      If you want to really teach someone how to drive they need to be fully aware all the time of everything they’re doing and how it affects the overall journey. An ideal car would be a 1937 Morris 12 on cross ply tyres, drums, non synchro box and slightly scruffy leather seats with a bit of stuffing coming out. Nothing like it for making you aware of your own mortality on a duel carriageway.

    Very sensible approach on pricing your Tesla - some people get hung up about values when they come to sell and are a bit unrealistic. Tesla's price cuts are a pain for existing owners, but seems a sound business strategy - they have enough margin to drop prices and still make a decent return. It's more important for them to keep volumes up and keep their factories running at optimum capacity. I traded my 2 year old Evoque before Christmas - the trade price went UP by £1k after I sold it, but I would also have had to pay another £1k for my MG4 if I'd bought this side of Christmas..........

      Elon's politics... lol. You don't understand the market, this is not new.
      'When a leading company cuts prices, all their rivals feel pressure to follow suit - it's economics 101.
      And the textbook scenario is playing out in the headlines.
      On Monday, Ford announced it was cutting prices on the Mustang Mach-E, an electric SUV that competes against Tesla's Model Y. Prices dropped by between $900 and $5,900, depending on the vehicle's options.
      It was clearly a response to Tesla, and Marin Gjaja, the chief customer officer of Ford's electric vehicle business, confirmed to reporters that the company was "responding to changes in the marketplace."
      The big question now may be whether other companies can afford to follow suit. Tesla, which started out as an automotive underdog, now has become the overwhelming market leader in the EV sector.
      It makes healthy profits on electric vehicles that big automakers are, in many cases, still making at a loss - or struggling to make at volume.'

      Very interesting question! I would love for the UK to be mainly auto. But there's still a lot of manual cars. And they are cheaper to rent. And for holidays abroad in some places it's very beneficial to have a manual licence, there might not be many auto cars!
      I did my licence on a manual so that I'm not restricted and can drive any car if needed (for example a manual van!!!). However, when I rent a car I try to only go for auto and electric and avoid manual like plague. 😂 Not because I can't drive one, just because why would you! Auto is a much nicer experience. But I don't personally want to be in a position where I need to drive a car or a van and can't just because I have an auto licence. 😂
      Although for people with a simple goal of quickly learning to drive and buying an auto car and not driving anything else, then it's probably a decent option. But it can restrict your freedom slightly (cheap cars, manual vans, holidays abroad).

So seriously looked at booking an auto test in the next town along that I'd never even been to. Scrapped the plans in the end and passed the theory again for a manual as many company cars required a manual licence and I loved changing gear in my old Civic Esi. These days I'd happily pass in an auto. My brother's partner is nearly 50 and wants to drive now, I've advised she only needs to get an auto as the electric market is building that way anyhow and she won't need to learn gears, clutch etc.

    With regard to dashcams, do you have any stats on how well different brands of dashcam (or at least the SD cards inside) survive severe car accidents? (Say sufficiently bad that the car was written off.) A dashcam may have all the bells and whistles but if the SD card is unreadable after a big crash - and thus provide evidence - then the dashcam has failed.

    • @DjDolHaus86
      @DjDolHaus86 Рік тому +4

      SD cards are pretty bombproof because they have no moving parts. Electromagnetic interference, fire and total destruction are the only things likely to destroy them beyond use.
      A big physical wreck is unlikely to destroy an SD unless it is directly struck (ie. snapped or abraded to pieces) but if the car goes up in flames then there is not much hope. The same could ultimately be said of anything short of a black box style device where it is built to survive prolonged thermal and chemical attack but for this same protection in a dashcam you'd require an impractically large and costly package. A more practical solution may be to copy to a seperate sd such as on a phone improving the chance of one card surviving in the case of a fire.

    4K overheating in dashcams is a real pain. I bought "TrueCam M11 GPS 4K" last year and even in mild summer temperatures it overheats all the time (it uses H.265 codec for 4K and the chip is working really hard). I even glued some passive heatsinks all around the camera body, but it didn't help much. I had to change the resolution to normal FullHD (and older H.264 codec) and that works with no problem, but obviously I wanted 4K and this is not a solution...

