In this documentary, we take a look at one of the key moments in the Norman conquest of Sicily: the Battle of Cerami, waged by Roger of Hauteville in 1063.
Roger: It's over Saracen. I have the high ground!
130 Normans against only 3000 Saracens was never going to be a "fair" fight. LOL
Yeah, those Saracens never really had a chance.
@@psal8715 What is termed "heavy cavalry" was just becoming prevalent in this era. The Saracens had none and would have required a much greater numbers advantage, as well as different tactics, to counter it.
@BulgaroSlav And the Cataphracts concept of "armor" could never stand up to the medieval knights. Nor could they have stood up to the medieval knight's, stirrups and cantled saddles. Cataphracts were more readily knocked off of their horses, which is why chariots could be successful against them as well as heavy infantry, such as the phalanx.
And this is why I said "becoming prevalent at this time." As opposed to 'just invented,' or some such.
@BulgaroSlav cataphracts were inferior to Knights by equipment and training. Knights are simply the evolution of cataphracts
@@anthonyhargis6855 This is not the late medieval era so comparing cataphracts to late medieval era armored heavy cavalry is not be appropriate, the cavalry involved in this encounter is not as heavily armored as you think.

@BulgaroSlav Three words mate:
Study
Your
History.
The Celts (referring to the Northern tribes of Britain in particular) take pride in that they were never overcome by the Romans. You got Hadrian's Wall to prove that. That should say something.
On top of that, every nation, tribe, ethnicity has been overcome at least once in the past.
And if you're gonna say "not so America/Russia/China", remember those were once similarly all divided smaller countries/tribes who were eventually 'overcome' and united under one banner.
Blessings to you.
Only heard about this battle today and such a great story of harrowing courage should be honoured with a good movie to go with it one that’s true to historical accuracy of course

Norman military prowess got further highlighted at the battle of Durazzo against Alexius I Comnenus.
Awesome video. I second the novel recomendation. "Why Does the Heathen Rage?" is a dope book.
@Marrowbones he didnt say that this was a crusade, he only mentioned that the papal attitude towards the norman actions in Sicily set the mood and laid down the ideals that would lead to the decision for the 1st crusade
@Marrowbones Hmm I'll have to look into that, I am not aware of such.
But I appreciate that you have evidence to back your claims and try to combat misinformation. I have yet to form an opinion on the matter

I'm just picturing the power of that vaunted Norman charge. Those soldiers charging knee to knee at a full gallop atop Frisian war horses, blitzing through several enemy rows within seconds; horse and lance become a sickle mower to wheat. 130 against 3,000: That Norman audacity.

Battle of Sigetzvar -2000 Croats vs Sultan Suleyman with 300 000 soldiers (only 80k -120k participated in the battle)
Who won? Well ,Ottomans did ,but they abandoned their great attack on Vienna cuz Croats took 50k up to 100k Turks with them ,in the afterlife.
And Suleyman got a heart attack when he realized how many men he lost ,and died.
Admittedly that's the first time I've heard of mercenaries referred to as adventure seekers. Interesting choice of words.
If there were 300-400 infantry with the 130 knights then the odds were 3000:500 or 6:1 instead of 23:1. Either way the odds favoured the Saracens but there's a big difference between those numbers, especially when you consider the Normans were defending, as you need a numerical advantage when attacking (typically at least 3:1).
You're absolutely right. The infantry was certainly key in allowing them to hold their position all day while the Arabs attacked them uphill. Probably most of the cavalry was kept fresh behind the infantry until the Arabs started retreating, and then Roger's fresh Norman cavalry began pummeling the exhausted Arab and Berber cavalry.

Hurray! Good on you, Roger.
Proto-Germanic U106 and its major branch, R-L48, are concentrated (somewhat) in Palermo. From the North Men (Normans). Danish and Norwegian Vikings who had settled in France. Some I1 there as well, same reason. Jutes and Angles from the same stock founded England in 449 CE and won at 5 1o 1 and 10 to 1 odds, depending when and where between 449 and 600 CE. So, Jutes or Normans winning against incredible odds, neither are by chance...

The numbers are exaggerated... just like the movie 300. As the saying goes, if it is too good to be true, it usually is.
No. The original sources report that the Saracen army was 50,000 strong. That's the exaggeration. Historians today believe that the Arab army was probably around 3,000, and that's a very reasonable number for a medieval army. This particular army was a coalition force made up of North African and Sicilian troops. On the other hand, Roger's numbers were considerably more limited. His force was basically meant to be an occupying group to hold on to the Norman conquests in the northeast until his brother Robert Guiscard could show up with a proper invasion force to take over more of the island. Roger had around 130 knights with him, and he was able to throw an infantry together of 300 or 400. The reason he won this battle is because he picked an excellent site on a hilltop where he could arrange his men in a solid formation and resist the uphill attacks from the Arabs. In addition, his cavalry was very tightly disciplined, far more so than the Arab coalition which had only just been thrown together. Really, Roger just held that hilltop position while the Arabs exhausted themselves, then once they tried to retreat he started decimating them with his cavalry. His strategy was very good as were his men. That's why he won, despite being so seriously outnumbered.
Well the movie 300 is based on a graphic novel (comic book), not directly from the actual historical event.
@@eodyn7 The actual numbers of Greek soldiers was about 1300-1400. Maybe over 1000 were from the other Greek city states. When they found that they were going to be surrounded, all left, leaving the 300 Spartan soldiers to fight to the death.
It's not a far fetched number, there have been many similar victories throughout history. I know this much from the various underdog victories of my country. It's not always about the sheer numbers. It's often and usually about location, positioning, military prowess and strategy, technology, ability to defend, resources. And of course, heart.
