  • Demo and tutorial showing all the new pianos and related features in the newly launched KORG NAUTILUS SYNTHESIZER WORKSTATION keyboard. We'll play all the acoustic grand and upright pianos and I'll explain how to adjust the tone of each piano.
    This will be helpful if piano is important and you are choosing between this and the KORG KRONOS, or perhaps the YAMAHA MODX, YAMAHA MONTAGE or ROLAND FANTOM.

    SGX-2 is a great piano engine. You can really craft a beautiful and authentic piano sound. I've spent a long time with it on my Kronos and I love it. Very accessible. Hours of fun for tweakers.

    Yes, the German D, Japanese, Austrian are optional libraries and not included in the base Nautilus. You can demo the string resonance by playing a C chord (middle C) as lightly as possible and hold that (you want it to be silent). Now forcefully strike a low C. The C chord should now resonante.

    Just wanted to say thank you for all the Nautilus videos you've taken such great care and time to make. Your videos are the primary reason why I just pulled the trigger on getting a Nautilus 88. It just arrived today (3/2/2022), and I can't wait to start playing it. I've been using my Triton Studio 88's for 20 years now. It was time to step up to a new 'board.

    Good exploration of the various piano sounds and settings on the Nautilus. I owned a 6'1" grand piano for many years, and to me the Damper effect is one of the most important to include to create a realistic piano sound. Many of the programs appear to be variations of the same sound samples with different envelopes, settings, effects, and EQ. This is actually a good thing because the color of the sound can change significantly with different effects chained together. Optimizing the volume and effect levels, parameters, and EQ is required, else you can end up with a sound that overloads the available headroom in the internal signal path (especially when layering with other sounds) resulting in unwanted artifacts like buzzing, ringing, noise. So it's good to have many variations provided up-front as presets with appropriate settings implemented by Korg sound designers.

    The berlin, austrian grands are libraries already available for the korg kronos (korg shopping). There you have gigabytes of samples available for the kronos, some of them are free (Bolder sound, kapro EXS18 and 19) . Berlin, Austrian libraries are fantastic sounding pianos. My preferred being the Berlin grand. The italian grand is also really realistic. Coming to the resonnance: it’s real sympathetic resonnance, only works if you play harmonics,... you play a C2 and the hit briefly a C4, G4,B4, (try many),...then you will hear on a real piano C (and relatives ) harmonics and subharmonics sparkeled by the C2 strings,... it works the same on the kronos. And I guess,..the nautilus. Hope this helps.

    • @WoodyPianoShack
      @WoodyPianoShack  3 роки тому +1

      are those paid expansion libraries you mean? thanks for clearing up some of the resonance confusion, it's a bit fuzzy for me. (understatement).

      The spec sheet for the Nautilus says that references to the earlier Kronos pianos are in the Nautilus, but the sample sets (EXs files) are not. They will be an option in the future. I’m sure this was done to save usage of the limited amount of supported RAM , the biggest limitation of this architecture.

    • @ludovicBerquin
      @ludovicBerquin 3 роки тому

      @@xp50player I don't know how the nautilus will deal with memory. But the kronos use streaming to load a huge amout ouf 35 gigabytes of samples in one shot. This is achieved in my kronos with only 2 gig of free sample RAM. From what I read the nautilus has the same sample streaming technology. Also, audio track are streamed straight away from the hard drive. This capabilities are unique to the kronos and now the nautilus.

    • @ludovicBerquin
      @ludovicBerquin 3 роки тому

      @@WoodyPianoShack yes, correct, those are paid and sometimes offered EXs sample libraries. Depending on the kronos version you buy, korg created new sample libraries with specific piano preloaded and then made available for other kronos user (even kronos 1 user from early 2010 can still load them) of course you need to buy them. They made the limited Edition Red kronos SE, with the italian grand,...

    I kind of get the impression that the Nautilus Grand is intended to have really good mono-compatibility. Definitely not my favorite in stereo, but it will probably be nice in a live band in mono. It seems the close-mic is in mono or very narrow.

    • @burningbusch
      @burningbusch 3 роки тому +1

      Yes, when you look at the multi-samples in the Voice Name List they do not show as you would expect for a stereo sample with both -L and -R samples. So my impression is the main German2 (Nautilus) is mono with the FAR samples providing stereo when added in to the mix.

    Excellent walk-through, thanks! (Also nice playing!) Two questions: 1) does it have poorly-maintained pianos, possibly including honky-tonk? 2) I heard there was a special titanium edition with one extra grand, I thought it was the Faz but if the standard has the Faz, then the Titanium has I guess a Bosendorfer? Is there a way to load that into the regular model?

    • @WoodyPianoShack
      @WoodyPianoShack  3 роки тому +1

      thank you, there's a honky tonk in there but nothing to write home about, no "living room" style pianos that are typically slightly out of tune, there is an upright that I probably demonstrated here. I showed all the pianos that are currently available, the titanium I have not seen in the voice list and no way to download and load that i am aware of.

    About the String ressonance / Sympathetic ressonance. When you Press a key on a real piano and hold it down / use the damper pedal you lift the filt from the string so it can ressonance. So you press eg a C0 and C1 with left hand, hold it down and now play a melody line with the right hand. these 2 bass strings will now ressonance together with the ones you play with the right hand and vice versa, and will keep ressonancing even the sound has died out. Thats what the graphics is showing in the didplay. it shows wich strings are triggered indirectly from the strings you play.
    About the Half Damper pedal, you need a special damper pedal that is made with a potmeter instead of a switch to trigger half damper mode. If its switched on it will work if you use a half damper pedal. The instrument will auto detect wether you use one or the other.
    Try play a really short two handed chord and hit the damper pedal just after you release the key. it will trigger the ressonance just like a real Piano as all the strings should now pick up the ressonance from the sound board and you should also see the graphics for the ressonance. This is how it works on the Kronos so it should be the same with the Nautilus.

      thanks for the explanation! the thing that puzzled me here is that the graphic only showed resonating notes when I was *not* pressing the damper pedal! i do have a continuous damper pedal btw

    The Korg does sound nice (as far as it can over YT) but $4,500 for another synth? The key bed seems not as good as the Fatar TP/40WOOD and anyway it's probably a nightmare for B3 organ grinders and percussion work or Wurli birds.
    I still hold to Pianoteq and the SL88 Grand combination as state of the art. A length and a half to XLN Addictive Keys for second place.

    hi woody, i would love a video showing the combination mode. In my opinion the pianos that you showed in this video I honestly did not like, they sound very high-pitched and annoy the ear, I am listening through headphones and they sound horrible.
