The violacea alba is white and yellow, hopefully we get a yellow colour, pink lip, high flower count from happy fan bringing up the usual 1 or 2 from violacea, and more intense fragrance from the violacea side! I really hope so, going to flask the pod soon, apparently 5- 6 months is normal maturity or 4-5 for green pods, and its been nearly 5 🤞🤞🤞

    So in order to see what your new hybrids look like when mature and in bloom, we'll need to stay subscribed for the next 5+ years... This sounds like a very good strategy! ;P Seriously, though, I'm really impressed that you're doing this. I would never have the patience to do something like that! At least with art, I have a vision in my mind and know what things will be like, even if something takes years to complete...but you won't have any idea what the flowers will be like for years and years. That takes some real dedication.
    Oh wow, your Maxillaria tenuifolias are HUGE. Haha, time to scratch that orchid off my wishlist... But they're beautiful, and congrats on the lovely blooms! The Purple Martin is also beautiful- I love that type of blue-ish lavender on flowers. You have such a lovely and varied collection of orchids.

    • @TheOrchidRoom
      @TheOrchidRoom  4 роки тому

      Mwahahaha you've uncovered my master plan 😈🖤
      But no, really, I will probably fail with alot of these before I start succeeding, I'm totally prepared for that. For example, I just discovered P668 is so high in salts it isn't recommended for germination anymore 😆🤦‍♀️ Go figure, I've salted the vandas. On the plus side, any that survive will have double the nutrients they are meant to! On the minus, I'm pretty sure it'll kill off many seedlings. Natural selection? 😆😅 But I find the trial and error and troubleshooting issues really fun, so that's the journey for me! I enjoy every little stage of growth just as much as flowers too, so seedlings seem super exciting to me because every little milestone happens so fast!
      Tenuifolia do get big.... on the plus they grow up more than out and end up looking like a Pampas grass 😆 I quite like them! But not for small spaces I think, they need a windowsill more than shelves, or very tall shelves! Thanks so much for watching and commenting 💗🥰🙂

    • @karmiya-plays
      @karmiya-plays 4 роки тому

      @@TheOrchidRoom That's also really impressive, though! Failing an orchid is so gutting, so being willing to go through with all those risks is very brave. Oh no, I'm sorry about your vanda seedlings! I hope that at least a few make it.
      Honestly, the troubleshooting just stresses me out! I have two problem orchids still, and I'm so sad and worried for them. They're my newest ones, and it feels like they've decided they hate my apartment and need to jettison all their roots immediately in response.
      They are very beautiful! Tenuifolias definitely are orchids which look great whether in bloom or not. But the height is a bit of a problem. I grow my orchids on a single coffee table! It has a second layer underneath the glass top, probably for coffee table books, which I could use for smaller orchids which don't need the height...but it's still a relatively limited space. I think the Encyclia cordigera is about my limit when it comes to size. Anything bigger than that is a bit alarming to me xD

      Thankyou 🥰 It's the same in the UK, the orchids that are common in the US are impossible to find here! And Australia has some miltoniopsis hybrids rarely available anywhere else in the world- they must grow them in the colder regions I guess!? The iwanagara appleblossom has been totally unavailable in Europe for a few years now, and tiny divisions can go ridiculously expensive when they come up. In the IS they pick them up in grocery stores! But the chantilly lace, a close relative withthe same grandparent as the iwanagara, has flooded the market in Europe 🤷‍♀️ Makes you wonder if it isnt planned....Have a great day!

They grow like they are in steroids lol and the color variation are just Amazing.

    I am rewatching your older videos to help me with my SH on leca transition. I love the repotting process because it is a clean process, the plants get a good cleaning and checked for bugs. I am also scared that I might loose them if the SH does not work, last year I did a pilot with 10 plants and it was a mixed result, I think it has to do with the watering, hopefully I will be able to tweak that. Could you do a video on your watering method? It would help me figuring out my watering routine on my SH growing care. Thank you.

    I would try crossing the Vanda mimi palmer x pine river pink with your bellina alba x tetrapsis c1... both fragrant, interesting colours/shape.
    If I recall vandas and phals will cross... but genetics are a fickle thing.

