I imagine the nullifying of the stat requirements for inversion coasters was done to also prevent short launched or boomerang coasters like the Shuttle Loop from getting a penalty. Still pretty amusing to see that loophole exploited with the Tiny Corkscrew, though.
BS, you can go straight down from max into an unbanked small turn and not have those stats, you also would have small nausea, I guess riders die before inversions?
@@jefffinkbonner9551 That's actually not particularly difficult as they're still coasters and thus still good rides. The stats of your rides are far less important in scenario play than my videos may make you think, especially when it's pay-for-entry in with a goal that doesn't involve park value.
"According to the game, a chairlift with only 1 station is so boring that it is IMPOSSIBLE to derive any joy from riding it" I don't know why that was so funny to me but man I had a good laugh! Makes me wonder if there was a specific reason or incident that inspired that bit of code.....
It's crazy to think how such an old game was incredibly complex without telling you literally any of this. Makes me wonder what the devs were thinking.
Ah yes, I can confirm that you get really nauseous if you just walk around on a minigolf track, but if I there is a minigolf hole it is only half as nauseous.
What you do is have a mini golf as the only entry and a few bathrooms, exit is into the park, big entry fee and now you don’t have to worry about the annoying customers!
One of my least favorite things about this game is that these requirements are hidden. Kid me never would have even imagined something like this was going on behind the scenes.
Cus you were dumb... Can build anything you want anyway, just start with thrill rides and charge the right amount, $20 for umbrellas, you’ve hacked the game.
A chairlift having some nausea rating definitely makes sense if you have a fear of heights. I remember as a kid when I rode a theme park chairlift in real life, I wasn't bored, just scared out of my wits and wanted to get off. Especially when it was going over the pond.
So I just recently started playing RCT2 -- I've played the ever living heck out of RCT: Deluxe as that was what I grew up with. Have to say, although the two games look so similar on the surface, RCT2 really does add some neat improvements I wasn't even aware I wanted. Both games are amazing but with the added features of RCT2 and the fact that open RCT2 is built to mod RCT2, that second one does seem to be a no brainer. Anyway, working through RCT2's scenarios now and this channel is going to be extremely handy.
Rollercoaster Tycoon Wakcy World’s expansion! I still have it in it’s big ass box actually, definitely a collector item as rct1 expansions were bundled even before rct2 bundled up rct1 expansions.
Didn't played much RCT (because my ride always sucked and I bankrupted in no time...), but your comprehensive tear down of these game mechanics is very interesting from a programing and game design point of view. We don't make games this way nowadays....
Ur 100% correct games aren't made like this anymore it's fricken pathetically sad to see that many and more and more games are just made to get quick cash or to include a lot of pay to win or pay to get skins ect... and just crap games overall... also got games now where it doesn't feel fully made then they either leave it as is (not a good polished game) OR worse sell the stuff that should've been in the game in the first place as DLC's... it's ridiculous... but yes these RCT games are mind blowingly detailed and provide HOURS of fun. Another newer game I love to play also made by one dev is stardew valley which was well done imo. Sometimes it's not the most expensive video games that are the real gems. Also tips if u wanted to try playing again (u can buy and play on steam btw): - there are pre built options for rides if u aren't good at making the rides this is also REALLY helpful cuz it takes time to build custom rides and some scenarios need park value and having new rides helps park value more so it's easier to just plop down a pre built ride demolishing later and rebuilding. It also makes u not feel as bad spending how much time to custom build a coaster to have to delete it later cuz of park value requirements.. - for bankruptcy (I've only run into this issue like once btw..) DONT rush! Take things in chunks as u have the $ and especially when u start maps/scenarios focus on ur overall parks wellbeing.. realistically u can't make multiple coasters right away this is where that patience comes in. Attract more guests by building the smaller and/or stationary rides (ex: merry go round, swinging ship, scrambled eggs) as well as making sure u have a drink/food/bathrooms. Small attractions and having ur stalls and right amount of workers is a great start while u build up to being able to build a roller coaster. When it comes to workers one mechanic to start is plenty u don't need more than one til u expand more and I like to have more handymans that don't mow grass, then my few mechanics, I hardly have entertainers unless it's mid to later game and for rides with long wait lines, then lastly I will do security guards but also not until mid-later game when I've gotten my park going good and money is doing good only then do I start considering entertainers and the security guards. Hope those tips help anyone else out too!!:)
This guy's knowledge of RTC2 is down right impressive. Way more than a beginner like me can take in, but I appreciate this depth, and may be back when I'm ready for it.
I haven't played RCT2 in probably a decade, but I love your videos regardless. Someday, when I get out of the MMO hole and my backlog, I'll definitely grab OpenRCT and play thanks to you.
