Growing up, my family had Thanksgiving together. All thirty eight of us!!! Plus, a few unexpected friends that cousins would always randomly bring! 😂 It was all in our small four room apartment. It was wonderful and no one cared that all the furniture was pushed to the walls and three huge folding tables became the main rooms!! 😂 My parent’s bedroom was the coat closet! And the kids ate on the floor in my bedroom, picnic style. We had one small bathroom and everyone took turns! 😂 And everyone remembers only the love and laughter!!! This video brought me back!!!! I do not have a large home, but remembering those “tiny days” are a joy I’ll always treasure. The more the merrier here too!!! ❤️ I wish your sister every happiness!!! See you tomorrow!
Cobbling together a dining table: We took a door off its hinges and laid it across a low dresser and it worked just great. We had room for about 10 people to sit around the table. Used a twin sheet as a tablecloth. Since we had so little room other than the table, we made the rest of the event happen outside with a hike at a nearby park. Very memorable Thanksgiving and still mentioned now, 30+ years later.
I often times host Christmas Eve for my large family. It is a lot of work preparing for the event. But I do enjoy it. And if you take those steps ahead of time to organize the space and flow, it all works itself out! The host and/or hostess has a much better time enjoying the event too! Happiest of holidays! 🎄♥️
Lots of great tips Hilary, especially about rearranging furniture- I’d never think about moving my sofa but it makes a lot of sense when space is tight !
When I was younger and we had big family gatherings the kids were always responsible for greeting the guest and taking their coat. We put it on mom and dads bed. When they were ready to leave we would ask what their coat looked like and we went to find it. If we brought the wrong one they laughed and thought it was cute and said try again 🤣
Great tips. Thanks for reminding us that the most important thing is making TIME to spend with others. That goes a long way in making them feel appreciated. The SPACE can be sorted out. Thanks for sharing. Have a lovely day 😊.
Hilary, you are amazing! With 4 kids you manage to host a beautiful shower in your home and remain calm. You are an aspiration to many of us who love your you tube channel! Blessings to you ❤
Hillary.....you will not believe this. My in laws lived in a 3 room house. My sons grandma insisted on having all the holiday meals Easter, Birthdays, Thanksgiving and Christmas in a three room house. Also Grandpa didn't want to eat anywhere but his own house. It was all he knew. You could fit only 2 people in the kitchen or you could not open the refrigerator. She only had 2 feet of counterspace and a small table to lay out buffet style. The one room for gathering had a drop leaf table with extension leaves and we added folding chairs around it. They also had a bed room with one foot on each side and 4 feet at the foot of the bed. Oh yes a small bathroom you could stand up and sit down in. Back to the best part she loved well and much. Family was everything to her. The size of someone's house is of no consequence. Having a gathering place and food to eat is sufficient to create memories and a loving legacy. We would enter and in three feet sit down at the table the entire visit. We would take turns filling our plate you could not even pass by another person in the hall. Then we took down the table help clean up. Use the chairs to visit for an hour. My husband wants to celebrate with his mother now but she is in heaven now... I have a bigger home one year I hosted funny story my husband mother carried in the entire Thankgiving meal so we had 2 turkeys, 2 mashed potatoes 6 pies many side dishes. The 6 healthy accompaniments I prepared never saw the light of day. She and my husband were inseparable as soon as she arrived. Never a dull moment. I prayed the whole time she was there, as I prepared everything for the three days prior. My goal going in was to show the family a special time. The look on my sweet husbands face showed we understood each others needs without talking. Love was in the house. It is easy to love people that think just like us. Christ calls us to love our mother in law even when she carries in two six foot wide boxes full of duplicates items you just made. By the way we only had 5 people in attendance. I had china ready but was vetoed by grandma to use paper plates instead. Hosting is something I excel at. I have hosted a party for 450 to celebrate my mother in law and father in laws 65 wedding anniversary party many years after our duplicate Thankgiving. So be careful what you wish for. The woman liked to cook and we miss her. Hope you see the humor and significance in my sharing this. Gods grace is sufficient for all things. Even family. It's not the size of ones house it's the size of ones heart.
Hello Hillary- I am so glad you brought this topic up. My husband and I were just talking about the subject of hospitality-in many ways we’re losing our desire to be hospitable and your vlog can help encourage people to have a get together even if they don’t have much room. Be well and enjoy this time of year as we embark on celebrating Christmas and most importantly our Savior’s birth.
Hi Hilary....great tips today. Back when our large extended family used to all celebrate every occasion together there were always more than 20 to feed/seat....so the host/hostess rented folding chairs which was very convenient. No stress trying to store 16 extra chairs until needed and they were all the same. The few extra dollars this added to the party expenses were more than worth in stress reduction.
Your right no one really notices how you have rearranged everything and the food is the most important lots of fruit veggies, two crockpots of food and I fill both sides of the sink with ice and put the drinks in there as well and it saves space too. Both of my events this year turned out great and I hosted them both. Excellent job honey!!!!
A great video and I remember you did a similar one in the past. I remembered you saying it doesn't need to be perfect and people are just happy to be invited which is 100% true. A relaxed hostess is essential ! I was recently at an engagement party (I catered most of the food) and the hostess was a wreck despite having all kinds of help. It made the first hour of the function awkward. She told me later she just hates hosting things and is so disorganized that it makes her extremely nervous. If someone falls into that category maybe take advantage of a private room in a local restaurant and let someone else do everything so you just have to show up:) Thanks for filming!