    • @TheOrchidRoom
      @TheOrchidRoom  4 роки тому

      Hi! That's a great idea! I love phal x vandas! So far I've tried pollinating the mimi x pine river with samera, violacea alba and Neofinetia. All closed then fell, tried the reverse on the samera too! Tried self pollinating it and the flower also fell. I will totally try the bellina x tetraspis with it both ways since the flowers surely can't last much longer, but I wonder if there is something about the hybrid that is making it even more fickle 😥🤔🤷‍♀️ I would love the hybrid you're suggesting though, how pretty would that be!

    • @danielm.1441

    How do you keep the Maxilaria Tenulfolia roots to stay in their sheaths? Mine has roots that are out of the sheaths so I tried to keep the sheaths a bit more moist and I think I may have gone too far. Any tips are appreciated.

    • @TheOrchidRoom
      @TheOrchidRoom  4 роки тому

      Hi Pix! They should be contained by the sheath/bract material and directed down the stem. Just a quick question- Have you ever peeled the bracts back? Not saying you have, but some do without realising they need to stay on, so just have to ask! If they escape they will probably dry but there should still be some contained behind the bracts for them to keep going on with 🙂

      Thanks.

    • @TheOrchidRoom
      @TheOrchidRoom  4 роки тому

      Yes that's correct, you should never ever peel maxi bracts back, it'll kill the root system. That's why I checked 🙂 Probably just a rogue few roots burst from the bract then, wouldn't worry too much. Moistening the bracts will probably make them softer and easier for the roots to pierce which is what you don't want, you want them to be a solid tunnel wall that protects the roots and directs them down into the medium 🙂

    You seem to be able to “control” the number of aerial roots on your Phals. I have a few that are just wild with aerials. I could put them in larger pots but not sure if it is wise. I grow in fairly airy organic mix of orchiata, perlite and some sphagnum.

    • @TheOrchidRoom
      @TheOrchidRoom  4 роки тому

      Hi Pix! I don't do anything to control aerial roots. Many have lots but most direct themselves down into the pot. If there are too many and I can, I put them into the pots at the next repots. But if they don't need repots I leave well alone, you can probably see lots of aerials on the phal shelves 🙂

    Maxillaria x Lycaste? Hmm, I didn't know they were cross fertile, that should be interesting.
    Oh, your Super Stupid x gigantea is registered as Sogo Spot (and it was registered a long time ago, 1996, so god knows why they wouldn't sell it as that). I would definitely cross that one to something.

      Hi Michael! Thanks for your ideas, as ever, much appreciated! Oh gosh I've been struggling with this long name for ages and didn't even need to 🤦‍♀️ Yes if the maxi carries and matures the pod it will be super interesting! Its been swelling for about 4 months now, very slowly. So I think potentially viable. Not sure how long they hold pods for, need to do some research, seems small still but they may not produce massive capsules.

    your conservatory is so cool. I'm planning on releasing some predatory mites this winter since I have a few houseplants that get attacked by spider mites in the dead of winter (just dont tell my wife I'm releasing bugs in the house)... I got rid of my catisetinae a few years ago due to them becoming spider mite magnets. I have heard good things about them- especially in controlled environments.

    • @TheOrchidRoom
      @TheOrchidRoom  4 роки тому

      I really love the idea of predator mites! I tried them before, for thrips, but then got spider mites because I stopped spraying everything so I didn't harm the predators. I haven't had any major thrip issues this year thank goodness, but I think that had to do with some preventative sprays. I would really like to cut spray treatments out though. I'm considering next year really trying a few different predator mite combinations instead. I love the ones that live in my pots, which I think also eat springtails and thrip larvae. They gave me hope that they can work! Don't worry, I won't tell your wife about the bugs 🤣😉

    • @Spencer_Plant_Projects

      @@TheOrchidRoom hahah!! many of the companies here offer different combinations of predator mites as well as ones that are best at different temperature ranges. I had a serious bout of thrips by bringing a bouquet of dahlias from my outdoor garden. it took me nearly 3/4 of a year to get rid of them. Apparently you can buy predatory nematodes to take care of the thrips larvae but I was eventually able to get rid of them combining azadirachthin and spinosad and treating consistently for a month. i hate thrips.
