This is a legendary video. “Be More Dog”. I haven’t even got a dog but I understand the message and it applies to the whole of life. So positive. Thank you Mark
The last time I ran a 50k trail/mountain run I didn't even take a watch.... Didn't hardly look at any electronic device. It was exililarting. Yes. BE MORE DOG.
I tore my ACL and I have problems with my Achilles. Due to this, I dropped *all* racing plans, I dropped all hard workouts, I dropped very long runs. I just get out every morning to have 45-60 minutes easy run. Funny thing, I feel better than ever and the runs are more enjoyable than ever. Nothing to prove. No goals to fail. No disappointments. No pain.
Things you might have overlooked: the unbelievable scenery, the exhilarating fresh, cold air, and the fact that you and the wife were spending time together.
100% agree, I suppose that is the gap between what is good for me and what is good for UA-cam content. I often have incredible experiences but they don't necessarily translate to content.
@@MarkLewisfitness I like the content! Running thru a muddy and snowy trail with some views on the landscape - I like to watch that also. It motivates me to run thru this struggles too!
@@MarkLewisfitness that's the beauty of not having so many subscribers I guess - that you are free to make any videos you want and not be so obsessed with pleasing viewers with the content.
I was motivated to comment much the same thing. I'm an early subscriber to Mark's channel and always enjoy the humor, well written videos and movie snippets from Top Gun, Rocky, etc. This proves however that sometimes you don't need the bling. A simple story (again well written) will suffice.
Unironically one of the best running videos I’ve ever watched on UA-cam. Sometimes us runners do need to be reminded of the joy and the gift of running itself, beyond any other goals we might have.
I've watched hours and hours of ultra marathon documentaries and training videos, and this was the most valuable 3 minutes and 26 seconds of inspiration of it all. Brilliantly done. This is why I run. Thank you.
Possibly one of your best inspirational videos to date Mark. This morning I got on the treadmill, sore calves and not feeling it. My friend got on the one next to me as she is week 1 of Couch to 5k. So, I ran and walked with her and loved it. Once I threw out my training plan this morning I learned to simply enjoy the moment.
I run with a club, on Monday I ran with a different group at a much reduced pace and really enjoyed just running at conversation pace and chatting to the others on the run. It’s not always about the numbers. Great video.
I do almost all my runs with my dog. When I run without him, I do miss his drive and innate sense of joy. He really keeps me going! Dogs are incredible athletes, thanks for the inspiring video!!
Finding THIS through all your disappointment and sharing that level of deep realization with me and everyone who needs to hear this, is why I love your channel, Mark!
Agree 100% I ditched Instagram Deleted the Facebook app off my phone. Still have Strava and love watching you tube for videos like this one. Find that Strava is awesome because I can see other people out there running and riding. It also tracks every run, ride, gym, swim that I do and so that others can see me out there doing something as well. I'm not the fastest or the fittest. I am better than I was at swimming 3 months ago.
I’ve been following you for a couple years now. This is your best video yet! Thank you Nixon for reminding us about what is important - The pure joy of just getting out and moving - you are wise beyond your dog years.
In my opinion this is one of Marks best videos, brilliantly narrated, simple but very true !

Beautiful. I run with my doggie and she just loves it. As soon as she sees me in running apparel, she goes crazy and starts jumping and barking out of pure joy and excitement because she knows it's running time, she knows it's fun time. Thank you for the beautiful message and the beautiful images.
Fantastic story, I exercise for fun, my goal everyday is to get up and do something. 2 years ago I was 4 stone heavier and am extremely proud of what I have achieved but the biggest issue everyday is still to get up and do something I’ll enjoy.
On my long runs the last couple of weeks I keep thinking about this video, and find myself feeling calmer about when I need to slow down or calmer about my pace in general. I had to come back and say thank you for the reminder that sometimes things can be just purely about joy.
I am a heart transplant recipient of 13 months I can't run I am like nixon. I walk and cycle. Admire you. And found this video very inspirational. Respect to you . Thank you
Was in bed this morning procrastinating about going for a run- watched this clip about being more like Nixon. Dragged my big ol carcass out of bed and ran, not worrying about time, pace or any of that. Was a great run. Thanks Nixon!!👍🐶

Jen ran in Cascadias !!! Her first go in them. Back on track - animals could teach us a lot about personal best. Whether chasing down prey in the wild or jogging over mountains with their owners, animals, simply give it their all in the moment. It never occurs to them if that was their best performance - why would it matter? Why should it matter?
