Asa Packer was a man who enriched himself on the death and misery of many others. The company provided workers and their families with a shack and rations, except the workers "quotas" were somehow never achieved, so the company would then charge them for the shack and rations, putting them in debt to Asa Packer so they could work in his mines. If a man died in the mines the company sent out a man to tell the widow she had to be out the next day because the company was now a man short. Now if the family had a son of 9-10 years of age they could replace their father and stay, but at a reduced wage (even more debt). To call the man a philanthropist is far from truthful. Don't forget about his son, the town drunk, who he built a mansion for right next to his own.
