While U.S. ban Chinese ev. Chinese EV is advancing in hyperspeed
Even if Toyota uses BYD hybrid engines, it still faces at least 3 big obstacles. 1. Interior not as tech savvy as Chinese EVs, 2. Production cost not as low as China's, 3. Slower model change cycles than China's. We are still not talking about autonomous driving technology of which China is sure more advance than Japan's.
Rapid model replacement cycles mean cars become obsolete quickly. Consumers do not like it at all. The reason for changing models so quickly is because of intense competition in the automotive industry.

@@microbiologycory10You must think the people running BYD are morons. Build a factory in USA😂😂😂😂😂
Toyota Hybrid is different architecture than BYD. Toyota Hybrid is based on ICE. BYD is an electric hybrid, electric engine. It is more efficient than ICE hybrid
A hybrid is both electric and ICE, that's what hybrid means. You can't have a hybrid that doesn't have an ICE engine. It has to have BOTH - an ICE engine AND an electric motor or it isn't a hybrid.
@@luongtam9087 purely semantics as it
depends 100% on application…a PHEV with 50 mi. EV range could be less efficient than a HEV if it’s never plugged in and always drives extremely long distances. Even the dodge Ramcharger is a HEV even though it cannot be run purely off gas…it needs gas for the generator to recharge its battery to run the EV motor. More efficient gas motors are needed for future HEV/PHEVs…especially if Trump wins in Nov as all EV incentives and infrastructure will cease for 4 years in the U.S.
@apterachallenge -- You don't understand. A Toyota hybrid has a big engine and small battery. BYD plug-in hybrid has small engine and a big battery, which will make it more efficient and more fun to drive.
@@trungson6604 Sure, and your explanation makes perfect sense. That other guy said something that was confusing and inaccurate. I've always said that if I designed a hybrid it would have a small engine and a big battery. If BYD has actually done that, then good on them.

If a company does not own the technology, then the other reason to choose their products will be build quality. I think for cars this is an important factor. The Chinese cars used to be known for subpar quality at lower prices. But with more automation this seems to be changing pretty quickly. Meanwhile, more and more dodgy practices from Japanese brands are being exposed and the attitude of the Japanese makers are quite concerning.
Personally I am extra worried about 2 things. First the fake safety tests. The airbags were set to pop by timer instead of sensors during collision tests. As a result there's quite a few photos and videos with completely smashed cars and zero airbags deployed and multiple fatalities. Secondly cutting corners in materials. The same model say Camry with thinner and thinner steel pipes over the years as firewall "safety bar" that stands between me and the engine. The Japanese cars are so often mocked as "energy absorption boxes" in China and you can find photos of accidents with a Chinese car sandwiched between 2 Japanese cars with smashed front and rear while you can hardly see a scratch on the Chinese car.
It used to be said you have to choose between fuel economy and safety. Looks like that age is now over.
In Malaysia , Japanese Cars are the Main STAY for ICE. However their Fuel Consumption is BLANTLY FALSE. Lucky if you can get 60% of their Claimed Fuel Consumption.
Have u ever heard the idea of crumple zones? It is better to absorb the crash impact than transferring it into the occupants inside.
BYD is not much better than those Japanese company BTW. BYD was caught using carcinogen in their EV Bus in Japan
Toyota's tests was more strict than the Japanese government since they export to most countries. Or more accurately, Japanese governments tests were so outdated, Toyota ignored them. Which is why they're in trouble.

If you waste 20 years on hydrogen powered cars and put no effort into pure EVs you find yourself forced to buy in with someone else's technology, or start from scratch. The problem with starting from scratch is that the market will not wait for you.
Toyota hybrids give them plenty of time to develop new cars - there is a waiting list
Toyota is likely stalling the market by promoting hybrids until they get to their "next big thing" that never comes.
THIS…the list. If
BYD can get rid of the wait I’ll love them for it. What’s the point of a PHEV with only 10kwh battery…when the RAV4/Prius Prime already have an 18 kWh? Why go backward? I think this might be bad info…energy density is going up so range can go…down?

I've driven Toyota hybrids for 13 years and all of my cars have been awesome. Not a single drop of oil needed to top up. The only parts bought are one set of front brake pads and a windscreen wiper! And I've driven about 260,000 miles.
@@leswhitehouse not a single drop of oil needed? What even is that? You’ve somehow gone past a lie into something even crazier.

Actually, they said they had a little over 100,000 engineers in R&D earlier this year and just added a few thosand more recent graduates.
didn't know it was that many! Also the work ethic in China is insane: 9am-9pm, 6 days a week. The 996 system. Which is what the Japanese used to be, maybe the Koreans still are, but Korea just can't match China's massive numbers of engineering graduates.
Yes, NiMH batteries are heavy, and they're old tech compared to LiIon. But they have some good points too. First is lifespan. They do not degrade by the calendar. 25 year old NiMH batteries are still working today. Second they are non-combustible. Third: No Cobalt. And that's about it. Each cell is only 1.2V. So very low energy density and the chemistry is slow compared to Lithium, so no regen braking.
They were the best batteries Toyota could use when they first released the Prius. But it restricted Toyota to a very small traction battery.
Is this all true? I’ve had Camry, RAV4 and Highlander hybrids and all have had regen since 2007…did they move to lipo them?