      Realtime 4k encoding requires a LOT more CPU power than 1080p and that amount of "maths right now" uses significant electrical power on cheap high nm silicon. I think any dashcam that did it better that simply processing 1080p by quartering pixels and maybe anti-aliasing them would be prohibitively expensive to produce right now.
      To be honest, 1080p and good optics and sensor is more beneficial than 4k for me.

    VAT qualifying?
    I can see that would apply on the "tool of the trade" that you use for teaching, which are *exclusivly* used for business use.
    But if you've done a trip the supermarket in the Tesla, that is private use, so it is no longer exclusive business use, which means it would not be VAT qualifiying.
    My Ltd bought my Tesla, which is my company car, which is also used for personal use, so I couldn't claim the VAT back, and when I sell it, I'm not sure how the accountant will do the VAT on it.
    Same for the Soul EV that the other half drives.
    But if I get a VAN or a pickup for another member of staff, that would be VAT qualifying. but there aren't any nice dual/king cab electric VANs at the moment.

    • @Stallzyx
      @Stallzyx Рік тому

      Yeah I'm not sure he was saying that for his own ownership, but for the person who wants to buy it from him that they may be able to get VAT Qualifying benefits potentially but yeah could be tricky with what you say.
      His Golf GTI on the other hand though which is used for teaching is maybe different. Same with my driving instructor and his car but I have a feeling he is on a lease or finance agreement and changes every few years. With my own work I included the price of my initial setup equipment which I have bought over previous years and still use along with any upgrades, even if it is also used for personal use. I did debate whether to put 50% of costs down (to split between business time and personal time) instead but discussing it with my mum who's done her own self assessments for years, it's easier to just claim the whole thing as it doesn't make a difference in my case. Total revenue was under the national allowance and then the profit after subtracting initial costs is clearly also, so I don't get any tax advantage.
      Regarding the supermarket shops, couldn't there be a slight loophole if he say bought some driving tuition related items on such journeys also i.e. L or P plates or items needed for car maintenance. Plus still got to fuel yourself somehow in order to do your work by getting the groceries. If you drove it to a football match or a road trip to a certain destination then I think that would be more difficult?

      @RichardButlerUK Рік тому

      @@Stallzyx there are different rules for Limited company and sole trader/partnerships
      I was only thinking of how the rules apply to a Ltd company or PLC, like mine
      where HMRC have a magic phrase about "exclusive business use" and the HMRC handbook has an example that says if you occasionally stop at the supermarket on the way back from a business trip/job, you are ok. But if you get home, you are not allowed to do a seperate trip to go out.
      if you ever do, then the vehical has "personal use", so it is not "exclusive business use" and the vehicle is then stripped of it's VAT qualifyng status. and the business is not allowed to reclaim the VAT on the original purchase.
      and once the VAT chain is broken, it's not qualifying for sale to any subsequent VAT registered business, only on the "margin scheme" for a motor trader (which I don't know about, because it wouldn't apply to my business)
      It's horrible.
      It's why big business usually only buy brand new cars and not anything 2nd hand or even dealer showroom/demo/pre-registered vehicles

    Seems logical your reasons especially the work side of things. I learned in a manual but have only driven an automatic hybrid (Yaris) and my Zoe EV since passing and I'll be frank I think it's a shame us here in the UK are so stubbornly set in our manual driving ways, and continue to push learning manual and buying manual so hard.
    The rest of the world caught on to the practicality of automatics years ago, and modern autos are excellent cars. Plus we'll be going the way of EVs eventually so no gears there either.
    I really feel that driving auto is easier (even if you find manual a breeze, auto is less stuff to be doing, can't argue with this) and therefore safer IMO especially for new and learner drivers.
    SO many people I know are not confident drivers at all, but they don't use an auto car because it's not the norm. If nobody had to use any part of their brain switching gears at roundabouts etc they could be using more of their brain to check for hazards. If we truly want cars to be safer, we should be removing pointless tasks like changing gears.

