Reslosound: Installing A New Ribbon

  • This Reslosound Ribbon Microphone (RBH/TS) is an icon of the 60s, prominently used at The Cavern Club in Liverpool and becoming commonly referred to as 'The Beatles Microphone' as a result.
    This particular microphone is needing a new ribbon, as the old one is starting to buzz against the motor housing.
    Re-ribboning a microphone requires a steady hand and a lot of patience. It's tricky work, but the results speak for themselves.

    Meanwhile, some manufacturer just looked at this, saw the Bionicle gear jig, then looked at their expensive machine tha does the same job, and faepalmed

      Jordan Payne lmfao I actually use this method with 2 gears years ago on a home made Ribbon Mic lol. I noticed the shape of the foil was based on equal distsnces so I looked at a "How it's made Ribbon Mics" and it shows the machine lmfao.

    Wow. You know, I actually like the Reslo by itself the best among the guitar tones. The 609, I found, had an unpleasant, almost "boxy" treble end; the Reslo was a LOT smoother and more natural sounding.
    BTW, myself personally? I come from a filmmaking background and am more familiar with the sound of mics recording voice, like in your voiceover here, so I actually appreciate that you used it for your voiceover; it gave me a better idea of the sound of the mic overall.
    VERY impressive for a mic that's somewhere in the vicinity of 50 years old. Impressive for a mic PERIOD, actually. They just don't make stuff that solid and long lasting today. ;)

    One of my biggest issues with your distorted guitar recordings has always been that they have sounded thin to me. I dare say this ribbon mic definitely added much needed warmth and depth to the sound, and the ribbon mic's warmth with the treble-heavy 609 actually sounded damn good. Just offering my perspective. Cheers from Texas!

      +The_BlueJay I preferred the reslo on it's own, and I'm using old cheap in-ear phones that I know make everything else way too muddy, but the mixed sound was too tinny for my liking, and the 609 on its own was just horrific. It sounded like wasp in an empty beer can. I've always found metal guitar sounds too thin and weak. I really think metal guitarists have lost the high end from their hearing. Crank the damn mids, God damn it! Not sure how it all sounded through decent headphones, but right now I think the reslo on its own gave a perfect metal sound

    I much preferred the 609 over the Reslo for cleans, but the Reslo schooled the 609 on overdrive, very interesting.

    I didn't expect this to be such a cool video. I do think that you got the best sound when blending the mics. You got the high end from the ribbon and the mids and bottom from the sennheiser. Didn't like any of them alone, but blended they were lovely.

    Back in 58 to 63 I used to remove the thick felt filters just leaving the covers filtered. Then fit a new ribbon available then. The stock Tx was OK. Mic was a lot more responsive then with good presence.

  • @IvoTrausch
    @IvoTrausch 4 роки тому

    I wonder if the sound would change if you experiment with the thickness of the ribbon, or the material, eg. gold, silver or copper leaf.

    • @in.der.welt.sein.
      @in.der.welt.sein. Рік тому

      Yes, I believe the thicker the foil, the less treble it will pick up due to the mass of the foil.

    Excellent... i just found one of these in my folks attic... 2 questions - What is the XLR adapter you're using? and are you using a preamp? I head these old Reslo's have a low impedance and need a preamp to bring them up to modern levels?? Relative noob so thanks for the help!

    • @Andystuff800
      @Andystuff800 2 роки тому

      To record a microphone you need a preamp. Assuming you want to record on a PC, look at the UMC202HD.

  • @guitar19971
    @guitar19971 8 років тому

    Pretty damn cool however I would have thought that if breathing into it to harshly could damage the ribbon mic, then a guitar cab would have made mincemeat of it. On another note what happened to that new bloodbound you were building? The pictures on facebook were looking amazing.

      @tiqueholl8899 7 років тому

      2.5 microns is the durable ribbon density but the more responsive weight it 1.8 microns...just much harder to mount and less forgiving to SPLs etc. I think most of the old ribbons were lighter, these days people want durability over frequency response...but any ribbon, well almost, is preferable in my book...

  • @colintraveller
    @colintraveller 8 років тому

    What if you were to increase the width of the aluminium strip and density of it, By folding the it over a few times ??

    • @ScienceofLoud
      @ScienceofLoud  8 років тому +5

      You want as little mass on the ribbon as possible. Increasing the mass in any way adds to the inertia of the ribbon, reducing its effectiveness as a microphone.
      In short, it would be a really bad idea.