@@MarkLewisfitness I suspect the main difference, is that animals occupy the present moment, no future, no past! We as a species, on the other hand, tend to be pre-occupied with future and the past. I agree. Be more dog indeed. Running is natural for us humans. Nixon is a rockstar❤ we definitely can learn a lot from the simplicity of the creatures around us that we tend to forget easily 🙏Thanks for another nice video Mark 👍
Sometimes the video thrown together in a moment of inspiration with little forethought is the best work you’ve ever done. Like a game of pool after a pint. ❤
This is my favorite video you've ever made. Thank you. When I lack motivation, or I'm beating myself up for not hitting my fitness goals this is going to become a go to video.
I've been following your channel from a distance, literally, here in Norway, and I have to say, Mark, this was the video that has made the most impact on me. Truly a beautiful message transferable to life itself. Having said that, your videos are always inspiring, thorough and funny!
This... strangly touched me on a deeper level. I have a (very short and totally random) list called "Resonating sources" and now this video kindly stays there with a core message note - Be more dog. Love it.
Love the message! I just started running this year, and got inspired by colleagues to sign up for my first trail run next year (11k, 500 m in altitude). The fact that I love lost about this race: Dogs allowed. This shows it’s aimed to have fun and ENJOY company, scenery and movement. 😀
This was inspirational and moving. As a runner training for my first marathon with so many other races on the books, it's easy to forget how much I love and appreciate the simple joy of running. Also, applies to so much more than running. Living in the moment without expectations is so important
Yep - Life should be an accumulation of experiences. And when you look at the most important ones that matter to you, it is rare that they came about following clear and defined expectations. More often, they come from simply being in a good place with good people, and then good things happening.
I love this 🥹 my dogs, as well, have taught me so much. It is so simple to make them happy, I've learned that the simple things are all I need to be my happiest self also. I love them so deeply ❤️
Thank you Mark. I’m not fast, never will be. Sometimes that really gets me down. You have reminded me when I just run, it just feels good. That’s why I run. ❤
I'm new in your community and I'm kinda new in to running. This video not only helped me be motivatied, it reminded me on my past. So even though I really like the geeky part of running. Just after your video I thought, yeah, running! Running in itself makes the difference. Today, I ran, and despite the short distance I had fun. Because of the time spend with my family, because of the good feeling afterwards, because I ran. Thanks for giving me back that feeling which I haven't felt in nearly two decades. Thanks for reminding me!
This hit me at the right time. My husband and best friend are ultra marathoners and I have struggled to find joy in running like they do. I've gotten so caught up in all the UA-cam videos about pace, form, zone training trying to "fix" me. While all of that is important, I'm beginning to realize that I've got to just get out there and run and stop focusing on all the stats. Thanks Mark for the encouragement!
I know this video is not new but I keep coming back to it, because I love it so much (and a really love dogs). I don't get sad when a run is "bad" because "be more dog" is the way to go.
Dogs know the important things of a walk or run, how many pees, how many sniffs and being with the humans that they are really attached to. The three of you finished a chilly run through some great country, I would say that makes your team, winners and ready for the next time out. I am impressed how well the dog stuck to running and not being too distracted with a day in the country.
Great point Mark! Indeed, the dog, or Life itself doesn't need externals to justify itself. The Essence of just Being is more then enough...maybe it's all there is. Love your way of presenting; especially your humor and quirkiness...thanks!
I LOVED this video. That's why I sold my Fenix, got rid of all the sensors on the bike and only have an Apple Watch with the stock fitness app, just for measuring distance and route. Countless times I got mad about my HR not locking up, slow pace, bugs, etc. I wasted my time comparing apps, Garmin vs Apple, testing accuracy, and for what? One time I was mad that my son was messing up my average speed by constantly stoping on his bike to scratch his back... During this ride I asked myself "what the hell am I doing?!". Now I just start a workout on my AW, don't care about GPS lock and other things and I just ride MTB, walk, run or play with my kids. I am satisfied and every time I come back with a big smile :) Wish You the same Mark
The bit about your kid sums it up 100% - In 20 years you'll remember bike riding with him when he was young, you won't remember what time you got or pace you set!