I recently built the smallest figure 8 Go-Kart track you make, and still cross over your own track, with a bit of a fenced garden look to the scenery. I left it open, because I knew you didn't want to cover your go-karts from watching this video before, but it still got halved excitement. I spent a good hour or two in "RCT Classic" trying to figure out what was going on. Turns out that the small flat steel grid structure-piece I put UNDER the two hills that are in that design, counted as the Karts being "more than 50% covered" after ten laps, and that's why I got the tanked excitement. Removed those 4 pieces (again, from UNDERNEATH the track), and the whole ride went back to normal. It was a weird one. PS: This is a partial copy/paste from my comment in your video covering go karts specifically, because it's an important bit of information to know for people in that video as well.
That's correct! It has a fairly high drop height requirement of 15 meters, which makes it great for making a coaster that looks like it should hit all requirements.
I think the Mine Train Coaster has a requirement that it must have at least one underground section and one above ground section. Otherwise it gets a small penalty. It’s hard to prove though since underground segments always grant extra excitement.
The mine train is the worst coaster but I still build it over and over, don’t get why Sawyer didn’t program all pieces into the rides, it’s not like he was big on controlling the game.
Random tangent that's led me to want ride overviews for some coasters: I ran a BUNCH of tests with the looping coaster design at the start and found it actually produces semi-decent stats for 3 coaster types. While you've already done the Corkscrew (E 4.92, I 4.54, N 1.84, throughput of 1600 guests/hour, $11.40 ticket first 5 months if only one in park), these are the other two that **worked** and would be helpful to explain why it works for them: Water Coaster: E 4.78, I 5.73, N 3.84, throughput of 2200 guests/hour @ station maximum of 5 cars, $12.60 ticket for first 5 months if only one in park. Hyper Twister: E 6.23, I 4.09, N 1.96, throughput of 2000 guests/hour, $13.80 ticket for first 5 months if only one in park. Again, same design as the looping with poor stats, but these three had REALLY good stats, and you haven't done the Water Coaster or Hyper Twister yet.
12:50 Is it really true that sceneries can act as "shelter" and make the ride being considered as covered/indoor ride? It seems not the case for me in the game........
@@Trancefreak12 but you can design good rides without adhering to these arbitrary, unintuitive, and limiting rules. The game just penalizes you for it.
really appreciate this vid! had a coaster just today that should have had quite good stats that stunk and immediately knew to check the requirements - it was about 10m shy of the minimum lol
In RCT2 (vanilla no mods) I've built multiple go-kart tracks with over 75% underground, and didn't seem to run into any stat penalties... Edit: Well now I had to go look to be sure, and the racetracks of mine in question do actually pop out of the sides of hills and mountains enough that they might actually be only 75% covered. I thought it made the tracks more interesting... turns out I was more right than I suspected!
As a person that plays simcoaster (Theme Park Inc) I have no idea why I watch these but I love them nonetheless. I was wondering how nausea works in this game though; in simcoaster it's affected by the number of plants in any given area so you can have the most extreme park with food stands right next to the rides but still have zero sick guests if you have enough plants.
In this game there are two main ways to deal with nausea - benches, as guests sitting on them will recover, and guests with high nausea will sit on them, and first aid buildings, which also cause sick guests to recover but have an upkeep.
Super useful video. Also I really feel like the car ride needs to be rebalanced, I've been trying to build with it recently and I don't think I've gotten a good design out of it a single time. half the time I end up with stats lower than a crooked house and I can only charge like $0.10 for it. this is after getting the various excitement bonuses. it's weird cuz I remember in the original games it was actually a pretty decent ride but in open rct2 the thing seems impossible to build with unless you make it absolutely massive. To me that's not really the point of a ride that otherwise is pretty compact. I feel like it should get special code that gives it different bonuses based on what decorations you have placed around it, since IRL thats the point of a Car Ride anyways
I literally this morning watched the transport video and now this one has the single station chairlift with no track in it that I saw talked about in the comments. I don't remember seeing it in any other videos but maybe I missed it. It made me laugh so hard
What's the most spammable coaster if the inversions-nullify-stat-requirements were turned off..? Not sure if that was covered in the tiny corkscrew video.. or which video that was! linky please..? (edit: it's the junior coaster oval right?)
Oh, in difficult hill terrain I always tend to build go karts and river rapids almost completely underground, because it's easy building. Now I see the Sheltered penalty mechanic. Bedankt!
Quick question but context first: I once built a park on RCT1 designed to imprison people...free park entry, 1 ride with free admission...that's dumps you in the other half of the park where there are only bathrooms and other kiosks charging max or near max for everything... Is there anyway I can filter out guests as soon as they run out of money but not before? And is there any way I can entice more people to actually take the small ride? Often times people would about face and walk out of the park so I had to make like...3 rides to dump people into the extraction zone