A non-plugin hybrid batter needs only a 2 mile range, and NMH makes sense for cost. A PHEV battery needs a 40 mile range, so Li is needed for weight.
Well, as someone who have driven both BYD and Toyota plug in hybrid, it not as simple as one is better than another.
BYD hybrid pros: super quiet, dead silent as EV and smooth running, better power and implementation, some BYD hybrid have 700hp and you find it in every BYD vehicles like off roader and heavy duty trucks
BYD cons:issue of stalling on highway never fully resolved, has a clutch that needs replacement
Toyota hybrid pros: reliable as rock, no wear item, only fluid change and out last the car, has no known issues of any kind
Toyota hybrid cons: loud and not very smooth, feels unrefined, a lot less powerful than BYD and not as widely implemented as BYD
Both are good on gas
What I really do like about Nickel Hydride battery is it DOESN'T have memory effect like Nickel Cadium or even Lithium Ion. However for EVs, that'll be a massive weight penalty.
Any Hybrid is a compromise between full EV and full Fossil fuel. I had a 2013 Leaf, both the best and worst car ever. Performance was amazing, but the battery was tiny and reducing... it was old Nissan technology. So my solution was the Corolla Hybrid. It's the BEST car I have ever had. It does have amazing technology, it goes twice the distance of a fossil fuel only car, that is a step in the right direction. It has never let me down, I get 800 to 1000 ks on 46 litres if I drive in eco mode. I will trade it in on a Model 3, just waiting for the cost curves to bring the model 3 prices below $30,000. EV advocates keep on dissmissing the usefulness of hybrids. They are a useful in between vehicle. Owning a hybrid really makes you wish you just bought a full EV. Just don't get a 2013 leaf, like I did.
Good quality + Good price = Good news. I don't really care who makes what 🙂.
*It's VERY smart move! It buys them time to attempt to leap frog BYD & if they can't, they have a base to sell into!*
Toyota and BYD announced their partnership back in 2019 and formed Toyota BYD Electric Vehicle Technology CO LTD.... They are using BYD stuff in China, no word on anywhere else yet. Is not really a play for tech or engineers or admitting their better when they were already one and the same, it's about access to Chinese vehicle market and rare earths/batteries. Is same reason lots of auto makers are teaming up with Chinese companies. If Australia processed or own minerals they might of been teaming up with Holden.
I knew it! Barely any of the mainstream media actually stated that Toyota will be using BYD tech in their next Gen corolla despite the stats/numbers being exactly the same as dm-i!
While Chinese consumers can distinguish these terms: HEV, PHEV, series hybrid powertrain, parallel powertrain, series-parallel powertrain, it seems that most westerners only know parallel non-pluggable HEV like Toyota's and thinks that all hybrids are the same.
It's a pity that PHEVs in your country are trash. Well, maybe Nissan and Honda is doing better than Toyota because at least they have some technology of series powertrain.
BYD make everything themselves, right down to the wiper blades. There are no after-market parts available for BYD’s (and Chinese cars in general). So if we have a trade squabble with China or things get a bit nasty in the South China Sea and Taiwan, your Chinese car will be sitting disabled in the street. Our niece had to wait 11 weeks for a PDM (power distribution module) for her ATTO 3.

So, nothing wrong with that, as you like Zeeker and BYD. 🤔
There are enough people in the world that go for the brand rather than the knowledge on buying decisions to keep these companies very profitable!

Toyota is overhauling their hybrids for 2027-ish. Toyota hybrid's since the 1st gen Prius are the same conservative design that has been tweaked for cost savings and reliability - but the same basic system.
Nickel metal hydride has been good enough - and less costly. Hybrids don't need large batteries - although PHEV do, I don't think plug-in hybrids make sense. A Prius battery is suitcase sized - light enough for one person to swap is an hour.
A gasoline car like a Yaris is less costly to own long-term than any Toyota hybrid or EV.
When you can DIY hybrid repairs the Toyoya hybrids can exceed 500,000 miles at very low costs - if looking for a Methuselah car. Lots of forums for Toyota hybrids
A strength and weakness of hybrids is that they are efficient as city cars - not so much for distance traveling. Toyota is attempting to build new hybrids that are very frugal on long trips - can they succeed? This hinges on a super-efficient gasoline engine - which is mostly theory at present .
If BYD can build cars for less, then Toyota will build in lost cost nations, but many of those societies lack skilled workers.
Nickle Metal Hydride don't burn like lithium batteries do. It's a mature tech. Also. N- MH is better in the cold weather. And hybrids don't requir huge batteries, so weight isn't as much of a problem.

In the US, we can’t buy a BYD. Not yet anyway. We can buy a Toyota. So there’s that. (I would never buy non-fully electric nor Toyota anymore, I’m just making the point.) Very quickly, Toyota should do the same thing for their fully electric models (what few they have) - buy the skateboard from BYD. If they don’t, then it’s a blatant tell that their real strategy is to prolong ICE and fossil fuels!
Sony is more than happy to sell their photographic sensors to Nikon and others. BYD will profit from their relationship with Toyota and build a level of name recognition they probably wouldn't be able to achieve in the US, since the government is intent on taxing BYD to the hilt. As long as the tech doesn't hurt Toyota's reliability and low-maintenance record, it's a win-win for both companies. It takes a smart company to admit that someone else does it better and change course. It might just be that by, say, 2040 the US will have the grid to support EVs, and I'd have no problems buying a hybrid with Toyota reliability and that kind of efficiency. As for EVs, I'd also wait until battery tech doesn't have all the negatives related to temperature, the extraction/refinement environmental costs and the geopolitical issues; I think there's lots of potential for battery tech evolution and am willing to wait it out rather than invest in something that's so far from ideal.dddddd
