Universe". All that, and they don't let you wear a GL symbol on your chest. It is to weep. Sigh.
And where did they hide the fricken speed boost key? Is it Num Lock? Where the hell IS my Num Lock key, anyway? I don't think my keyboard HAS one.

I wanted to like this game. I really did. I was so hyped for this game that the minute it was offered, I jumped at the chance for a lifetime sub. But once the novelty of the game wore off, the premise behind gaining your powers - they belonged to a future hero/villain that you mistakenly acquired from an 'exobyte' - was kind of insulting. It didn't impact gameplay at all, but at least in "City of Heroes" you could at least describe your character's origin. For DCUO, it was almost like saying, "Oh, you have an original backstory on how your hero/villain got their abilities? Well, it ain't good enough to be a part of the DC Universe. You were just a random nobody who was in the right/wrong place at the right/wrong time."

It's been a long time since I played this game; I only started thinking about it since rewatching some of the old trailers for it and some notificatiosn on my youtube page. I remember loving it and the only reason I stopped playing was due to not being able to keep up with all the equipment needed to play some of the Alerts and Raids after I reached Lvl 30 for all of my creations; that and I never really bothred with continuing to buy some of the dlc that came out, stopping at Battle for Earth. I think I could replay it again but not like I used to since I have other games and I might run into the same problem I did before even with all of this new content that may be there now.