I imagine the nullifying of the stat requirements for inversion coasters was done to also prevent short launched or boomerang coasters like the Shuttle Loop from getting a penalty.
Still pretty amusing to see that loophole exploited with the Tiny Corkscrew, though.
Oh God the most boring chairlift ever at 17:00 got me way harder than I care to admit. :D
The amount of times I've made a beautiful masterpiece and its like excitement 2, intensity 18, nausea 19.
BS, you can go straight down from max into an unbanked small turn and not have those stats, you also would have small nausea, I guess riders die before inversions?

All coaster types are unique and equally valuable in the eyes of Marcel Vos...except the Heartline coaster.
And the mini suspended coaster.
NEW CHALLENGE: complete a scenario wherein the only roller coasters you can build are the heartline and mini suspended coasters!
@@jefffinkbonner9551 That's actually not particularly difficult as they're still coasters and thus still good rides.
The stats of your rides are far less important in scenario play than my videos may make you think, especially when it's pay-for-entry in with a goal that doesn't involve park value.
@@MarcelVos the mini suspended coaster is not that bad. You just have the wrong mindset when you try to build one
"According to the game, a chairlift with only 1 station is so boring that it is IMPOSSIBLE to derive any joy from riding it"
I don't know why that was so funny to me but man I had a good laugh! Makes me wonder if there was a specific reason or incident that inspired that bit of code.....
It's crazy to think how such an old game was incredibly complex without telling you literally any of this. Makes me wonder what the devs were thinking.
Dev* one dude made this in Assembly lol
The nerd thought, “I’ve done it, my game is in my fav cereal box, now i’ll sell the rights to Atari and keep on nerding, what legacy?”
Ah yes, I can confirm that you get really nauseous if you just walk around on a minigolf track, but if I there is a minigolf hole it is only half as nauseous.
16:34 You've got that backwards, fam. A minigolf course _without_ holes is half as nausea-inducing as one that actually does have holes.
@@E-102_Gamma do the guests puke from just traveling the park normally then?
@@jackradzelovage6961 Nope, because there's no holes (;
Since 2002 I play this game, actually on my smartphone. Thanks for yourour videos.
That chairlift thing shows just how wacky this game is once one looks past the merry-go-rounds and hamburger stalls
Also tips if u wanted to try playing again (u can buy and play on steam btw):
- there are pre built options for rides if u aren't good at making the rides this is also REALLY helpful cuz it takes time to build custom rides and some scenarios need park value and having new rides helps park value more so it's easier to just plop down a pre built ride demolishing later and rebuilding.
I came across this channel recently and as a result am playing OpenRCT 2 again, alongside Classic on a tablet. Rolling back the years!!! Thanks.
Great vid. I like the addition of the bg music as well now!
A comment will be left by me to increase UA-cam's metric of engagement. You deserve it for such in-depth content, Marcel.