I went over to automatic transmission years ago when I was diagnosed with ms - having hand controls fitted it I need them is kinda gonna b much easier in an automatic, with the added advantage with automatic driving for me is a whole lot easier anyway! Plus the traffic where I live is really bad so it’s a no brainier to go auto! I also now have an EV & it’s amazing! I don’t cover masses of amounts of mileage and it’s costs me sooooo much less to charge her up than it would to keep stuffing petrol in a car of similar size! I was only getting around 70 miles in my petrol car for £20 worth of petrol but now if I charge from say 40% to full, it’s only costing around £4! We r with octopus energy and they have given us a tariff from 00:30 - 04:30 when our electricity is only 12p per kwhr instead of 43p hence the car is charged up then and the dishwasher & washing machine (on a timer delay) goes on too!

As is the purchase costs are too high, and there are no suitable vehicles around
      In my old diesel estate I do far better than 70 miles for £20, even when diesel was 2 quid a litre. I would have done even better without a boot full of work kit :) Even my ancient 4x4 can make 70/20 and thats 25 years old, with a 3.1l engine, an ancient 4sp auto and all in weight of over 3tonnes. I've waited more than 5 months and now what's worse is being told you're still not ready to take it! I've had like almost 100 hours now and three mock tests where I've made one serious error and a few minors in each so that's not awful but my instructor still feels I'm not quite there yet 😑😒😔.
    Basically he feels like I'm not like the average learner, where usually you'll be able to pinpoint where the weaknesses are. For me the main issue is focus and my mistakes are slightly more random. He did say he can't really teach me anything new at this point because he feels I know what to do: I have all the skills to drive and have all the potential, very good car control etc but can't maintain the level for long enough due to lack of concentration. Like I'll drive really well for 30 mins and then make a mistake, dwell on it, lose focus then make another error and so on. Then my negative thoughts remind me how useless I am for taking this long.
    I'm almost 40 so age doesn't help but after this many hours I should be there. It is really demoralising. I've had three instructors with some bad experiences with the previous two, some big gaps in between like a month with no driving.
    I feel very inadequate and worthless as a human being. I've never been that confident in myself so this isn't helping.
    I feel like there has to be something really wrong with me to fail like this. I'm already a failure in life, unfulfilling admin job, haven't had a relationship in many years. I wish I was never born. Hate what I've become.
    Anyway regardless, Monday I'll have a final mock test and then decide if I need to delay the test which will be difficult to accept after so many hours and lessons and money. I just want to give it a shot but apparently, if an instructor puts forward a pupil for their test when they're not ready, it can reflect badly on the instructor. Is that right?

    • @nettlesoup
      @nettlesoup Рік тому

      Full Self Driving is in Beta in North America and is not available anywhere else yet (although there are rumours that Tesla staff are testing it on UK roads).
      Whilst FSD is intended to allow the driver to fall asleep when complete, there are no systems available today that allow that. If you've seen UA-cam videos of people sleeping at the wheel in Teslas then it's of people using the Autopilot and/or FSD Beta systems improperly, and bypassing the driver alertness monitoring Tesla employ. You should have your hands on the wheel and be ready to take over at any time right now.
      We don't know when FSD will exit Beta and be ready to allow the car to drive itself but it could be several years from now for the USA, let alone the UK.
      FSD should eventually try to avoid potholes, though that is not in the Beta feature set yet.
      Road noise on newer 3/Y vehicles is much reduced as they have double glazing on front and rear door windows and better acoustic dampening in general. For best Tesla sound dampening however, you'd be looking at the more luxurious Model S or X.

    minor thing Ash with the Wi-Fi 5Ghz Connection it mentioned, its different from Wireless Mobile Phone Networking known as 5G. in terms of your Home Internet, your Router is likely to use the 2.4 and 5Ghz Frequencies in a wireless capacity to ensure wireless devices maintain a mostly stable connection to the Internet and have a faster data transfer speed, such as a Smart Telly or a Games console, 5G is a generational thing with Cellular Communication (Our Mobile Phones when out and about), its basically the 5th Generation of technology relating to Mobile Phones and in terms of actual Radio Frequency, they don't have anything to do with each other, 5Ghz is wireless connectivity spectrum for private use in the home, 5G is much higher power in terms of Frequency, i think in the region of 30 Ghz to ensure the wider public using Mobile Phones as well as some industrial requirements have connectivity as well as faster Data Transfer speeds compared to 4G

      in this case, your Viofo has a network that allows you to connect to it to retrieve footage as you are obviously aware, but it default operates in the 2.4 GHZ range and as a result has a slower data transfer rate to your phone when recovering footage via your mobile phone. using the 5Ghz connectivity would more or less half the time it took to download a clip from the camera.

