After watching your Mystery box vid, I decided to rejoin the Airfix club after a a 40 year plus gap. I then ordered the 1/35th scale mystery box. After applying my 20% joining discount It cost £60 instead of the normal £75. Items are picked at random, but very pleased with the selection. Saved £ 97.38 on the kits with discount applied. Would have still £82.38 without discount. So I am glad I watched the video.
You lucky lad - you could get a really nice kit for free very soon! I would suggest paying by card so they phone you - that way it costs £2.99 for standard delivery and not the £4.95 they say on the web site.
I made a similar video about the airfix flying hours a little while ago. Whilst it is good that you can redeem these tokens, I did highlight some problems with the current format....
I don't think we have that club in the US. I'll have to look into it. Wish we could get the new starter sets over here. I'm not seeing them on Amazon over here yet. I look forward to building that new starter Spitfire.
I have a feeling that the club is run from the UK and the main difference is that the magazine is digital only outside of the UK but do check on the Airfix web site. The new starter Spitfire is really very well thought out by the designer Paramjit.
I find it a little difficult in getting a guide showing ,series 1 to 6 so I can spend my hours so I’m not sure how the points work with the AO numbers ,tia for any help .
The series is denoted in the first two digits of the kit serial number, For example, the new release of the Mitchell is A06015A - "06" says this is series six and the A at the end tells you it's a second release of the kit with new decals. The new 1/24 Bulldog is A05141, the "05" says it's a series 5 kit. The 1/24 Spitfire is Series 17!!! Anything with a V at the end is a Vintage Classics release. Flying Hours don't apply to starter sets or gift sets, they normally start with A55 or A50.
I'm not convinced the club is at all good value for money! By the time you've paid the membership, purchased models to accrue enough tokens to redeem a kit, then paid for the postage on your free kit and the postage required to send the passport back, you could've saved enough money to have bought the "free" kit yourself. It seems to would take quite a few years and quite a few free kits to have made anything I'd consider a saving.
Does depend on how much you spend on kits over a year. £279.50 is the the break even if you factor in postage, minus whatever you value the ‘free’ club kit as.
Hi Gary. Very informative video! By the way, will you be doing a build video on the Beaufort? It's something I'm interested in buying but as there are only a few builds on the platform, I've no way of seeing if it's a good kit etc. Cheers
I’m in the middle of building it! Should have a video in a few days. So far it is a lovely kit. The only thing I’m concerned about is building the nose with all that glazing! Cheers, Gary
@@garys_stuff I'll be waiting for that... 😅 By the way, have you built any of the hobby boss 1/48 kits? Thinking of buying some as they're quite cheap, cheers
@@dand9495 I haven't yet. I have mainly done 1/72 over the last few years because I've had a project to build everything ever flown by 800NAS and I don't have the display room to do it in 1/48! The next 1/48 on my list is the new Gaspatch Me-163. I might have a look into Hobby Boss, although there are about a dozen kits ahead of anything new in the queue!
The product code tells you the series number, normally you have something like A06015A - this means series 6, product 15 and the A says it is the first new markings re-release (in this case the 1/48 Sea Fury). So the "06" is the series. The numbers are different for their 1/35 vehicles as they are made in collaboration with Academy (apart form the new Ferret) and things like starter sets have their own serials, for example the new Aston Martin DB5 is A55011.
As Airfix do more than aircraft is there an argument to call them Airfix Hours not Flying Hours? It's a pity you can't pay by Paypal as that would save aggravation for Airfix /and/ the club member.

You can also donate them to Models for Hero's as I did.
Brilliant, I always keep my boxes and now currently going through them all to see how many hours I have. Thank you.

I can always learn from he master! I did find the process easy but I’ll check out your video now. Cheers, Gary
@@garys_stuff wouldn’t consider myself a master 😂

I think it's Europe only. Not available in asia/Australia
Hi Gary, a great informative vid. Are you going to be building any of your aldi builds soon, as I can't wait. Cheers for now all the best mate......
Got one on the blocks already, also doing the Beaufort and a vid of the new Vampire is going up tomorrow. I’m busier than it might look 🤪 cheers mate!

Just did the glazing and it goes together like a dream. Superb job from the designers. Should have the video ready by the weekend...

Is there any way to tell on the box or on the airfix website what series a model kit is?

PayPal would be brilliant, because then I can use my Amex card and get my Avios points!!!