Looks like the shower went off wonderfully. You are always so gracious & calm, im sure the guest of honor & everyone enjoyed themselves completely, i hope you did also. Wonderful tips! 💝💝
Thank you for this video! Exactly what I needed to hear (“people just want to be invited, they’re not looking at your space thinking it’s tight”). We’re hosting an annual Christmas cookie party next weekend, and having lots of people in our small home. I always get concerned about people thinking our house is so small. 🤦🏻♀️ You’ve given me lots of great tips to prepare better this year!
We have a plastic banquet table that we can adjust the legs so we use that for short table for the kids. That really helps! Leaf tables are great also!!!
We just hosted 20 for Thanksgiving and we incorporated many of these ideas. We do have a large table but when all the leaves are in it goes through the doorway from the dining room into the living room and looks really awkward but we do it anyway. We borrowed a table and set of chairs from our church to put in the living room right next to the other table. We moved a desk out of the dining room into the kitchen so we had more space around the seating area and it gave us another place to put food in the kitchen. We separated the chaise from the rest of our sectional and put it in the basement to open up the living room more. I wasn't sure about how it would work out but everyone had a good time even though most just had to sit at the table because there was no where else to go. But we ate and played games and it was fine.
These are absolutely great tips Hilary for hosting or entertaining! I love hosting special events and I always rearrange the furniture to make sure I have enough space too! Thanks for sharing!💖💖
Great tips. We love to entertain. I'm having my student's' piano recital here, in a couple of weeks. Two days later, we are having a Christmas party for our church Choir. I always figure that if you're cleaning your house for one party, you might as well have another one. We ran out of time, this year, to have a neighborhood Christmas party.
Great video Hilary! Greetings from California. We have a smallish house and over the years have always hosted get togethers, showers, parties and Thanksgivings and although we use our patio space and yard if the weather permits we have always just loved opening our home to friends and family. ❤️
When we entertain, I have to remind myself to accept help from guests who volunteer their services. It makes them feel useful and familial and helps everyone to feel comfortable lingering for conversation.
Hi Hilary! I’ve been curious, do your kids have child locks on the door (just the toddler) or are they able to get out of bed/their room whenever they wake up? How do you keep them from getting up and roaming and trashing the house too early in the morning or in the night? What do you do if they wake up before you do? What do your kids do during quiet time? Thanks! I love your home style and your personality! You motivate me a lot and give me lots of ideas! Thanks!
We don’t have locks, and rarely are they up before me. If they do, they always come to me in bed so it’s never been an issue. During quiet time they nap or read or do something independently like coloring, puzzles, etc.
I am so exited you are doing vlogmas!!! I enjoy watching your videos so much!! Love all the great tips you give for those who live in small homes. I live in a ranch house about 1300sq ft in NY built in 1954, I love it because it’s very cozy. Sometimes I feel like I need more space with 6 people (which includes 2 BIG teenage boys!😂) but what i really need is to declutter😂 and have only what I need! 🤦🏻♀️ I love tips and watching how you arrange and manage your home. Helps me see it’s totally possible to live in a small home and continue to love it… even while the kids are going!! Thanks for all your amazing videos!!!❤️❤️❤️ oh and i love that New England Ralph Lauren Christmasy look as well!!!🎄❤️🥰
@@KristenKing- Hi! Yes, my older ones share a room we have in our basement. The basement was a finished apartment when we moved in, so the have a Galley bedroom and bathroom for themselves. My 11yr old son and 8yr old daughter each have a room next to ours.
I get so excited to host. Sadly, COVID is still bad in my community, so we are limiting guests. Only my parents will be coming for Christmas day, but we will have fun! I still enjoy all the details of hosting no matter how many people come.
Hilary these were excellent darling. That is what I do when I do a gathering such as when my daughter graduated from HS I gave her a grad party and it was perfect and I re arranged everything. Also for mamas celebration of life was incredible with even a piano player and guitar player
Lots of great tips Hilary, our house is very small, we move furniture, shimmy things around even if we had to sit with a tray on our laps, i know we are so much more fortunate than so many people who don’t have a roof over their heads, so I’m very grateful that i get to spend that time with my family Thankyou didn’t realise you were doing vlogmass Hilary, love watching, at the moment i appreciate these vlogs so much I’m busy moving my mother into a care home and it’s hard on my heart and i feel guilt also but i know it’s the right thing for her safety so at the end of the day love watching your vlogs
Such great tips! What you said is so true (except for my mother-in-law, she judged and was mean 😢, but- that reflected her). Hospitality is written about in the Bible! So, it is important.
It was brunch so we had 3 quiches, chicken salad on croissant, soup, coffee cake, muffins, fruit, an iced coffee punch (so good), mimosas, and a few other things! It was a combined effort ❤️
Love this! We have always had a small home and love entertaining. People do not care...they just want to come. :) I had a guest tell me they couldn't imagine going anywhere else for Christmas Eve because i had a "good set up" for it. We have just under 1500 square feet, but I pack the guests in anyway lol. ;)
We have a cape cod small home alot like yours. Our extended family on my husband's side has grown.....21 people many of small children who will run around. We've always took turns through the adults having it our homes. We can't anymore :( made me so sad. But we are in the market of looking for a bit bigger of a home mainly because our family is growing.
If you still have a desire to host maybe you can have one or two families over at a time so you can still give them that special time? Or invite over a neighbor or family from the church ❤️
I wish we could but government have told us to restrict our gatherings and family get togethers to stop the spread of the new COVID variant 😱, one day it will be normal but for us not right now...