I haven't played RCT2 in probably a decade, but I love your videos regardless. Someday, when I get out of the MMO hole and my backlog, I'll definitely grab OpenRCT and play thanks to you.
Dude I can watch your videos over and over again
Niet dat ik verwacht iets nieuws te leren in deze video, ik gun je een extra view met 100% kijktijd. Groeten vanaf de Korreweg 👍🏻
Never been this early!! I love your videos Marcel! One of my favorite games to this day. 🎢
More than i ever needed to know about how much of my monorail i can have under cover. Not sure if it makes more sense now or less.
Absolutely fantastic and oddly entertaining video. Well done Marcel!
the vertical drop coaster at 1:20 I think gets its stats halved because it just barely doesn't hit the drop height requirement.
That's correct! It has a fairly high drop height requirement of 15 meters, which makes it great for making a coaster that looks like it should hit all requirements.
This game is amazing. Back then it was a pioneer and today devs can't even make a worthy copy.
I'm super early, and excited to be so! Thank you for your awesome vids!
This video meets my stat requirements.
You should make a video about the best and worst prebuilt coasters.
Random tangent that's led me to want ride overviews for some coasters:
I ran a BUNCH of tests with the looping coaster design at the start and found it actually produces semi-decent stats for 3 coaster types. While you've already done the Corkscrew (E 4.92, I 4.54, N 1.84, throughput of 1600 guests/hour, $11.40 ticket first 5 months if only one in park), these are the other two that **worked** and would be helpful to explain why it works for them:
Water Coaster: E 4.78, I 5.73, N 3.84, throughput of 2200 guests/hour @ station maximum of 5 cars, $12.60 ticket for first 5 months if only one in park.
I love this game and I love that you’re so wise about this game and chose to share it with us.

brilliant video, very well done Marcel !
Incidentally this is why the micro corkscrew doesn't work very well for the Stand-Up Coaster ;)
I loOoOove when you use Gentle Ride music in the background 🎶🎶
It’s so dreamy
I was wondering why it seemed familiar, thanks for pointing that out!
This is something I was wondering about, since the game keeps it secret and it's useful to know
Ah, now I know why the indoor go-kart arena I made when playing this game some two decades ago did so poorly!
There's a lot of information from previous videos, but like all other videos I learn something new and interesting.

3:21 and the Reverse Freefall's Coaster's Exitment is divided by zero.... I can't explain otherwise how my game crashed as I placed one.
This man could write his PhD on RCT
Thank goodness I now have a way to reduce the high nausea levels on my mini golf rides!
12:50 Is it really true that sceneries can act as "shelter" and make the ride being considered as covered/indoor ride? It seems not the case for me in the game........
OpenRCT2 developers, PLEASE embed stat requirements into the game's interface!
I think part of the challenge of the game is to design good rides without being spoon-fed the instructions.
@@Trancefreak12 Good for you. You can just leave the feature disabled if it gets implemented.
@@BerserkFervor Yeah I've no problem with including an option in the cheats menu.
@@Trancefreak12 but you can design good rides without adhering to these arbitrary, unintuitive, and limiting rules. The game just penalizes you for it.
@@Crazy_Diamond_75 The vast majority of them are perfectly intuitive if you've actually ridden any rollercoasters.
the idea that a mini golf course with no holes is suddenly half as nauseating as an equivalent course with at least one hole is very funny
really appreciate this vid! had a coaster just today that should have had quite good stats that stunk and immediately knew to check the requirements - it was about 10m shy of the minimum lol

"it's impossible to derive any joy from riding it"
Yeah sounds like my ex
In RCT2 (vanilla no mods) I've built multiple go-kart tracks with over 75% underground, and didn't seem to run into any stat penalties...
Edit: Well now I had to go look to be sure, and the racetracks of mine in question do actually pop out of the sides of hills and mountains enough that they might actually be only 75% covered. I thought it made the tracks more interesting... turns out I was more right than I suspected!
I didn’t expect to learn so much from this, like for the observation tower and the caveats for the go karts.
You are a smart man, Marcel. RCT was my first ever favorite PC game 22 years ago
this video was amazing, props, very elaborate
As a person that plays simcoaster (Theme Park Inc) I have no idea why I watch these but I love them nonetheless. I was wondering how nausea works in this game though; in simcoaster it's affected by the number of plants in any given area so you can have the most extreme park with food stands right next to the rides but still have zero sick guests if you have enough plants.
In this game there are two main ways to deal with nausea - benches, as guests sitting on them will recover, and guests with high nausea will sit on them, and first aid buildings, which also cause sick guests to recover but have an upkeep.
@@alexstewart9592 Interesting, thanks for the info!
These videos have made me addicted to my childhood again, thank you lol.

Hello Marcel Vos and welcome to another viewer.
Do you have a video about the coaster at 6:10 and the synchronisation of the trains on it?
