I don’t think anyone meant to imply he was innocent, he’s made mistakes like all of us. His relationship with drugs is what started the ball rolling towards disaster. I understand he has been cultivating relationships with his children. We all deserve some grace.

My last concert: El DeBarge at Bethesda Jazz Supper Club in Maryland. He brought the house Down. Me: Front Seat and I sang along and acted a complete fool fan; howEVUH, he came to me and reached down to hug me 😩😭he smelled so good and it was a GENUINE hug 🤗 - not flimsy - most magical moment in MY life ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

Yea, Moma Debarge could sing lights out. I saw video of her in church with everybody singing. Wonderful. Im clean n sober 3 years next month. Im so happy El is also living and peaceful. Godbless

I was really impressed when I saw El DeBarge live a few years ago . His voice is EXACTLY the same as on record if not better. He can also still hit those notes flawlessly.

Years ago I read an article in a magazine in which the interviewer asked if there were other's at home with musical aspirations. Bobby replied that he had a little brother at home in Grand Rapids that could do everything that he can do vocally, and even some things even he couldn't do. He apparently was talking about Eldra. :)

@@eldradebarge7002 I wish I had it but time has passed and I never saved it. I actually saw someone else on a Prince blog prince.org/msg/8/283512 also mention it when comparing Bobby & El's voices. I know it was from one of the many magazines that I used to purchase like Black Beat, Right-On etc. at a news stand in NYC in the middle to late 70's. :). I was a young lad then. :)
It came back to me when I actually read the Kept one's (volume 2) when Bunny said the same thing pretty much on page 125 when she talked about the adlibs, and on page 70 when she said that El had a gift just as prolific as Bobby's and that El was hesitant at times to embrace it because he didn't want to be compared or considered equal to his big bro.
Also on page 71 when Bunny said that Bobby respected his little brother as much as his little brother respects him. Also on page 95 when Bunny said that although El's voice was not as strong as Bobby's because of a pinched nerve, but he was still able to reach every note that Bobby did but it took more effort. Greg Williams book also mentioned that El was just as prolific as Bunny and Bobby vocally. :)
When my friends do comparison's whether sports, music etc, I tell them when it comes to family people shouldn't be surprised at members sound alike because they are indeed family. :) The biggest difference that I've always noticed as someone who has an eclectic taste in music is that most of the people who I would play a Debarge or El Debarge song who don't know who he is and are listening to it for the first time, or who've heard it before and didn't know who the artist is; think it's a woman singing. :) That in itself is mentioned as a compliment because it's a gift from Yahweh.
Where is with Bobby he sing's with a beautiful tenor and has an awesome falsetto range, but you know it's a man singing. This to me is what Bobby was referring to when he said that there are some things that he couldn't do that El can do vocally. El doesn't have to use the falsetto in the higher register as much because of his natural counter tenor, and uses the falsetto as an extra gear just because he doesn't have to. :) As a fan I want El, like Babyface wanted when he helped produce Heart Mind & Soul to showcase that higher register because it reminds us of Bobby and El and what they can do that not many other's can touch. :)
Personally I believe that El has always had Bobby's spirit in him musically and people shouldn't compare because they're both incredible and happen to be in the same family like (the basketball Curry's, Jackson's, Winan's, BGee's musically etc.) As El said recently in the QuestLove Supreme podcast interview on June 9thpodcasts.apple.com/za/podcast/questlove-supreme/id1485250501 he is proud to be part of Bobby's blood line, and evidently so was Bobby. :)

I always get emotional watching El talk about his brother Bobby, because I always see how emotional he gets and admiration he has talking about him. It’s the exact same admiration and emotional way I have and get get when talking about my cousin Byron “BJ” Jackson… a musician who actually played with El DeBarge before he passed away a few years ago.

God instructed El's mom to anoint him with oil when he was 7, telling her he was to sing and play. Then she got Bobby out of bed to teach him his first song, Mary Had A Little Lamb. And he's been playing ever since. Go listen to Q'estlove's podcast interview with El. It is very in-depth and a must hear.
El and his family have been through A LOT. He's blessed to still be here.

I couldn't agree with you more! Bunny's book The Kept One's (2nd ed) confirmed that EL could hit every note that Bobby could. And Bobby would teach him the incredible adlibs at the end of songs.

I am a HUGE El DeBarge fan and really love his music. And he is my friend in my head. ☺LOL!! I do not understand why he has not put out new music since the 2010 "Second Chance" album, which is amazing body of music. Life is short and time waits for no one. Come on El, new music please! Love.

I met El backstage years ago (in the 80s) when he toured with Luther (rip) and Nu Shooz in Indiana, he was so sweet and that smile 💕I also met Bobby (rip) he was fineeeee too and funny,! I still think about that day because El was my husband in my head for years lol. Sheila E is still gorgeous also!

Dear Sheila, thank you so much - wonderful episode - I searched for some 30 years for this song "All that love" which I have heard on a radio tape in my father's car in 1986 in Cologne. My father could not tell me who is singing this, we thought all the years it is a girl .... this song is never played in German radio, unfortunately. Finally in 2014 after lots of googling (because we did not know the title) I finally made it - El DeBarge - what a great artist! Many thanks again and greetings from Germany
Love Brother El: A great talent. Last post I mentioned Love Always was a highlight of my teenage years. I cannot forget Turn the Page. That song stayed on repeat during my first major breakup from the mother of my children while serving in the Navy. El Is a major talent. Glad to see he is out here grinding.
This is awesome!!! What a talent and love the regard and respect he has for his family. We are aware of El and his families struggles, but this really makes you cheer and pray for them to stay up. I selfishly need to hear some new classic R&B music from him.