I love this! This is how I grew up as well!!!
This is a wonderful story of your memory. I felt as though I was there with you
Love it!! Amen, being together is what’s most important ✨
This is wonderful!
This was such a wonderful memory to share....it brought tears to my eyes! ❤

No matter the size of your home, entertaining is opening up your heart to friends and family. Blessings to you and your family this holiday season
Hospitality is about the size of your heart not the size of your home! Great tips for hosting. Blessings, Hilary!!
Your hair has grown so much in a year... Hair is really pretty and shiny.
You are so right! Most people are not critical of your home. They are just so delighted to be invited.

What a fun idea!
My daughter had a baby shower outside this past summer and set up tents! It rained all day, but it was a cozy arrangement! ❤️
Great tips. Thanks for reminding us that the most important thing is making TIME to spend with others. That goes a long way in making them feel appreciated. The SPACE can be sorted out. Thanks for sharing. Have a lovely day 😊.
I loved your "stick it in the bathtub" trick! You make the whole house cozy and welcoming! Hugs from Missouri 🤗 ❤

Thanks for these tips and reminders. I agree that a stressed host can ruin the experience. Lots of prep is the way to go!

I have a table that seats 8, so I usually invite 6 other people. That is for dinners. If we have families, we make different arrangements.

Do few things well. That’s golden advice.
great tips. Being organized and ready is key. And yes, not looking frazzled or stressed out :)
Again, Making it simple to do anything, good job Hillary! This makes me want to throw a get together this weekend.
Great tips and inspiration as always Hilary ! Blessings to you !
Wonderful tips. You set your home up beautifully to accommodate all your guests.
Thanks for these tips! What a cozy home! I love your hospitality. 😀 loving Vlogmas
It's not about the space but the people live in!!
Keeping it simple is one of my favorite tips

Did you have a link for those taper candles? I can't get the space under the title to open (has youtube changed things?) so am asking here. Thanks!
Great tips Hillary, thanks!!!

Such great great ideas we have a smaller home and my husband always wants to move but I absolutely do not. So I will use some of these tricks.
You gave some great ideas for entertaining. I don't think many of us have a humongous house so thinking outside the box is a great idea.

What a nice video on entertaining. I had a studio apartment and hosted Christmas. Was a fun time.
Such great tips, Hilary! Thanks for sharing!
Thank you for the tips. I learned a few that I had not thought of.
Thanks so much! What was in your menu?
It was brunch so we had 3 quiches, chicken salad on croissant, soup, coffee cake, muffins, fruit, an iced coffee punch (so good), mimosas, and a few other things! It was a combined effort ❤️
Fantastic tips. I don't think I have anything matching in my home and you are right no one cares!!!
Great ideas!
Hillary you have done a absolutely gorgeous job decorating your home!
Fantastic tips Hilary!!! Looks like everyone had a wonderful time 😊.

Great video! Wonderful tips! Absolutely take the chance and host you'll be glad you did!
You food always looks yummy.
The kitchen in my first home was so small that I would use the ironing board for extra bench space when we had guests 🤣🤣🤣
Use what you’ve got!
What is the Vlogmas in this video?