Wow. That might be one of the best videos you’ve ever put up. Very powerful and very thought provoking. For someone who is struggling with her running this spoke to me. I need to be more Nixon. Go Nixon.
Absolutely sums up why I run, times , pb's ect are just the icing on the cake I run because I usually feel great doing it and on the odd occasion I don't I always feel better after than before.Thanks.
I enjoy every single one of your videos, some a little more than others. This one is one of your (and Nixon's) best. As always, thanks for being a positive influence in the world. It =is= noticed.
I love this video. It is so true. I love running with dogs. The enjoyment they get just from The pure enjoyment of it. Mark you are good, you are very very good. Thank you for your stories
Loved this. I run with my two dogs. I've come to realize that they don't care about anything but getting out for a run. They run in the moment, not worrying about yesterday, not concerned about tomorrow.
Run to love running, not for a far away objective. Long term objectives are fun, but they shouldn't be more important than appreciating every single run. I rediscovered biking last year. Had so much fun just feeling the air.
This is just what I needed and a reminder we all probably need from time to time. It's great to always strive to improve, but sometimes it is also best to appreciate the wonderful things around us, and the fact that we ARE ABLE TO get up and run each day. What a gift! Thank you for this!
Great video Mark. Really well put. I've been coming around this this way of thinking recently. My ego is a powerful thing, and once cycling became more about doing a gnarly ride to get kudos, to impress, rather than simply enjoying being out and moving, I realised I had to make a change.
Training all winter for my first big event of my first planned full year of running and I suffered a painful foot injury. Almost healed up now but I'm way behind in training. This video perked me up for the first time in many weeks. Thank you. And thank you, Nixon!
Poetry! I've been following you for a couple of months now and you are an inspiration. What drew me to your channel at first was your height. I am 195cm which is unconventional for a runner and I was happy to find someone I can relate to. I love how you are treating your dogs, I am still hesitant to take my golden retriever out for a run. Thank you for the motivation! :)
Mark, I had reason to look back on and share this video with a friend today, and I realized....this goes way beyond running and can apply to a huge swath of our lives.
What a brilliant message. A few years ago I stopped tracking my running metrics because I found that it stripped all of my joy from the activity. So glad that watching Nixon helped put things back into perspective for you. The wisdom of dogs, right? More of this content please.
I think this is your best video yet! When I embraced that I am a very slow runner I started enjoying it: going out, exercising, enjoying nature, occasionally struggling and embracing the voyage, both literally and figuratively. This video is a very good example of that feeling 😊
Truly brilliant message Mark, really poignant. I bet this resonates with a lot of us, especially those who started years ago with the idea that we "needed" to be competitive...but now just run for the joy of it. I'm only registered for two events this year, and my goal is to finish them and have a good time doing so. I don't care where I place, just doing it is enough. Thanks for putting this video up, I think it's important to remind those of us who get a little obsessive about the details and forget the big picture. :)
Thank you for this video, very inspiring story I needed to hear, for most of who love running or training we don't need metrics, just go out there and enjoy yourself.
Probably my favorite video of yours so far. I was smiling like an idiot for the entire time once you started talking about just the pure joy of running like a dog. Awesome stuff.

Yes! All dogs know is "Am I happy right now" - and seem to do pretty well on it!
100% agree with this message Mark - thanks for the reminder!
Brilliant, very profound👏 This is how I feel most of the time when running. Now I will strive to be more like Nicson
What a brilliant message. A few years ago I stopped tracking my running metrics because I found that it stripped all of my joy from the activity. So glad that watching Nixon helped put things back into perspective for you. The wisdom of dogs, right? More of this content please.
Best video I have seen in awhile! Incredible backstory with some honest insight and beautiful scenery! Thanks for posting!
Best video/Story on your channel so far. Thanks for the motivation.
Thank you for this video, very inspiring story I needed to hear, for most of who love running or training we don't need metrics, just go out there and enjoy yourself.
One of your best videos yet! Simple. Informative. Great narration. Inspirational. You should do more like these.
Awesome change of pace and perspective, love Nixon's take!
Probably my favorite video of yours so far. I was smiling like an idiot for the entire time once you started talking about just the pure joy of running like a dog. Awesome stuff.
Such a beautiful short wake-up call video. At the end I even teared up a bit. Thank you for this story, thank you Nixon.
I've watched most of your videos and had a few "coffee over keyboard" moments from some of your humour, but that was brilliant and beautifully done !