    Enjoyed the video, Ashley. Can I ask, is the UA-cam feed we see from your dash-cams or from a Go-Pro, or something similar. I am thinking of changing my dash-cam but I wasn’t impressed with the resolution of the 4K as it was still difficult to read number plates and virtually impossible whilst on the move! Perhaps some resolution is lost on getting the images to my device?
    Lastly, I’m not a great fan of pure electric cars at the moment, in their present guise. This is for a number of reasons. 1: I think the motor industry is pricing these new vehicle higher than need be, claiming development costs. However, one doesn’t need to look far to see vehicles retro-fitted with electric motors for a similar price. Now, with the might of the motor industry I don’t think it’s too difficult or costly to design a new electric vehicle as they are relatively simple compared to an ICE vehicle. 2: Batteries are very expensive and not fully developed enough yet plus the mining of the raw materials needed is harmful to both the employees off these companies and the planet - which is the point… we are trying to protect it! 3: The charging infrastructure is a licence to print money, in my humble opinion and is not presently practice. We should go for a system of battery swap, whereby the batteries are exchanged by being pulled out from under the car on a tray and swapped over with fresh. The low charged batteries from the car can then be charged, ready for the next customer. This may need some standardisation. Not something to avoid, I think. I believe this system is adopted in the far east.
    Lastly, I think the best solution at the moment is still the hybrid - no anxiety, fast fuelling and, on average, somewhere in the region of 70 to 100 mpg.
    My apologies for the super long comment but I hope it is worthy of interest to some.

For video (as opposed to photography) you should be looking at the MB/s of the card to ensure you don't get frame drops (that skipping you mentioned). You've done right to reduce the FPS of the camera in the meantime, as fewer frames per second means less info for the card to write. You could also reduce the resolution from 1080p to 720p if possible, but that will make your footage look worse. Anyway, looks like your new card is 100MB/s compared to your old one which is 10MB/s, so this should clear up your issue :)

For some reason it kept dropping resolution when the vehicle was switched off/on. Agree that the plug in rear camera is surprisingly good. I have gone back to VIOFO, I had the A119 V3 in my last car and have now bought the A129 Plus Duo. Much better and far cheaper than the Nextbase.

      @@markas1370 To be fair after doing some research, the 32gb PNY micro SD i use is very basic. At 10mb/s compared to the 64gb Nextbase Micro Pro SD card at 100mb/s that i will be getting. It should reduce the buffered to zero.
      As for quality, when viewing on the computer the resolution doesn't go down it stays the same. My problem as i've explained is just processing speed, which i hope to fix. Will do an edit on this feed when the memory card arrives.

    That would've been pretty bad if it hadn't gone right, viofo install, but looked cool as, for VIOFO 👌 - Ashley's selling that bigtime as it looks very good, especially after this..

    I like the look of the new EV Jeep Avenger which start at £36k but your Tesla is well worth £36k. I have looked into hybrid cars as well. Wouldn’t mind the hybrid equivalent to my current Honda CRV

      I have a hybrid Rav 4. What a car! Not dissimilar to the CRV. Either would be a good choice. You won't regret it. I absolutely LOVE my Rav.

      @@paultrewin5871 my CRV turns 20 years old next month. It’s my first car since passing my test at the ripe old age of 54 🤣 Hoping to keep it for a couple more years but I suppose it depends what it’s next MOT reveals when I take it in ten days time. Hopefully nothing major.

      Eh? Commuting is where they work very well. It's long road trips where things are less convenient.

    Wise choice, teslas are well overrated. I would replace it with an seat leon Fr sport phev or if you want pure electric i would go for a seat el born or vw id3 👍
