- A living donor liver transplant is a surgical procedure in which a portion of the liver from a healthy living person is removed and placed into a cirrhotic patient. The donor’s remaining liver as well as the transplanted portion regrows to their normal size within 6-8 weeks.
Living donor liver transplants are very common in India and they offer an alternative to waiting for a deceased-donor liver transplant. This is a very safe surgery and there is minimal to no risk to the living donor.
